I brought my vehicle because my car was making a lurching motion. I was a little wary about bringing it in because the last few times I brought it, they couldn’t figure out what was going on. Long story short, my dad was able to figure out and fix the problem. I spent well over $1,000- probably closer to $2k- for them to not be able to figure this out.Fast forward to this past Monday.When I called, a man named Jim answered and set me up for an appointment the next day. I met him the next morning and he was very personable, professional, and upfront about what the process would be as far as figuring out what tests would be done to diagnose what was wrong with my car. I go home. Sure enough, I got a call about 40 minutes later. The mechanic, Lance, called and told me what he found. I was a little nervous about the quote he gave me since it would be over $1k again. I was a bit reluctant at first, but I needed my car back in working condition. So, I gave Lance the go-ahead.Around 4pm, he calls me to tell me my car was finished. I ended up getting there late due to a work deadline (sorry, Jim and Lance) but they waited for me. Lance went into a little more detail about what had happened and how that was causing the lurching as well as the alignment he did on my tires. At that point I handed over my credit card, hoping that this visit was worth the price I would be paying for it.What a difference. As soon as I headed out of the lot and drove down the road, I could feel the difference immediately. I feel like my car is driving better now than when I first purchased it. The way the car maneuvers is so smooth, that at first I was almost in disbelief. I wrote all this to say that I am so happy and so relieved that I trusted my vehicle to Jim and Lance. I had been going to Family Auto for a couple of years before the pandemic hit. I don’t know if the owners sold, or if all the old employees left, but it seems like it’s been a change for the best. I am incredibly grateful for Jim and Lance (especially being a female customer, you never know if you’re getting ripped off or not) and for their transparency. I will definitely go back to them now that I feel truly confident in their ability to fix my car, and to recommend them to my family and friends.

I am very happy with the service that I received from Family Auto Service. I took my wife’s 2013 Hyundai Elantra there for a long over due wheel bearing. They took care of it and found the control arm bushings were basically gone. They got it in and out the same day. So happy that all the little noises I’ve been hearing while going down the road are now gone. I worked with Lance and Carlo. Both very professional and polite. I love going here. Super friendly people. Very knowledgeable. Any question you have they have an answer. I recommend doing there 40 point inspection. Maybe you dont have to do the work on the car right away. But they can spot out an issue way ahead of time. Which gives you time to save up money to do the work.

Summary:- Charged me $232 an hour for labor- Marked up a $70 dollar part to $497- Marked up a $66 part to $286- Sold me 6 spark plugs for $167- Misquoted me $1,100 dollars on the phone, charged me for $1,970The check engine light came on in my 1996 Tacoma a few days ago and I went to Family Auto Service to fix it. To get straight to the point, there is no value to be had here. In fact, the prices they charge can only be described as predatory.When I brought my truck in, I knew there was a problem with the EGR system after going to AutoZone and using their free diagnostic tool. The mechanic at Family Auto Service told me that the EGR vacuum had failed and that there had been misfires so he recommended changing out the spark plugs as well. There hadnt been any misfires registered on the engine computer when I checked it at AutoZone, but I assumed that maybe they had happened in the few miles I had driven my truck since then. On the phone, he quoted me for $1,100 dollars. This was a steep price since I had assumed the EGR system would only cost about $500 to fix on the high end if nothing had gone too wrong. Im not a mechanic though, so I decided to trust them and go through with the work. Big mistake.When I came to pick up my truck, I found my bill was actually $1,970. Immediately I was shocked about the discrepancy. I asked the clerk, but they just kept repeating that the difference was tax. I relented and paid the bill because I figured they had already done the work and that it must have really been that much.After looking at the recipient I can see I was thoroughly ripped off.- The EGR VACUUM SOLENOID, part number VST007, is a non-OEM part that retails for $70 dollars on Amazon, which they sold to me for $496.99.- The EGR MODULATOR, part number VS111, is also non-OEM that retails about $66 dollars on Amazon, which they sold to me for $285.99.- They sold me 6 spark plugs for $167.94, which they claim are OEM. The most expensive set of 6 OEM spark plugs from Toyota retails for $66 (about $11 per plug).- They charged me $929.00 for labor. I dropped by car off at 9AM and called me to pick it up at 1PM. Assuming they worked on it for all of those 4 hours, that comes out to a labor rate of about $232.25 an hour.I called them back the next day to confront them about their pricing and the fact that my windshield washer reservoir was still leaking (I had asked them to fix it along with everything else), and the person on the phone got very defensive, insisting they had correctly quoted me and that they dont decide the price of the parts, the computer does. They offered me a free synthetic oil change a ($50 dollar value!) and to fix the tank if I brought my car back, but I dont feel comfortable leaving my single most valuable possession in the hands of people I cant trust. I will never be coming back.

