This museum is fantastic. I have maintained a membership for several years now. They rotate the temporary exhibits, and change and update permanent exhibits on a reasonably basis. They feature many different types of exhibits and from different time periods. They just added a childrens activity room that is extremely popular.
Dense with extremely rich and fascinating history. Its staggering the amount of exhibits that are on display, and how complete of a picture one walks away with after experiencing it all. I feel more connected to the people who lived through a lot of conflicted times in Tennessees history after visiting here. Leave yourself a couple hours to really get the most out of this very well designed museum.Only downside is that it needs a little maintenance. Some exhibit gadgetry is broken.
Excellent food, our server person Lexi was outstanding. Super friendly and professional. Shes an absolute asset to your restaurant!
Nice historical museum with some hands on activities for kids. The Halloween event was fun!
Its an interesting place. Like the dishes they had on display. One pattern looked kind of familiar. Looked like something Mom may have had
Employees of McClung Collection were most helpful.
Excellent, & well organized... would need several days to see & read everything. Well definitely return.
Interesting and neat history. The interactive sections were very enjoyable!
Inexpensive but very informative! Gives a great overview of the history of East TN & has a great collection. The docent was very friendly & helpful.
It is always great to go there and spend the day doing genealogical research. Wish I had more time to go.
I enjoy history and there is a lot of good information here. It was time well spent.
If youre new to the area or just interested in one of the most interesting parts of the South, then visit this museum.
Beautiful displays. My first visit.
An absolute blast!!! Full of so many wonderful exhibits! Highly recommend everyone who wants to experience East Tennessee history like they never could should visit. Loved Loved Loved!!
Everyone should take the time to visit this remarkable display of local and area history. So interesting!
Very thorough tour through the history of the area. Citizens made many contributions to our nation.
This place was so overwhelmingly amazing! We found it completely by accident, and enjoyed it immensely. It is well stocked with tid bits from different eras of East TN history, and reminded me of how much I love being an East Tennesseean. Crazy how a museum in your home state can make you feel that much more at home. An absolute gem stuffed with great artifacts, images, and sounds of the past. I will definitely be revisiting!
Great museum, good fresh displays whith actual relics from history not just imitations
Great displays and value! Got to see lots of cool, unique artifacts. I think they could stand more critical look at parts of the states history like convict labor in mines, but I generally thought the displays were representative.Especially a fan of Davy Crockett artifacts and impressed with the short and frank treatment of his life.Keep fighting the good fight, Tennessee!
Lots of information/ history, and friendly staff. A great attraction.
East Tennessee Historical Society has all the updated resource for anyone who wants to create his or her very own family tree.My youngest son Rain wanted to create his very own family tree.He was able to complete his DNA and family tree, after a couple of years of research with his mom.He was able to complete his family tree through ancestry data information located at the East Tennessee Historical Society. My youngest son called his family tree, Sir Knight Rain Fields because he was able to find a very famous Knight in his ancestry history. The ancestry data information is free to use at the East Tennessee Historical Society
Lots of new things to learn. Going to have to make another trip to have more time than we did. 2 hours just wasnt enough!
Neat museum with a huge amount of artifacts. Wished it didnt gloss over the death associated with slavery or events such as the trail of tears
An awesome museum for learning everything about East Tennessee history. Its great value, the exhibits are really well put together and the staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Im from the UK and dont have the same level of US history knowledge as many visitors but I really enjoyed it and learnt a lot.Recommend it if youre in Knoxville.
Very interesting local history.
I couldnt believe sheer volume of regional history information available at this place. The building houses more than one history related group so its like one stop shopping! All the information is FREE and people that work here are glad to help you in your searches. Its in a beautifully restored area of downtown Knoxville with restaurants and parking available.
Unique and fun museum. I loved the black history month portion.
Lots of amazing information and displays of the history of Knoxville.
Fascinating history of East Tennessee. Really interesting exhibits, rich in many stories of this interesting part of the world. Definitely worth a visit
Great exhibits tell the history of East Tennessee. The streetcar near the entrance is one of the best additions. Admission is just $5 and free on Sundays.
If you want to know TN. go here.
It was a fun place to visit and it has a nice gift shop.
Excellent !! Displays were well though out. Building very well taken care of.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff!
