The butter cookies are amazing. They also make one of the best cappuccinos I have ever tasted.
This place is soooo good! I was in jail for about 17 1/2 years came out went to pick my son up at Neumann Goretti, walked over and got a canolli A+++++
Having lived many years in South Philly, Varallos was a constant go-to treat. When I visit now, stopping by is a must. As you can read in almost every other review, the rum cake and cannoli are second to none. In addition to the quality of the treats, the charm of the location and winsome service only found at traditional multi-generation family-run establishments is what really makes them rightful owners of a good portion of my culinary nostalgia. If youre close by, please visit them frequently in my stead and keep them around for generations to come.
The gelato was amazing! My family and I really enjoyed enjoyed the birthday cake we picked up from here as well. See you guys the next time we’re back in Philly.
Stopped by this place out of no where from noticing their sign of having the best cannolis and definitely did not disappoint!! The prices are a little higher but definitely worth it for the quality. They have a decent amount of various cannoli flavors and a bunch of other great sweets and pastries. I also got slices of carrot cake and tiramisu which are some of my favorite. The staff are friendly and you can feel the history when you walk into their home.
This was an unexpected find one day as I was craving pastries, and they were so good I came back later in the week for more. The chocolate rum balls and strawberry tart (if they haven’t run out!) are amazing. I’ve also tried their cheesecake, cannolis, and various other small pastries that have been good as well.
This place is an institution in south Philly and unlike some of the other old school pastry shops they also make some top notch bread. This place is under the radar for some reason from outsiders like the food network and other rando eat prey love shows that visit South Philly all the time. This spot is just as good as all the other places that get all the attention so if you wanna be in the know say “yeah that place is good but have you tried Varallo Brothers ” and you will definitely get props for your South Philly street cred ... I think I’m gonna get some bread loafs from here tomorrow ...
This review is for the cannoli only! They have a nice variety of cannoli with choices being ricotta, ricotta and whipped cream, chocolate ricotta, pistachio cream, Italian cream and chocolate Italian cream. The staff are friendly and helpful and the place looks like a really nice Italian bakery. We got three cannoli, the ricotta, chocolate ricotta and ricotta with whipped cream/chocolate dipped shell. To my disappointment, all cannoli were pre-made/filled and in the glass display cases. That’s a big no no because the cream will make the shell soggy. So first the shell, it was soggy and stale, when I cut it in half it cut like a stale roll. Next is the cream, which on all three varieties was too sweet for me. I realize some people prefer a sweeter cream versus a balance between ricotta and sweetness. If you like your cream on the sweet side you will probably like this. Whether you prefer their style of cream or not, I couldn’t get past the stale soggy shell. The cannoli looked beautiful (see pix) but unfortunately they don’t come close to the gold standard of 1) termini’s and 2) Isgro.
We stopped by Sunday for Ricotta Cake and it was outstanding. Someone complained that it was burnt-not so! The top was golden brown and carmelized, exactly as it should be. The Easter Bread was good too (mine is better :). The staff was friendly and accomodating. Can;t ask for more during a pandemic or anytime!
While walking around I desperately wanted coffee and was intrigued when I saw Varallo’s sign saying it has the best cannoli in South Philly so I decided to stop in. I ordered a cappuccino which was outstanding. The foam was so fluffy and the espresso packed strong flavor. It was by far one of the best cappuccinos I have ever had. While I was there I decided to try the regular cannoli which turned out to be a great decision. The cannoli shell is so fresh and crisp and the cream is a beautiful consistency. The chocolate pieces add just the right hint of chocolate and sweetness. The cannoli was a wonderful treat!! The staff working there were very sweet. A great place and one I will definitely return to soon.
