I went for my mothers birthday, and have been before and have had amazing experiencea. Today was completely different. We got sat right away and was greeted in a timely matter, however the server didnt greet with water, explaining they just put it in the fridge, which is understandable. We put in our whole order, including drinks and the server left. We waited 40 minutes for two pepsis, a milkshake and the boozy lemonade. And we still did not get water, instead when we asked was told oh I asked you if you wanted some When no, you told us it was put in the fridge and we expected to get it when it was cold. We ordered fries for an appetizers, which came out with our food, which we got an hour after we sat. The two burgers came out with soggy buns and were not brioche as stated, until we got a new bun. The sauteed onions on the regular cheeseburger was not sauteed, as well as the romain lettuce On the signature burger appeared like the tips of two spinach leaves, and were very tiny and wilted. The only redemption was the dessert, which we had to ask for even though I told them prior it was a birthday dinner, and even then was met with some doubt before being told that they would do what they muster up bc they dont do anything really, even tho a table in the section next to us had a birthday and got their dessert with no raised eyebrows. I am a service worker, a server myself, and I do not normally leave reviews and I give many chances but tonight I felt very underwhelmed and very upset bc the service was not up to par with what Ive seen many times before. For a slow Thursday night I was very insulted about how terrible the food and dining experience was.
This is the best place to take the chocolate lover in your life and still get some other good food. The selection is amazing and the service is fast. The chocolate martini is a great way to start things off and the fondue puts a great cap on the dinner. I would reccomend this to anyone with a sweet tooth.
Great place to have some social time- especially for the chocolate lovers. Everything was first rate from start to finish- drinks, apps and the meal. Fresh, high quality ingredients and served promptly. Server was very attentive, right down to extra touch for my daughters birthday. Prices are very reasonable for eating in the city. Worth a return visit the next time we are in Philly.
I visited on a Sunday at opening and was seated immediately. I have deducted two stars because the service was basically nonexistent. The server came up to our table about 15 minutes after we had been seated and brought water. We placed an order for drinks and were given the wrong beverages and had to go up to the bar ourselves to get the correct drinks because the server hadn’t returned to check in. Quite awhile later the server came and took our food order. The food and drinks were enjoyable. The chocolate shop seemed to be lacking in inventory and didn’t have many options to choose from.
This was my first time going. Loved that it was a chocolate restaurant. I went for my birthday. Staff was friendly and waiter made great choices for my party to try. I ordered a chicken cheesesteak waffle sandwich and it was good. Will go back
I visited the same place in 2018 and it was an amazing experience. Back again in 2021 and not the same. The chocolate for the fondue was cold as ice! No one bothered to light up the candle at the bottom. The brownies and cake was crumbling as I picked it up and couldn’t hold it. They replaced it and the same problem! So, just had to give up.
This chain has always had a special place in my heart (and probably always will!) but I felt led to write this post after an encounter we had yesterday evening. We were harshly discriminated against last night by the most unprofessional, nasty manager I have ever experienced in the industry. We will not be giving business to the restaurant again until new management takes over. I truly wish we had recorded the interaction, but we were in such shock and dismay in the moment, we just left. As soon as someone from management reads this, please reach out as we would like a formal apology to be issued. Thank you.
I will NEVER go back to this restaurant again. My partner and I are regulars here and always bring out-of-town guests here. My partner and I decided to go out during a TORNADO WATCH AND FLASH FLOOD to celebrate our anniversary. As we ran out of the house we realized that we had forgot our masks. We assumed that a restaurant as pricey as Max Brenner, that they would provide us with a disposable mask as we walked in. My partner and I are both vaccinated and had covered our faces with our shirts as we walked in (feeling terrible we forgot our masks.) We were barely greeted by the host when she refused to seat us and would barely speak to us because we didnt have a mask. When we asked if she was serious she just kept shaking her head and saying ‘nope.’ She was one of the only people wearing a mask in the restaurant as we looked around while we were leaving. They have now lost our business and future business we were going to spend there. However, as we ran in the rain, we were greeted by a worker at the neighboring restaurant/bar Good Dog Bar as one of the staff welcomed us in with open arms and provided us with a disposable mask. The service, food and staff were great at Good Dog Bar and we have now found a new place to bring family and friends. If you are thinking about eating at Max Brenner you should reconsider and go to Good Dog Bar instead
When ordering, we were told three different times that they didn’t have what we wanted. The service was also lackluster, I had to call for their attention more than one time even though the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy. The overall experience made me feel as though it wasn’t worth the money. I’ll likely only visit the New York location, seeing as they give more of a fine dining experience with a greater sense of urgency.