My first time at Family Auto was a month or so ago and I had my brakes done and today I was greeted by Jim who also was the gentleman that greeted me last month who is the perfect “Man at the counter” you want new customers to be greeted by and along with Carlo ( Who is a car guru whiz kid ) quickly figured out why my car was not shifting out of park and since I’m a contractor for LYFT every day without my car is a day without revenue so super kudos to these two fine and honest representatives of Family Auto!

They completed a 45-point inspection along with the oil change and provided an itemized list of services they suggested based on my mileage and how much each cost—allowing me to decide if/when I would have these services performed. To top things off, the oil change only took about 30-45 minutes! I’ve waiting hours before at other businesses and afterwards was pressured into extra services my car didn’t even need. Not here! Found family auto service online, since la Mesa facility is the shortest distance where I leave, have my e46 bmw towed by triple A. Able to talk to the nice lady in the front office Betsie and told my car problems to Carlo the service advisor and he explained to me in a very informative way. Call them back the very next day and able to talk to Jim and explained what is going on with my car. To make the story short found faulty dme the reason why my car won’t start at all. Been to a couple of car repair shop close to where I leave, but always give me a turn around, meaning they don’t know exactly what is wrong with my car. Carlo and his crew were very knowledgeable for what they do so I was able to bring my car home the way I expected. Pricing is very fair and honest in fact Carlo was so nice give me good discount. I came back here to have my car serviced after previously having an issue they don’t service. They were so kind and informative I knew I would come back.... fast forward. This shop is incredible. Best experience I’ve ever had at a repair facility. I needed a prepurchase inspection done. I was in a hurry and they were super busy but managed to squeeze me in and get It done within a few hours. I was really impressed how knowledgeable the entire staff is and what an amazing system they have in place to communicate with the technicians via radio to save time. I highly recommend them.

We took the truck in due to AC not working. The diagnostics process was amazing. They were I. Constant contact explaining every move.The work was done to perfection. My husband is a retired transmission mechanic and appreciated the professionalism!

My car stopped on the side of the freeway. Took it in to find out the car needed an engine replacement. Put 3k in, only to drive off with my AC no longer working. They told me to bring it in and they’d fix it free (as they should). On the drive over, the check engine light comes on, and they call me to let me know that there was yet another piece that needed replaced. Three hundred and thirty dollars they were going to charge me. Called other mechanics and they said they should be doing that work for free, and the part was overpriced. Negotiated the price to fifty dollar difference, paid to get the car back and walk out to my boyfriend to tell him we’re good to go. Then, realized we didn’t have the keys, so we walked in, asked for them. Dude says he handed to me, and he didn’t. So my boyfriend goes in and magically they had the keys still.Save your money for San Carlos auto services. Better service, communication, and pricing. I won’t be back to this place, even if they discount their oil changes to half.

My experience with this auto shop was excellent. They assisted me with a major repair that I was putting off since I was quoted at much higher rates else where. They not only had a competitive fair rate, they provided above and beyond service. They provide shuttle service as well. You can tell they are a family and treated you as if you were too. I brought my Porsche in for its smog service And dealt with Gary as a service writer and Tommy as a technician. Both of them are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. They were communicative, efficient, and extremely friendly. I highly recommend them for any of your service needs. Tommy even went so far to give me a call after I left their facility because he saw a couple drops of coolant in his stall That he keeps extremely clean. His phone call was just to let me know that he saw those drops and to check underneath my car when it was parked to see if it was possibly from my vehicle even thought he didn’t see anything when it was in. Turns out that someone had just walked through his stall with a little bit of fluid on a part or can etc. that had dripped off. But the courtesy of a call with genuine concern and genuine feeling of helpfulness behind it was so far beyond what I could ever expect from a service center. I really appreciate everything they do with extreme professionalism

Car was done quickly and it runs much more smoothly. They take pictures of recommended maintenance and categorize it by priority for you. It was pretty cool. They also cleaned the air in my car for free with some machine. Bexy at the front desk was especially delightful and made me laugh.