The exhibits here are well-designed, historically significant, and locally-relevant. The museum is one of the smaller but more focused types. In this case, the focus is on Tennessee history. That being said, the museum is hardly small, as it takes up most of a city block. You can view the whole thing in an afternoon if you arent going to interact with everything. If you are the sort of person who has to 100% every museum you visit (like me!), then this one can keep you occupied for an entire day.A museum is an odd sell for a review. If you are big on museums, then youll love this one. If you arent, then this one wont change your mind. Ultimately, I decided to give it a five-star rating because it is an excellent specimen of what it sets out to be. Did I like it better than the Smithsonian or the British Museum? No, but that doesnt mean that it deserves any less than a perfect score because it treats its chosen subject with reverence, respect, and thoroughness. In short, I would recommend it to anyone interested in what this place is offering.
Good regional history.
Awesome history
Fun and informative
Great layout and super interesting
Came here on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised that entrance was by donation only - I really appreciate that a number of attractions in Knoxville take this approach. It makes visiting so seamless and easy!I likely could have spent more time here, as this museum is a wealth of information - the museum charts Tennessee history all the way from the earliest indigenous peoples up to the modern era. Theres even a little section talking about the rich history of country music and the prominent artists that hailed from Tennessee - you can even hear some clips of songs! Really terrific stuff.A must see if youre in the area. The museum is right in the middle of the charming downtown Knoxville area, as well, so youll have plenty more to do within walking distance once youre done.
See for yourself!
Free, well organized exhibits, interesting content
Really nice museum, makes you really think about how tn has changed and in other ways it hasnt
We had a great time and it was good for the whole family. We really enjoy the Christmas open house. The kids made crafts and walked around the museum . My 8 year old boy had lots and lots of questions.
Great place
Excellent exhibit on Black lives in East Tennessee, much of it unfamiliar even to us who lived through it.
I attended a genealogical workshop here. All of the staff were very friendly and incredibly helpful. The building itself looks really good as well. I never would have known part of it was original, and part of it was built in the early 2000s! Loved this place!
Very enjoyable for all museum buffs..
Having moved here about a year ago Ive become increasingly interested in East Tennessees history. I found the couple of hours I spent in the museum gave me a good overview. The exhibits are well laid out and engaging. Well worth a visit.
I really loved this place! The building itself is a historical landmark! I recommend this to anyone eager to learn about east Tn!
So many interesting historical items! Great place!
Its a fun place to go to learn about the history of East Tennessee. I think it was only $5 a ticket? Youll probably spend about an hour or two inside. Easy to walk around. Would recommend to anyone visiting Knoxville for the first time.
Greyhound was delayed for a few hours so I visited this museum. 98% of items are authentic and the originals. I enjoyed the originally built 1800s cabin, early 1900s Cadillac vehicle, exhibits you can physically touch, and especially the gift shop. There is a lot of detail placed into every exhibit and backed by first hand account and witnesses. This place should definitely be on the visit list when in Knoxville.
Easy museum to visit.
Very nice & informative museum. Great way to spend an afternoon
Employees are very helpful and knowledgeable. Most anything you want to research they can steer you to the right area. If you can’t find your information they make suggestions for other areas to search. We are fortunate to have these dedicated people.
A great wealth of knowledge. Suggest turning off external noises. Also rotate video faster.
A little bit of everything from frontier life to old time general stores to a Cadillac. A slice of Eastern Tennessee history.
So interesting, and the staff was wonderful. Several of them took the time to talk to my boys about various pieces in the museum and upcoming displays that will be com ohhhh ng to the museum! Great place to check out in Knoxville!
This is a well done highly produced low-tech experience. It was refreshing to experience the museum without an in your face technology overlay. They have great videos and many of the artifacts are priceless.I especially loved the infographics. Especially, interested in the graphic that showed how the majority of the region chose to stay part of the United States of America during the civil war.My takeaway from the museum is that East Tennessee is a rugged community that breaks many stereotypes. The quality of the museums production reflects the quality of the regions people.
Easy and enjoyable
Nicely laid out history of East TN (blue ridge mountains and Knoxville, esp). Staff is friendly and knowledgeable on the subject. Gift shop features local artists as well as nice collection of books about area.