Max brenner is always fantastic. I’m Australian and always knew Max Brenner for its desserts. Going to the locations in America and trying their main course food changed my whole opinion on their brand! The food is amazing, just like all their desserts. I would absolutely recommend going here!
Just got home from this place. What a joke!!!!I love chocolate so when I read that they have chocolate baskets and I saw that it was also a restaurant I called and made reservations for myself and my husband for 430p on a Saturday.Since our first time I inquired about parking and was told a specific parking garage to use and that the parking ticket will be stamped at the restaurant and parking will be free.We got to the restaurant and they said we did not have any reservations but seated us.The food I gave 1star the drinks were horrible and overpriced. Back at the parking garage they were going to charge us $31.00 we called the restaurant and the manager got on the phone and said that it’s not free but $10.00 if we were at the restaurant. What a mess!!!!WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!!!!WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!
I wish this place would relocate to expand the restaurant where it doesn’t feel like a squeeze and the chocolate shop isn’t just a corner. I’ve been here during a time it was crowded and it felt as if we were packed in (prior to covid). Nonetheless, this place is unique, we enjoyed our meal, dessert and my server was great. I like their lemongrass tea as well.
Lauren(with the long awesome nails) was our waitress today. My daughter said everytime we come here she has to be our waitress. We were impressed with her service, attentiveness and warming nature. Lauren you rock!
I was so excited to try this restaurant!Heres what I can say the service was good my waitress was very helpful. The actual waffle sandwich I ordered looked beautiful in presentation but the chicken was dried out. The waffle fries and aioli sauce was definitely delicious! Would I pay 16.00 for a sandwich again nope. However the cheese fondue and chocolate fondue was amazing and all the desserts were fantastic!!
Was a lot of fun. Our waitress was a blast. So energetic. Only wish you had some non-dairy selections so I could join in the dessert fun.
The food was phenomenal. The atmosphere and service were great. I definitely recommend this place. 10 out of 10!!!
Honestly the chocolate is underwhelming. The food is decent but a bit over priced. I think the interior looks great and they have a cute gift shop inside as well. You would much rather stop by the gift shop for chocolates, mixes, and kitchenware which are quirky. As for the food, there are plenty of better places nearby if you’re looking for a more intimate environment without the price tag.
The customer service upon arrival by the hostess was terrible. Told us we needed to pull our mask up while every employee in the restaurant had mask down below there nose. Then another family came in and had a similar situation and the same hostess went on to scream at the husband and called him an ***hole, this was the most bizarre behavior I have seen in a restaurant during the whole pandemic. The manager went on to defend his employee, needless to say we did not sit down for a meal, seeing the carelessness of employees and the manager we did not feel comfortable. In addition, the atmosphere and smell of the place just seemed stale and outdated, definitely would not recommend this place with all the other options within a few minute walk. Hopefully they can straighten everything out because we really liked the one in NYC.
This place is well past its heyday. Grungy place. The chocolate pizza was just some chocolate chips with overly chewy marshmallows and peanut butter sauce on top of a very hard and barely edible crust. Not enjoyable. When it was finally brought to us seated at the bar we were asked if we wanted plates and utensils (yes, it’s messy). The waitress grabbed forks and a knife from the grey “clean” tray and literally started wiping them with a paper towel right in front of us, which turned brown. She set them down directly on the grungy bar top and went for plates. She kept inspecting plates and putting them back like they were dirty and went off looking for more. Meanwhile, we were surrounded by dirty dishes: on the bar next to us the entire time we were there, behind the counter, across the bar area by the espresso machine. Clean dishes and silverware are clearly not a priority here. Gross. There was also plated food sitting under heat lamps that didn’t move the entire time we were there. This place needs a health inspection stat. Do yourselves a favor and find somewhere else.
If Willy Wonka decided to open up a hipster restaurant instead of a massive chocolate factory, Max Brenner would be the result.A decadent, chocolate covered menu awaits any visitor to this restaurant, and for the price, what you get is quite impressive. I went with several friends who ordered a sharing fondue platter that was absolutely covered with every manner of edible chocolate conception. It even came with a small cauldron set a light for the purpose of toasting your own marshmallows.I helped myself to a caramel milkshake which was quite delicious in their signature drink me milkshake cup. My wife enjoyed a hazelnut crepe that she says she would get again in a heartbeat. If there is a Max Brenner anywhere near you and you have any affection for chocolate whatsoever, this is a must.