As a woman I am always guarded when it comes to have my vehicles serviced. I have had previous experience with explanations of what my car needed in a way I could understand. I have been price gouge and had unnecessary services rendered. I didnt leave feeling this way with Family Auto Service after my 2014 KIA Soul was serviced. Herb my service advisor provided a detail report of a what was needed and why at a great value. My KIA has a new auto service place for the duration of its maintenance needs.

********** SCAM ALERT **********$23 oil change.Ive been here twice for an oil change. The staff likes to give me a long list of recommended fixes which I dont need. Makes me not like this place.It is especially disturbing to me considering it publicizes on its front desk walls that its ownership is Christian.I believe one of the markers of a not-trustworthy auto service shop is when they tell their customers they need to repair something that doesnt require it.I am going to look for a new place to change my oil.

Very disappointed. Went in to get my check engine light and heater diagnosed. I paid $68.75 for a diagnose on my heater and $137.50 to diagnose the check engine light. And they didnt diagnose anything. All the paper said on my receipt was additional test were necessary. So I wasted two hundred that I could have spent on a tune up and oil change.

As a business owner myself it pains me to leave a bad review on any business. But my experience with this repair center has pained me for well over 5 years. Yes, thats how long it has been since my bad experience at this place. I never bother to leave a review back then, but Ive been meaning to do it since.I used to owned a 2010 Toyota Yaris sedan, bought it brand new from the dealership, and took it to the dealership for service until it was paid off in 2015. The dealership was a bit too far from my house so I decided to take it to an independent shop for regular maintenance. I felt good taking it somewhere independent and family owned. I felt like I was actually helping a family and their employees by taking my business to them and not some company dealership network.The vehicle was in very good condition, no issues what so ever, after all it was a Toyota. I baby my cars and I knew the vehicle didnt have any major issues. My first visit to Bob was for a regular oil change. They inspected my car and immediately came out with a laundry list of things I needed to get replace because they were aging. The guy helping me out was very firm on the issues and made it sound like things were just about to fall apart. He went on to rant about preventive maintenance (which I do agreed with) and all about that. But I just couldnt believe my vehicle needed over $4,000 in maintenance. The car had never had any issues and I kept up with my maintenance at the dealership for the 5 years I had the car.I decided to just go with my gut feeling and not replace something that wasnt broken. The only item I decided to replaced was the serpentine belt. A week later I started hearing a loud screeching noise every time I turn on the vehicle (only when the engine was cold). I knew it was the belt, it was loose or something. I took the vehicle back to them and told them about the noise, told them they have to make it tighter for the noise to stop. But they refuse to do any work because they couldnt reproduce the noise (of course, the engine was already warm up when I drove up to their shop). I had this issue for almost two years. I made numerous request for them to fix it under their warranty and I never got a resolution. The guy that was always trying to up sell me parts and services increasingly became noticeably upset with me. I could just tell, every time I go in the office for an oil change and to tell them about the noise he would just react to me like if I was trying to get a free service. I cant remember his name, I have the original invoice with a Gary name on it but I just dont know if he was the person officially signed off on the invoice. I knew he drove a yellow Jeep Wrangler, two door, always parked right outside the front door.Two years after this I had enough of trying to deal with them and simply returned my business to the dealership where I was always treated as a family. At the dealership they not only talk to you nicer, but if Im wrong on something then the mechanic doing the work will come out with the manager and show me how or why something is right or wrong. At Bobs is the other way around, you are the customer and you dont know anything about mechanic work so you should just take our word for it.After going back to the dealership they told me the serpentine belt was loose and they would adjust it free of charge. How about that!Also, not sure how a simple serpentine belt, $14 at Auto Zone, is up-priced to $54 at Bobs.I understand they now have a new name, and hopefully under new ownership and new customer service people. Just be aware, do your research before you make a decision on repairs, search for prices on parts, and offer to buy your own parts at Auto Zone and take it to them. Then, they should just charge you for the time of actual work.A report about the Yaris, it is now 2020, the car never had any issues. All I ever did was my oil changes and normal maintenance, tires etc. I did put in new struts in the back in 2018. Everything else is still in tip top shape.

The people are friendly and the oil change service with the coupon mailer is a good value. Bexsy at the front counter is very kind and attentive to detail. Gary gave a clear understanding of repairs needed after a complete inspection was performed as part of their oil change service.

I like the fact that they can get done what you need done. If you walk in with some new parts and ask them to put them on they will do it. They also get the work done promptly. I will say the labor is a bit high but then again it goes back to the old adage, you get what you pay for. Overall i am happy with my service here. Thanks

This was the first time visit. But I will say it was a welcoming atmosphere and clean. I left the autoshop satisfied and with my car having a thorough inspection done.