When we first walked in we didnt really see anyone because it was quite dark, but we greeted and accompanied by the friendly staff through our visit. The bakery has a variety of gelatos and sweets. Its fairly priced and pretty delicious. We went for the BaBa Rum gelato and it was $2 per scoop.
My favorite Italian bakery. Best quality ingredients.
I ordered 3 dozen large vanilla cupcakes with butter cream icing for a baby shower. I received so many compliments on these cupcakes. The butter cream was perfect! 5 out of 5 Stars!
Excellent place! Been coming here for 25 years!
Incredible, and the lady working was lovely. she made the gelato from fruit and herbs from her garden. lovely
I wanted Nonna home with me! I ate donut before I turned my car on, and made sure my 3 boxes were secured in the seat belt next to me! We will be back for sure!
Was no at all impressed with anything I bought. The cakes were dry, pistachio cannolis were utterly tasteless, the strawberry shortcake has a weird taste to it.. Very disappointed
Italian bakery with delicious cakes, cookies, pastries, gelato and coffee. Without a doubt, some of my favorite desserts can be found at Varallos bakery. Their ricotta cannolis, their apple fritters, their cheesecake, their sfogliatella, and their chocolate ring cake are all so very good. That was just a short list of my favorites. There are so many more desserts to choose from. They also have pizza and the best croissants. Rosa and family are the nicest, warmest people. This is definitely a bakery you will want to visit. I had to add this. Today, I had the best zeppole. Its like a giant cream puff and it is filled with ricotta cheese filling or custard. Of course, I chose the ricotta cheese filled because thats my favorite. I would highly recommend either one because it is seasonal and so very good.6/8...picked up a chocolate fudge cake for my brothers birthday...rich, decadent, delicious!
The freshest pastries kind and courteous beautiful people God bless
Great local bakery that makes ALL the things and has good hours -- cake, cookies, pastries! I have only tried one thing (a salted caramel cake) but it was rich and flavorful and well made. Will definitely be back to try more items.
Old school bakery 5 stars
The best Italian bakery!
Old school Italian bakery....Has hard to find items. ..Best Italian pastries!
I bought an Italian cream cake. It was so delicious. It was fresh and not the sugary frosting. The cake was moist but not overly taste of rum.
1 st time here, the Italian Rum cake was great ! The cannoli as well ! Deff worth the drive from New Jersey!
I love old school Italian pastry shops! I am not a fan of cannolis but I bought an assortment of small cookies and the rum cake with a coffee. The coffee didn’t rock my socks but the pastries were freakin delicious and oh so fresh! This place gets 5 starts from me though because of the customer service. It can be overwhelming trying to choose something and the young woman with the cool hairdo was super patient with us and was extremely helpful. It was such a great and affordable experience even though we were in and out!P.S Try their Amaretti cookies!!!!!
Varallos has very good cinnamon buns with the rasins and the peanuts.
If there is ever a family event on the weekend, believe I am walking In to Varallo Bros.
My favorite place every Friday to have my favorite pea-can cake
Certainly worth going back to. The prices are fair for the quality of food.
This place is absolutely outstanding. The staff was friendly and observant. The bill was fair.
The atmosphere, the food, the lady who helped me were all amazing!!! If you want an authentic Italian experience come here!!!
Everything was terrible the shortcake tasted like chemicals the cannolis horrible
Good desserts for a sweet tooth
Best baked goods, but most importantly best hospitality and friendliness ever. 10/10 would recommend 24/7
It was so fresh. It has a great atmosphere.