This place is AMAZING! Its a restaurant with a little chocolate shop attached. Whats awesome about Max Brenner is that they have a normal menu (which has burgers, salads, sandwiches, soups, etc., which are all amazing) as well as a dessert menu (crepes, pancakes, waffles CHOCOLATE PIZZA!!!!!). The hot chocolate is probably the best Ive ever had and the chocolate pizza is a must. Got a burger as main meal and it was delicious. 100% recommend!!!!
Enjoyed dinner, drinks AND dessert! Mac and cheese burger was amazing! Artichoke spinach dip was delicious. Surprisingly, everyone REALLY enjoyed the thrice baked chicken wings - give them a try! And for dessert.... shareable fondue! 😋😋😋 the best part for me..... the Affogato!! Holy cow- really excellent double shot of espresso, ice cream and drinkable chocolate- I cannot recommend this more! To top it all off - Ryan was a fantastic server 😊
Absolutely horrible, we had to leave!!! The hostess couldnt hear me, so I pulled my mask out (not down) and she yelled at me to put my mask on. I was shocked, looked around, and none (zero) of the cooks or servers had their masks on. The matter quickly escalated, we went to the manager, and he ignored our complaints. The hostess attempted to seat us, called me an explicit adjective under her breath and slammed our menu on the table.. We left and went to Cheesecake Factory.
The best chocolate restaurant in city ! It is always crowded so make sure you reserve your table ahead of time. Service is little slow but it is worth the wait. Location is very ideal, so you can grab a meal or dinner somewhere else and come here for dessert. Or they also have food menu so you can have your entire meal in the restaurant !
I only tried the spiked smores drink and it was okay not what I was expecting. But the restaurant and bar is very nice. I will be back to retry something different
The most amazing smell of really good chocolate almost knocks you over the second you step in the door. We made reservations, and they were on top of it. We were seated almost immediately. We had an appetizer, onion rings with a chocolate ranch dipping sauce. The onion rings were extremely fresh, had to have been made in house, and were excellent. Then we had our main courses which were excellent as well. I had a steak and potatoes. It was one of the best steaks Ive had in a very long time. After that came the desserts, the main reason for visiting really. The kid had one of the best milkshakes Ive ever tasted. We got a sundae, and also the churros with fondue. Everything was amazing! I highly recommend this place! It really wasnt super expensive either. For 4 people with appetizers, meals and desserts our bill was around $150. Not bad for a nice place with great, attentive staff, and amazing food! If you have a chance, give it a try!
Pub steak and potatoes compared to Capital Grille ---- all the other meals spot on --- appetizer, yum! Dessert beyond! Whenever we are headed to the city....this place is always a must!!!
Will never go back to this place me and my partner decided to go out for our two year anniversary in the middle of the flash flood warning and a tornado watch. We spend most of our special occasions going here and taking our out of town friends here as well but after tonight we will never go back. We were running out of our apartment in a rush without masks and we assumed that they would have disposable ones to give us considering it is a nice place. When we walked in (with our shirts over our faces because we felt horrible) all we received was no communication and a hostess pointing to her mask. the only person in the whole restaurant with a mask i might add. She turned us away and said we cant be served. So we went back out into the pouring rain trying to find a restaurant to eat at. We came across the good dog bar who welcomed us and gave us masks as well.
They have a really odd double standard with their mask policy. I personally watched them send away someone because they didnt have a mask when coming in the front door. Once you are seated about 15ft from the front door you can take your mask off. Our waiter also wore a mask but only over his mouth. We were seated under an air vent and needed to move because my daughter was so cold. They were very accommodating towards this but well aware of the fact that seat was chilly.Food was okay but took about 45 minutes to bring out.Dessert was good. Hot chocolate was amazing.
Me and my sister tried their dessert and it tasted great. We took it to go and they packed it nice for us. The lava cake tasted delicious and I loved the little chocolate balls on top.
I love it here so much!! I recommend ALL of my friends and family to Max Brenner and have made them fans of this place! I’ve been coming for about 3-4 years and I’ve NEVER had a bad experience. I came today on 3/13, Joe (server/manager) and Taryn (hostess) both went out of their way to accommodate us. They were so kind and patient. I cannot say enough about them, they were the best. The service here is always unreal and the employees are really the backbone of this restaurant. Food is always delicious but please bring back the pasta primavera!! :)
Wonderful drinks and staff is very nice. Will be coming back for sure the hot chocolate is incredible!
20 minutes for drinks. Cold dessert. 20 minutes to pay bill. Server spent more time talking to other workers. Ok good. Terrible service.
Went for my grandaughters 14 birthday and I must say it was a really nice place.Menu was different everything we ordered was excellent !!
