What a great place to hang and chill with friends. Great board game selection. They offer vegan options, highly recommend the vegan butter beer. The food was tasty. Parking is a bit limited, I recommend making a reservation if coming with a big group as the indoor seating is limited.
My wife and I had not yet played our daily game of chess when we came across this bar and had to stop. The outdoor patio area is spacious and a large area is also covered. Inside they have some really great dining spaces to spend time with friends. It does cost $7/person to have access to the game library.
Fun place! The selection of games is great, and the food is good as well. However, the cocktails while board gaming are what really won me over. Truly a great place if you are looking for a fun evening.
This place is a Blast!!! So many games to choose from. Its great to run through a bunch of old classics, or to try a new game before you buy it. When we asked for a particular game they didnt have, they actually went next door to their game shop and opened a brand new game for us! The service really is top notch. And the food! So many amazing comfort food options, and with a huge vegan and gluten free selection too. The drinks are fantastic as well. Its a bit pricey but the fun is worth it and so we keep going back again and again
Top notch game selection with a equally exceptional food and drink selection. Come try a new game while dining and then visit their store a few doors down.
A boardgame cafe & bar is a million dollar idea. Enjoy a 1200+ game selection accompanied with great vegetarian/vegan food and a truly impressive cocktail ensemble. Compared to nearby restaurant bars, the cocktails here are an absolute must. Clever, complex, and thought-provoking.... Exactly the mindset needed to compete in the boardgame of your choice.
Great service and friendly staff! Will definitely come again!
Had a nice outdoor seating area, but once or twice I think we were forgotten about outside. When we were seated the staff member let us know that they were short staffed, so they asked for our patience. I am glad they warned us, but it did take about 30 minutes from when our last dishes were cleared until we received the check. (we were not playing any games, but just waiting). I was pleased with the vegan menu and hopefully we will be back again sometime and get to play some games. (also did not realize before going that there is an additional $7 fee to play games)
Great service, great place! We need up just playing Monopoly (Zelda). Such an overwhelming selection! Vegan food and mocktails are a great choice for anyone!
Amazing boardgame Cafe. Cuisine was vegetarian/vegan and the vibe was extremely cool and welcoming. They have a ton of board games to try for all levels of experience with a board game master to help get you started and to offer suggestions. Food was delicious and service was 10/10. They also have a good selection of board games to try, 10% off with any food/beverage purchase. If youre looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon or to test drive some board games youve been eyeing, then I highly recommend!
Such a fun place! The drinks are good and have such fun fandom themed names. They have TONS of games and game masters to help teach you the game or to help figure out the game with you. We played Ticket to Ride which is a gamr Ive owned forever but never had a chance to learn on my own time. I recommend this place for anyone who loves board games!
The food is really good. The person who welcomes people had a real attitude. Apparently they want people to wear masks as you walk to the table or walk around. Which Im iffy, because I already had the shots. Anyway, I did not have one. They offered masks (which was nice) but they were kids sizes per the welcome person. I said ok do you want me to hold the mask to my face thinking it was too small for my big head. And he said in a snarky way No, I want you to wear it. The attitude was a put down and probably not coming back. Since his skull was probably not as big as mine, he probably has not had 10s of those small masks break as I put them on my head, which is frustrating. Again the food is good, but maybe not so much for picky kids eaters. Too bad about the attitude, but they probably get mask issues all the time.
This place is THE best! Ed, Jeanne, Manny, Mandy, Mickie and Gabby are awesome! And thats just the staff whose names I got. They are all great! The location is warm and welcoming. The selection of games to play and for sale is staggering. The staff are very knowledgeable about the games being played and are more than happy to come and teach and assist you. By the way, they sell teas that are fantastic! Made locally, it was the perfect beverage for board gaming on a December night. They serve vegetarian fare and have a liquor license as well. They have or host events several times a week. If you are in the Philly area and board games are your thing then you definitely need to check out the Queen & Rook Game Cafe!
I cant wait to go back! The employees were so kind and knowledgeable. The drinks and food were so good. We had a great night here while the storms passed through the city.
With “cafe” in the name, and a whole section of the menu dedicated to coffee, I assumed it was safe to order an americano. It took the staff about 20 minutes to make my drink, which was full of grounds, as if someone had never operated a coffee machine before, basically cowboy coffee 😆 it’s almost impossible to mess up an americano, but this was comically undrinkable. I immediately asked for a refund and will never go back for anything else.
This place is just rad. The vegan food is killer. Really appreciated that they offered mocktails and cocktails. The board game selection is unreal. Everything from nostalgic games to pop culture to rpg to collaborative deck building etc. The staff are lovely. Will absolutely be back.