I took my ‘03 Frontier with 260,000 miles on it to get the free check of my “Service Engine Soon” light. The code said it had catalytic converter problems. Bad news since the smog check was due by the end of May. Herb had his team dive into it. They found that 3 of the 4 O2 sensors were actually the problem. They replaced those and the catalytic converters came back to life.While they had the truck opened up they repaired a couple pesky leaking seals and did some routine maintenance that will probably let me get another 260,000 miles out of my workhorse... and it passed smog with flying colors.It was a lot of work but well done and at a reasonable price.

Great Service and Reasonable Price! I took my 2015 BMW 428i to have an alignment. Very few independent auto repair shops are able to do alignments on German vehicles. Jay my service advisor was very friendly and got me in right away. Service was done and the cost was reasonable compared to other auto shops. Would highly recommend them and I would go back again for both my cars automotive needs.

Family Auto Service, what can I say. Ive been back there more times than Id care to over the past few months between my two older vehicles, but each time its been met with courtesy, professionalism, fairness, detailed inspections and quality work. Plus, they didnt give me a hard time for the gummy bears they found in my air blower assembly! Robert, my service advisor is awesome - but the entire team has been great.

Overjoyed with the service, personal attention and quality at Bob Bowen! I took my truck in for an oil change and we found a few other items that needed to be done, Jay was very honest and instructed me which was most important and which can wait. And very high tech, they alerted me by text of the progress along the way and even sent pictures so I could discuss items with the technician. Highly recommend!!

I have been coming to Bob Bowens Auto Service since the end of last year when Daniel, the only mechanic I knew was honest and trustworthy, started working here.Once I brought my car in I felt comfortable, not just with Daniel but with the other staff there. They always do a thorough check of my car everytime it is in for an oil change or any other service I have had done.Here I feel like Im getting the help needed and no up selling crap which mechanics like to do.They only recommend the stuff that is actually needed and can show you why. Come here and you wont be disappointed!

I was quite happy with my experience this time with this auto shop. I brought my car in for an ignition coil repair. As most shops would do, they usually tell you to repair everything whats wrong with your car. Which is somewhat appropriate so the owner would know. But this time, I like the part that they just entered it in your paperwork and let you know about it, rather than forcing you to have it done. They also asked me to replace all the ignition coils as recommended, but the thing is I wasnt prepared for this. So they helped me out and only repaired the most critical ones. Saved me money at this time and will surely come back for the rest of the repair when finances are more permitting. Thank you for the great service.Edit: 6-21-2018Knocked off STARS. New management means new policy and they sucked! Im not going to go back here anymore. I can bore you with what happened but the gist of it was money grab. Blaming everything for not getting diagnostics first and even when diagnostics was done, they ask for more money because the cause wasnt repaired. I cut my loses and just left for another auto repair. Not trying to scare you with my review but if you wanna try, maybe you have better luck than I do, so try it for yourself.

Had some severe toe issues with my alignment after replacing some suspension parts. Went in for a fix and they finished the 4 wheel alignment within the hour. It’s as good as new!

Awesome work! Awesome staff! Went in for some driveshaft work, and in the process the mechanic noticed my water pump was leaking. A lot of shops will just TELL you what they found, and ask if youd like to get it fixed. But with all the issues Bobs ended up finding, they SHOWED me first hand and informed me if it was a major issue or if it was one I could hold off on. Daniel (the front desk guy that was helping me) even took off some labor and parts charges in the end! Very professional of them. The shop got all the work done in a fair amount of time, the free shuttle service is a great idea, and the prices are fair. The one and only complaint I have is I wish the front office kept me more up to date about the work being done....I had to call twice to get an update on one of my visits. But, it did seem like a very busy day; all the bays were occupied. So that experience may not be the norm. Im still a very happy customer and will be coming back for all my auto work!

Service is good. Staff is knowledgeable. I am happy to pay for a good mechanic. However, I was shocked at their tire costs. I was charged $180/tire + shipping (near $750 total) when they cost $130/tire + free shipping from the manufacturer ($520). This cost did not include labor.The relationship between a car owner and their mechanic is one built on trust. If I cant trust my mechanic to deliver accurate part quotes, how am I supposed to trust their work?

Repaired vehicle promptly without an appointment. Did not try to “upsell” other services.

I was very happy with Family Auto Service, Herb was really helpful and was able to diagnose my truck issues on both of my trucks and fix them. I would highly recommend them!