Always a fun time however, meal portions were quite small but its all about the chocolate. Unfortunately they were out of a couple favorites (e.g.white chocolate chai😢).churros was good...extra extra sugary-bit too much.... Waiter was great. Loved the chocolate martini.
The ice cream was quite big and tastes so yummy. There were two side small plates around the big cup. One was additional sweetener cream and the oher one was whipped cream. I also liked the waffle fries. The service was quick, and the waiters were very nice. It was not inexpensive, but it was worth it. I will definitely come back again for the chocolate ice cream, and for the tasty sirloin burgers.
So we had two of grandchildren from Maine visiting and after the Candytopia exhibit what better way to top it off then a trip to Max Brenners (the Willy Wonka of Center City). The kids had burgers (of course) but I had the sirloin cheesesteak on a waffle which was very tasty. My wife had the Chicken finger basket and they were huge. We topped it off with the fondue which was enough to share among us four. The ambience of the store is unique and if you have kids it is worth the visit. The only negative was the cookie/ cake pieces on the fondue were dry and not really great for dipping. Other than that well worth it.
Poorly managed place. Probably under-staffed but spoils the experience completely for customers. The wait time even after making reservation is too high. The wait time for food to arrive at the table is also ridiculously long!
This place has really gone downhill. Sure the world went through a pandemic but this is a chain restaurant. The quality of the food is nothing compared to what it used to be. The menu has been reduced, ok fine but they offer hardly any savory dishes. The cheesesteak waffle has always been a staple and for whatever reason they chose to switch up the batter and use a sweet waffle with cheesesteak meat. The churros were hard as a rock. The best thing was the dipping sauce for the onion rings.
I was in Center City Shopping and was walking by, didnt have a Max Brenner Burger in a while, so I said let me go in and get something to eat & Drink, The food always on Point & Marvelous, fast service with a Smile, Its crazy how the First time I found out about your restaurant, everything else was crowded and I said whats this place and went in there, i was like WOWand one of the Waitress, told me all tha New York history on Max Brenner Restaurant, I Luv the Whole idea from there, Believe me I Appreciate U.
Our experience at Max Brenna was amazing! Our waitress Lillian was so sweet! And the food was just the right amount of sweet!
Customer service at check in was not great. No one could tell me how much longer we would have to wait even after I put my name in for a time they said would work. Our hot chocolate was cold and waiter spilled half of one and said he would bring a new one, instead he brought steamed milk to add to the spilled one and to warm up the others. We will never be back or recommend to friends or family.
What an amazing place! Chocolate, ice creams, snacks, mills shakes, desserts! So many varieties! We went here after our dinner to have something small. We just chose 2 scoops of ice creams on a waffle cone but this is what we got for $10! Probably that was the least amount for any menu item thy had but even that was so fancy! Parking could be difficult here though. Loved it!
The food was mediocre and the Mac and cheese is bland. The waitress who served my friends and I treated us poorly compared to the table seated around us and we had to ask for napkins and silverware when we were served our dishes.
Today July second 2021… I went to Max Brenner and I ordered steak and to be honest it was really bad and my jaws hurt after that and I complained about it and they said we cannot bring you anything else and the kitchen was closed and we can’t take it off from the menu 💔I used to love this place but now I can’t come again
My parents and I had the most satisfying dinner experience at max Brenner! No praise is enough for our server Lillian - apart from being a great conversationalist, she got us more spoons and silverware for dessert, refilled the water and even got a wedge for an unsteady table. She also took the time to explain the beauty of the unique hugmugs in which hot chocolate is served, where you can hug the mug to warm your hands, see the cocoa beans and texture of the hot chocolate and inhale the rich aroma as well. The rest of the food was delicious as always. Flatbread pizza and sweet chocolate waffles - sensory overload!
Best place, will be coming back and the food is delicious!!!!
This place is to die for. Their mac and cheese is amazing
Great pick for Restaurant Week...cant wait to go back!
Shakes, hot chocolate and waffle fries were all super. Dessert place and I would recommend as an option for kids if in the city. Many varieties of milkshake, hot chocolate and some alcoholic beverages. Service was just ok and the table was sticky. We were finished our food before my drink arrived.
I think the pictures speak for themselves. Everything is so sweet and delicious and (surprisingly) not gimmicky. This is our go to for a night cap dessert. Weve had dinner here before too, which was also a lot of fun, and different since they incorporate chocolate into much of their savory dishes as well.
My kids love this place because of the fondue they have fruit, cookies and brownies also my favorite is the waffle cheesesteak! Prices are pretty good seating could be better kinda tight...
Delicious food and hot chocolates! Great for date night!
Great service and delicious food! Loved our dining experience!