Great service and great selection of games! The staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. Ive been here twice already and Ive thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance, the food (of which theres a great selection of vegan and gluten free options), and the games available. I highly recommend checking it out. Its an awesome and accepting space that I will definitely be going back too.
Loved this place! This is the first place we (group of 4) have eaten out at during covid-19. they have nice outdoor seating too. Even though it was cold outside, we were warm because of the heaters. Everyone there was helpful and kept checking in on us. We also got a lot of knowledge on games! We had vegan Parmesan fries, mozzarella sticks, fried cauliflower, and mac and cheese which were delicious. The vegan vietnamese coffee was so so good. They had a food & games option too which we’ll definitely try next time. :)
They have a great game selection, and they food and drinks were shockingly good! Im usually skeptic that faux meat is going to have a weird texture, but the wings had an amazing crunch and felt like the real thing! Same with the Harry Potter themed cocktails. I was worried they might be overly sweet, but they were actually really delicious and pretty!
This place is incredible!!!! We stumbled upon this cafe while visiting Philly in March for a birthday and our family just loved the time spent here. We wound up just getting drinks and playing at the bar. The walls are lined with every board game in the universe (for playing and to buy!). Staff had a great sense of hospitality and suggested a wonderful game that everyone enjoyed... so much so that we wound up buying the game. This place would be great for a rainy day or a few hours of relaxed fun. Couldnt recommend it enough! Thanks for making our day in Philly wonderful and memorable Queen & Rook Game Cafe!!
Great staff and welcoming vibe. Greeted me promptly, Im used to restaurant staff ignoring me and acting like I shouldnt be there. To top it off great vegan food.
Huge selection of games. Staff knowledgeable about many different styles of games. The food is good too. Highly recommend
Tried a Beyond Burger for the first time, and it fooled me and my husband. It was SO GOOD! For two people, I recommend playing Cat Lady and Onitama :) We had a great time and will be back!
My girlfriend and I decided to go here for her birthday after a friend of hers recommended the place. We had reservations at 5:30 and were seated as soon as we got there. We had sooo much fun playing and trying out the board games and the staff was helpful in recommending games. The dude game made us laugh a lot! The food was delicious and they answered all my questions about the menu as well. the fries with the vegan ranch was phenomenal. It was such a wonderful experience and I am recommending this to many friends. If you are looking for a fun date night or a night with friends then go here! Also their bathrooms were all gender which I think is really awesome. They had great covid measures in place as well, felt very clean and safe. We will be back!!
A lovely little cafe with a fantastic business model that helps make board games accessible and enjoyable. With a vegan focused - allergen conscientious menu, gender neutral bathrooms, and a strong awareness for covid protocols, this spot seemed to astound. I was looking forward to becoming a long time patron.Unfortunately, my experience tonight changed that as I experienced the worst wait service I have ever experienced. The waitress seemed to completely ignore our table for the majority of the three and a half hours we spent there. I note the time, not because we intended to be there that long, but because her service to our table was so sporadic that it extended our stay well past when we wanted to leave. Out of those three and a half hours spent there, our waitress came to our table twice without us having to flag her down first, and even when flagging her down, it would take 15-30 minutes for simple requests like a refill or to ask about a game (a refill on paid beverages, forget about water, that was completely ignored). And the place was busy enough, but not swamped. Our table had the misfortune of being able to see into the kitchen where we would watch our waitress sit, 10 - 15 minutes at a time, so they were far from overworked. In the 30 minutes it took for us to get the check from when we first asked (and we only ended up getting the check by asking the bartender directly), I would estimate 15-20 minutes of that time our waitress spent sitting in the back.Even with all of this, I am easy to forgive waitstaff. I understand the difficulty of being in the service industry. I understand that her knee was hurt and she needed to ice it. I understand she was the only waitress between 7 tables. I understand you could be tired and need to sit (although we were there as soon as the store opened). But there was no cordiality, no consideration, no awareness, no apology, no explanation. A single one of these bare minimum soft skills applied and I wouldnt be writing this review. It is a crying shame that this wonderful cafe is so poorly represented by this one particular waitress. Ill also note that we were catered to when we first arrived by (I believe) the owner and the assistant manager between our two separate visits, both of whom were nothing but exceptionally helpful and cordial as we perused the retail side of the business. But until the waitstaff is either held more accountable or outright replaced, I urge everyone to stay away lest your 2 hour visit becomes a 4 hour visit.
Came here for lunch with our 2 yo! Edward, we loved our time there! You are a great owner and dedicated to the business! My kid loved playing jenga, and it kept her occupied while we ate! The food was amazing and the atmosphere is so laid back and inviting. We will be back!! Highly recommend.