Best cookies in tristate area!
Disappointed. Didnt meet my expectations. Overpriced too.
They have so many great reviews for a reason.

Super place to meet and chat with coworkers. Really nothing but good experiences here. The bill was average for the menu.
Everything Ive ever had here is delicious! Better than Terminis. Prices are good, too!
Old fashioned Italian Bakery with the best selection of Italian cakes cookies and pastries.I even found the old fashioned Italian Easter eggs there! The taste and atmosphere brings me right back to my Grandparents kitchen every time. I love it here and I love the taste of everything

Thank you so much Varallo ....cake turned out great. Thank you so much. See soon
This bakery was amazing!!! Was visiting from Wichita- heard it was the best cannoli in south philly, it definitely was! Staff was so nice and accommodating. Would highly recommend!
The Baba Rum is delicious! Excellent, fresh Italian pastries, cookies and cakes. Homemade gelato and Italian soda. You can enjoy coffee or tea with your dessert, while sitting at the tables and chairs (inside or out). A wonderful, authentic Italian bakery.
Best Varallo Brothers Bakery! Especially the chocolaty one. The nice lady behind the counter was blessed by the pope!
Best cannoli Ive ever eaten, including from little Italy in Soho! A nice clean place and very friendly! There is an abundance of beautiful, fresh baked goods to look at. The gelato wasnt the greatest, but still good! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic and delicious Italian bakery in Philadelphia!
So disappointed with 4 orders of 11 dollar dry burnt Ricotta cake .. 1 bite I had to throw it in the trash. ... Really not even edible ..Lost a good Customer
A really authentic Italian pastry shop that is reasonably priced. The cakes taste better than they look. The quality is not always consistent but its usually very good. I recommend trying this place out, you may feel that youre back in Italy!
I Felt so welcomed there! Truly a beautiful bakery. I will be returning! (Try their hazelnut ice cream )
The Varallo Brothers and Sons know how to BAKE! And early Sunday mornings I like to wake and bake and satisfy my munchies with the most amazing coconut custard pie topped with fresh whipped coconut cream, Bernie Varallos Specialty. UNBELIEVABLY DELICIOUS!!! 😊😋
We stopped here to pick up a cake for a party, if you are looking for pastries there is a huge selection! The staff is super friendly & patient. Will return on our next trip to Philly. Thank you!
Can’t rave enough about this place. Hubby and I can’t go there enough. We get two pastries a piece and a red pie. We have never been disappointed!
Amazing cake even when I had to ask for it last minute and treat service
This is the best Italian bakery ever. Ive been around a long time and tried them all, and they are the best! My brother says they are the best too, and when he visits from Virginia, he stops to load up for the return to Virginia.
Amazing neighborhood bakery full of delicious treats and robust coffee. Take a friend and sit at one of the tables for two for the best conversation and desserts.
We always order our cakes from Varallo Brothers. Everything is always so delicious. Sometimes I just stop in for some cookies while on the way home from work.

My family have been getting our cakes from here for decades. The best everything here
Great donuts!!!! LFF.
Pleasing atmosphere good service. But there should be 2 lines 1 for pre ordered pickups and one for people walking in
Great coffee they have a great attitude towards customers nice place to sit down drinking your coffee or Capuano or just eat your pastries............

This place is another joke in the heart of South Philly cash only business completely understandable go to use their ATM to get cash and it’s temporarily out of service owner has no idea that it’s not working so I can only pay you through an app like Apple Pay etc. Then, And proceeds to tell me I’m rude because their equipment doesn’t work and they only except cash what a f***ing joke property value goes up and everybody thinks their all of a sudden entitled shaking my head will not return!!!!
Nice neighborhood shop for pastries. Highly recommended.
Been going there since 1995 ...absolute best italian cookies and services...check it out you will get hooked .
I love u guys!!! The cannolli is the best. I travel all the way from north philly 4 it!!♥♥:)
Outstanding thats all that is needed to say.
I love this place the coffee the pastries all very good.
Amazing pastries! super friendly staff!
They always have the best of everything there and appreciate your business.
Great pastries
I enjoy the fresh donut and the family business.
Delicious cannolis.
Food and service was horrible real South Philly attitude and very unwelcoming when you come in the store
Awesome. ..I mean awesome desserts. Cheap pricing too.
If you want cannoli the way it is done in Italy(with dried candied fruit) this is where to get it. I prefer without the fruit, but its still good.
Cake is good but very pricey
Phenomenal