Colonel Sanders who?? This is how the cheesesteak guy does waffles......... The iconic chocolate martini was just a bonus!! Max Brenner knows how to brunch!! Cheesesteak was $16 and the martini $12.95, for people that know me and my frugality, I have not lost my mind. I will chalk Maxs up to a very nice splurge/treat. Staff (Laura and Maddie, hope I spelled correctly) were awesome!! Have McGriddles trained me to want my pancakes/waffles soaked in syrup, possibly. Is this why I wish Maxs Waffles had some moisture, possibly. More Martinis and everything is fine!! I like Maxs!!
I had lunch here today and ordered items off the Restaurant week menu ($20). The caesar salad, burger and chocolate dusted fries were delicious, in spite of the burger being a little more pink than I cared for - in what was supposed to be a medium well done burger. The pièce de résistance of this meal was the strawberry hazelnut crepe a la mode, accompanied by chocolate, which was simply divine. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for chocolate lovers.
Love this place!! We go here for one and only one thing... the classic fondue. We always ask them to switch the toffee dip and instead give us all 3 types of chocolate! They charge for it but its the best. Dark chocolate dip is the best and their chocolate cake is so soft and yummy!
Obviously if your not into chocolate or sweets steer clear. Best bet is to go for a simple dish or you can easily become to overwhelmed with the amounts of sweets on one dish lol whatever you do drink the water they offer to you
Restaurant with everything Chocolate. I had the Build Your Own Ice Cream Nice selection of sides with the Delicious Creamy Chocolate Fudge, Whipped Cream, chocolate jimmies, and crunchy chocolate blasts and the Two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Also The coffee is great and they use Cafe Murano.
Dont hate it but I dont love it. The drinks is the best thing here and dessert . Food is just ok. I suggest only coming here during restaurant week. Prices are way high. Food similar to ruby tuesday . But you do get the feeling of being in willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. It certainly do smell like chocolate
Used to be good... many many years ago! NOT ANYMORE!!!!!!!Never going again!
TLDR (too long didnt read AKA a summary):Bad customer service. WAY too sweet food, not quality food. Overpriced.Only fun thing about going was brainstorming what I would write in this review.1. Review:So... I was very excited to go to Max Brenner in Philly because I had been in Manhattan and had a fond memory of the experience. However, I was very disappointed with the experience.1a. About the food:The food is really expensive, not cheap, so youd hope for high quality. Well this tastes more like food from a fair. I ordered a hot chocolate in the hug mug and the waiter told me that it was really hot be careful. I took a sip and it was lukewarm, so I asked him to heat it up... and he did thankfully. Then the fondue: also lukewarm chocolate. Poor quality fruit and other dippings for the fondue. Poor quality chocolate. The best thing we got was the chocolate loaded pizza and the only reason it was better was because it had a layer of plain crust to cut some of the crazy sweetness of the pizza. This was all their food... way way too sweet but not rich or quality food, tastes like they pour sugar into it in hopes of covering up poor quality. Well it didnt work for me.1b. About customer service:Upon arrival, there werent many seats available so we were told it might be 45 minutes. Then, a manager told us they could seat us at two tables. Shortly after we saw another waiter place another group at those tables... and we were told that the manager had been mistaken. Then they told us they could seat us at two tables far away from each other - we asked if we could sit at two empty tables next to each other (our group was too large for one table) but they said no... and then as soon as we walked by the empty tables the waitress said oh you can sit here. Okay. Lots of miscommunication, disorganization and lack of customer service and care.Dont blame the people blame the establishment.
Ver chic restaurant with a cafe feel. Family friendly food especially for kids great place to hang out with friends as well. I was there with my grandkids for a birthday party and they had a great time. Staff was so attentive and accommodating to our group. I am definitely going back!! Thanks Guys
Food was ok. Not what I remembered. We went there for Brunch, as their website said it was still offered, but when we got there, it was reduced menu, which I understand due to COVID, I just wish their website better stated that.
We checked this place out on a whim. Weve heard great things and we got started at 11pm without reservations on a Saturday. The place was crowded but its a fun environment with a young crowd. The coffee is tasty and the heart shaped chocolate cake was delish. We look forward coming again.
Max Brenner is amazing. the chocolate theme is tied in well with everything. food is solid but you MUST leave room for dessert because every single dessert item is amazing! (service is usually always good too, mostly all friendly staff)
The desserts & alcoholic drinks were wonderful, but the food was so so. An expensive place for just an ok meal.
Great atmosphere and waitstaff was very attentive. OMG Quesadilla and Chocolate Cookie Dream. Definitely enough to share or bring home leftovers.