Great food and the friendliest staff. The staff really know their board games and you can tell they just love their work. It made the whole experience that much more fun!
I loved it there. The employees there was so nice Especially Misha. I would go there again. I would recommend (10/10).
Great board game selection, staff is nice and helpful, & their store to purchase games has an amazing variety of games. Always recommend to friends in the city and those who visit.
It was a quaint little place. I liked it very much and the vegan chicken fingers was a pleasant surprise.
Great selection of games, fun drinks, and wonderfully friendly servers, if youre a board gamer you cant go wrong here.
Great food, but you have to pay $7 per person to use any of the board games
We made a reservation & had to wait 10 mins to be seated, we were placed at half a table which I found strange given that every other party had wider tables given the nature of the restaurant including board games. We saw an empty booth & assumed it was being saved for a larger group however a party of 2 (like us) were seated there after. We selected a game and quickly realized the table wasn’t large enough to accommodate it along with our food so switched it for a simple card game. We were told at the beginning of our meal that playing a game there would be a 7$ fee, however we were charged 2x for switching games. The waiter was barely present. The food, specifically Mac & cheese was the quality of boxed kraft- mushy & flavorless.
Had a great experience playing games outside. It was my first time at a place like this. The only problem was the tables outside were slatted and our cards kept falling through.
I did not know that meat was vegan until they told me. Thats amazing. Tasted like a real chargrilled Burger! 😁
Great vegan food and endless collection of games!
A gameboard hangout and a restaurant? Someone pinch me. This is literally the perfect setting for anything.
Nice selection. No chess club though.
This shop rocks! Everyone is super helpful and knowledgeable and if they dont know something they will find out for you. Recently came across some hard to find TCG products at their store that most LGSs have been marking up considerably. I was floored by how reasonable their prices on these products were at Q&R! Youve made a loyal customer guys, keep it up!
Decent food, nice games, good atmosphere.
This is an amazingly cool concept and would be a great night out for a date or a small group of 3-4 friends. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and generous with their time. The rooms were clean, attractive, and offer some unique seating. The atmosphere was fully inclusive. There were a TON of games to play (and buy), new and old, large and small, simple and complex. The rosemary parmesan fries were very good, and the pretzel dippers were sizeable and fresh. The custom drinks looked fun (we didnt indulge) and worthy of the themed names (order the Phoenix Feather for a fun example!)5 stars because it is clearly a standout restaurant for the right clientele. What we failed to notice from some quick research on the website was, first, the food is all vegan. We gave some food a try anyway, but found we are not fans of non-dairy cheese whiz and the Seitan Wings must be an acquired taste. They were not wing-like in shape, form, or texture, although I suspect actual vegans would be prepared for the experience. Second, the website failed to make it clear that playing games requires $7 per adult which feels a little pricy for a larger group considering you only get 2 hours (website says 3 hours, but the staff said 2 hours unless they arent busy). It says this price on the website, but under gallery (where we would expect photos) and not under about“ or on the menu page. The good news is you do not need to play any games to eat. Will likely not be back, but only because of our particular tastes.
Queen & Rook took the board game experience to a whole other level! The staff was great, especially our gamekeeper who explained Forbidden Island to us so clearly and made our playing experience super enjoyable. The food was great—plenty of vegan options with vegan dairy products that my partner could enjoy. Also was super impressed at their social awareness; staff had pronouns listed on their nametags, bathrooms were gender neutral, and they had game offerings from local BIPOC game creators. We will be back!
Nice place with an incredible selection of games!
Went here on a date and it was a fantastic time. Their vegan food was incredible and the drinks were very tasty. Wesley was a great and entertaining server and helped us pick out the ideal board game which did not disappoint. Everyone needs to check this place out!!
Awesome experience, they are super welcoming and helpful! They have people who recommend games and help teach you how to play. My fiance and I had a great time and learned a couple new games we might even buy for ourselves. My only complaint (not really a complaint) is the menu has just vegetarian and vegan options. I highly recommend to any interested. Welcome to the neighborhood Queen and Rook!
Super fun place. A ton of food options and drinks from local vendors. Friendly staff. Cant wait to get back!
So fun. Great vegan food, awesome drink selection, and friendly staff. My only complaint is that playing the games is wayyyy too expensive!
Good selection of games. Great food Ave bev
Well the food and drinks arent particularly good but I like the mission. The atmosphere and the staff are nice. I had a good time there.
I love this place! It has a good location, creative menu, and it is a fairly unique business. There is a similar place in Woodbury, NJ, but they are easily distinguishable businesses. There are game experts there who will patiently explain how to play a game and also make recommendations. My sole complaint is the spottiness of the servers. Having visited more than a handful of times, waiters can be inattentive at times and sullen at others.
