Hip coffeeshop with light vegetarian fare, loud music, and lots of students. The menu is short, consisting of crêpes, soup, salad, granola, coffee, tea, beer, and cider. I love that it’s so local/organic/fair-trade focused. Haven’t been here for a show but hear the live music is great.

We stopped in here for breakfast while staying downtown. The service was pretty good, but the food was just ok. The crepes had kind of a plastic-y texture, but the fillings were good. My wife said the black coffee of the day was pretty bitter, but I did enjoy my hot cocoa. Overall, it was ok, but probably would not return for breakfast (although it looked like a fun place to see some live music!).

Its cute and a very relaxed atmosphere. Service is friendly. Chai latte weak on spice. Maple latte pretty yummy. Crepes are average. Berry crepe with heavily sweetened frozen berries was a bit of a let down. Mushrooms in the savory crepe we had were well cooked and tasty. Good place to do a bit of work and enjoy a casual breakfast

Delicicious crepes, the only reason for the 4 star review is the staff is often slow at wiping off tables, if they even come out to do that. But definitely worth a visit for a crepe.

Fantastic hang! Whether having a meeting, listening to live music or just trying to get work done...this little cafe is a true local gem! And the food? Wonderful and just off-center enough to be unique! Oh...and the salads are made with clearly fresh ingredients. I love how intimate this place is and still tell my guests not to miss this gem! Thanks for being my office away from home!

Stopped here one morning for some breakfast and computer work during a two month road trip. This place seems to have it all, great food, atmosphere, and music! Unfortunately, we didnt get to see any music that day, but the crepes were great, and the place felt very homey and relaxing.Would definitely recommend you stop in and check out the root note! One of our favorite coffee shops we visited across the country.

We really enjoyed our crepe and the atmosphere, it is a neat unique place. However, we both agreed the cocktails were not good at all (were hoping they would be more like the amazing ones The Mint had, since same ownership). It looks like they know what they are doing with coffee, but not on the cocktails. We also had to pay a cover charge to get in even though the (so-so) music ended not long after we got our drinks and food. We didnt expect a cover charge in the first place, and wouldnt have paid if we knew when the music was ending. We miss The Mint and were hoping this would be a replacement in our local lineup ... but it just didnt do it for us, and it just didnt feel like it was a fit for us.

I would recommend this cozy, eclectic and hip organic Cafe to anybody visiting this area. They have a delicious crepe menu with both Savory lunch crepes and sweet dessert crepes. They are made fresh to order. You do need to order at the bar, then they bring it to your table. They also have great options for organic alcoholic beverages.

Really fun, funky little place. They serve many varieties of tea, coffee, sodas and food. One occasion there was live music, it was a tad bit loud, but not overwhelming. The music was appropriate for the setting as well as the crowd. The price is what you would expect for a pseudo crunchy granola type coffee house (a bit more than McDs). That said, The Root Notes atmosphere wont make you want to heave your ingested chicken byproduct nuggets like at those golden arches.Enjoy...

For a small place, these guys get some great performances. Only reason why I have this rated at a 4 of 5 is that the menu specializing in crepes isnt really my thing and many of the music talent they get pack the place soo much you cant move. About the menu, there is only one item on it that I like. But I had to talk to them about it and they were able to make sure I would enjoy it... and they have a very well educated staff about their crepes. I would make it 4.5 stars if I could because the Beer and Wine they have is TOP NOTCH! If you visit, you just need to talk to them and they will find you something.

The root note is a good place, but if youre going just for coffee, Id advise another place. Youre going to pay a little more, but youre paying for the environment more than the drinks. It is beautifully and tastefully decorated though it can be very dim. The environment is very calming, and gives a sense of serinity, though it isnt quiet. If it was brighter, however, it wouldnt be as nice. I do recommend 8t t9 my friends.

The place has one of the worst doors to go through. The owner may think its part of the vibe or ambiance, but its not safe and in fact dangerous. Just as I was leaving today and due to the lack of a handle on the inside (just bolts sticking out), I got a pretty bad cut (see picture). I cant imagine an old person, pregnant woman, or a child finding it easy to go through those doors. Hope they will do something about it...

Great atmosphere, food/beverage selection, awesome staff, and comfortable seating. Has a vast array of different types of events it hosts i.e. open mic night, live music, and more! Day and nights are completely different vibes to enjoy such as meeting up with someone for coffee and/or crepes, studying, leisurely reading or relaxing, or a fairly priced meal. 10/10 in my opinion the owners and staff have created a great place to add to the downtown La Crosse’s variety of local businesses to offer.

I come here very often. I am a graduate student at UW La Crosse and enjoy drinking coffee. They make good pour overs and their consistent and very specific food menu of multiple crepe options and chili and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies can be good snacks. The interior is eclectic and made out of a lot of reclaimed furniture; the aesthetic is that of a coffee shop operating out of a run down apartment and THAT IS THE POINT. There are holes in the ceiling and wobbly tables. Its also quite dark, so its not much of a homework or business spot. Lots of great music is played in this space (live and otherwise). I recommend the Root Note as a daily hang out option, but not for someone looking to get some homework done or for those that prefer an open space, minimalist, well-crafted edges type of coffee spot like you see a lot in other markets. The Root Note does an awesome job and markets to a specific clientele in near perfection. As a part of this clientele, I must say I love this place.

Probably the best espresso in LaCrosse! The oatmilk latte is also a great choice. Their crepes (both sweet and savory) are wonderful but slightly expensive. If you want to study here, I do not suggest coming here in the evening (with the exception of jazz night) as it tends to be louder during these times.

Review №82

The staff at The Root Note were friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. We came in the middle of the afternoon where it was a tough decision between coffee and their other offerings of beer and wine. In the end we got a mocha, good; chai, delightful with a good balance of milk and spice; and Italian sodas made which had a delicate flavour that suggest an in house concoction.