A very informative and interactive museum that traces the history of East Tennessee (not just Knoxville) from pre-colonial times to the present. Through videos, audio, and storyboards, the story is told through the people who lived/live here. This is a relatively small museum and can be toured easily in 60-90 minutes. Admission is free on Sundays. It’s well worth a visit.
Sunday afternoon visit was enjoyable. Quiet, interesting and informative. Friendly staff.
Good size for a museum downtown. There’s a lot of information and interesting exhibits. I ended up spending a couple of hours. Definitely worth the $5 admission for adults.
Wonderful place to spend the afternoon. Exhibits cover many periods of East TN history. Weve been several times and always enjoy going back.
One of the very best historical museums in this region. the displays are first class and extremely interesting - even if you dont like history! A place not to be missed in Knoxville, TN.
Loved East Tennessee History Museum in Downtown Knoxville, TN. Great information about the land, music and people. So excited to see special exhibit of Sergeant York, World War 1 Hero. Perfect for kids and awesome gift shop. Downtown Nashville has many shops and cafes too!
The Alvin York exhibit is very well done. We have planned a trip to his home place in Pall Mall, TN to learn more about this remarkable hero. We hope to attend the upcoming lecture on WWI also. Than you for these opportunities.
From Native Americans to the Civil War to the great depression to the modern day this museum truly has a piece from every era of East Tennessee history plus there’s also a gift shop which is very neat having lots of fun things to buy things to buy so if you are a history buff this truly is a place to go
Increased our knowledge of Tennessee by 1000%. Outstanding exhibits and layout. Informative text and wonderful graphics. Among the best historical museums weve visited. Not to be missed!
This little museum us another part of The Knoxville Museum Crawl. Visiting this place takes you back to the history of Knoxville and surrounding. Visit and interact with some exhibits are fun. There us an entire library in the research room that houses loads if genealogical and historical account books. There are traveling and permanent exhibits. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors, and FREE for children 16 and under. Admission is FREE each Sunday. Parking can be difficult. Three local parking lots surround the museum and they can be expensive upwards of 10.00 a day.
Informative and enjoyable.
Really enjoy the museum as well as the genealogy/historical floor where you can take classes on genealogy.
First time here & I enjoyed it tremendously. Being a history fan, this was a great place that sums up a portion of East Tennessees history. Highly encourage a stop here if youre visiting or even traveling through Knoxville.
Loved this place, spent two hours and didnt see it all. They have a great year round exhibit along with a special temporary themed exhibit. Very pleasant and interesting with friendly staff.
This place was way cool. Im not an ET native, but Ive lived here over 10 years. Ive learned quite a bit about this area over that time, but this taught me so much more. You will not regret the few bucks that it costs to enter. Remember that you can also visit an extension of the Knox county library and archives in the same building.
Nice museum. The kids really enjoyed it. Kind of dry, but very educational and interesting for those who are interested in local history.
I have spent many days researching local East Tennessee history and records here. The museum is nice and staff are very nice as well. The McClung Collection on the 3rd Floor is a researchers paradise! They have a vast collection of books, records on microfilm, and historical artifacts tied to the region. Check them out!
An excellent presentation of Eastern Tennessean history. The displays were engaging and used varied methods to engage viewers. I very much liked the curation and use of personal stories to depict the regions history to the current age. Definitely well worth the time for a visit.
This place was Magnificent..definitely a must see great prices, friendly staff, clean facility everything about it was Awesome
Great place to learn of the history of eastern Tennessee. Loved the old time apothecary, as well as the section on music... Nice small gift shop, clean restrooms... Well worth the price
Using bigger on the inside technology this museum spans a much larger area than I thought. Found it very interesting and the staff suoer friendly and helpful. Would highly recomemend!
Great museum with a LOT of stuff. Use to be free though. Costs $5 per person now. Well worth it though.
My son had a field trip here and it was so fun and educational. Our guide/speaker was amazing. Kept the kids attention the whole time.
Really the best regional museum I have ever been to. Covers all aspects of life in East Tennessee, even the voices of minorities are heard here. Beautiful place with so much to see!
The layout was very elaborate. An excellent rendition of the history of East Tennessee.
Had a great time learning about my fianceé and her Familys past. The selection is fairly large if you are looking for East TN genealogy.
Very nice museum. Great number of historic artifacts all the way from before European settlement till present day. Very informative and friendly staff.