Nice place to eat and chill with friends
The staff was extremely helpful and transparent - after informing them of my food allergies, they double-checked just about every menu item for me! The food was delicious - we will be ordering from here on a regular basis!
Im a meat lover as much as anyone can be, but omg is the food here incredible. If all the vegetarian food I ate tasted as good as the food here I probably wouldnt eat meat again, haha.Aside from the food, the staff is incredibly kind and helpful. They have so many board games to choose from. In addition, they put so much effort into outdoor dining and gaming in these trying times. They worked so hard with these plastic dividers and well spread out tables. If you want some awesome food or you just want to play some board games definitely check this place out.
Had the cauliflower vegan buffalo wings and the vegan parm rosemary fries and all i can say is wow!!! i live around 10 blocks away, placed an order through caviar and it was at my house in less than 30 minutes. i’ll definitely be ordering from here again!! really impressed
Came in on my birthday. Ordered tea with lemon, brought w/o lemon and the server disappeared for 20 minutes until my food came out. Burger described as having dijon and golden came out with mayo and grilled onion, on a super burned bun. This was after the greeter/server seemed really annoyed that I had showed up to begin with, and seating that was extremely uncomfortable...I just got up and left without eating anything.Total disaster, will never return.
Great little game shop and Cafe. Very knowledgeable about the inventory and well stocked. Can purchase online and pickup. Did not try out the food, but the menu looks tempting. Will be back.
Grateful for Queen and Rook and their game selections! Got the latest version of Unlock! and although it was at times a challenge it was a great time racing the clock to solve the puzzles and complete the missions! Similar to an escape room, it was a blast solo and with friends! Thanks for the suggestion guys!!Dan B
I’ve been searching everywhere for a Kickstarter game, Blood Rage, that’s at least 6 years old with no luck. As a last resort I searched FB marketplace, I’m located in Michigan but this place popped up! Their website said they had it!! They were able to assist me over the phone, pay for it and have it shipped to me. Edward even offered it to be gift wrapped. I might just have to take a trip to Pennsylvania just to check them out in person.
Shout out to Queen & Rook for solving my quarantine boredom! You the real MVPs!! My boyfriend & I got UNLOCK! Mystery Adventures recently and we loved it. If you’re even mildly competitive this is the game for you. The two of us played together but I could see this being fun with a group of friends, which is totally happening once this is all over! Thanks again guys! Also! JUST completed The Harley Quinn puzzle we got! Very cool!
Whats not to like? Its a gaming Cafe and bar! Theres lots of food for vegans and vegetarians which Im grateful for. The food was good, although it was a little too salty. Your selection was good and coming from me, that is high praise. Ill definitely be back!
So cute, I could spend hours (and a lot of money) here on great toys and games!
The food is delicious and so many vegan options! The portion sizes are a little smaller than Id like but the prices are still fair and staff are knowledge, accommodating, friendly, and personable. They have a huge selection of great board games and staff to recommend stuff based on how many people in your group and the kind of game you feel like playing. Every recommendation Ive gotten from them has been a winner, and theyre so nice when we come to play D&D!!
Wonderful, warm experience!
Amazing place, amazing staff, great selection of games.
Our family loves Queen & Rook Game Cafe. They have a huge game library and their employees have excellent game knowledge. We told them the types of games we like and they suggested new games that we loved. We even bought one of the games. The food is also great, which I didnt expect from a game cafe. Its a great environment for adults and kids. My wife and I, our ten year old and teen family members have had a fantastic time there. They staff is also incredibly nice.
Its such a great opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful company with Queen and Rook. The owners and staff are amazing as our the customers. To be in a space with such like minded folks that share a love of gaming gives me a fulfilling sense of belonging and makes me happy to come to work everyday. My Mum and sister love coming here to spend time together and continue their on going competition with each other playing Exploding Potions over our Salvadorian Sea Fry tacos and drinks.
A truly fun experience. I went there for a birthday party, and thats an excellent reason to go!They have a truly superb library of tabletop games, along with honest and helpful game experts whose entire job is to help you navigate their hundreds upon hundreds of selections. The wide selection and thoughtful expert advise means that there was plenty to enjoy for everyone in our group, from those who almost never play games to longtime strategy gamers. They also have some delicious food with a good choice of vegetarian and vegan options (as well as gluten-free). The beer list isnt huge, but its fine, and their choice to focus primarily on local brews is a nice idea. They also have a surprising number of wine and hard seltzer options, as well as soft drinks. That said, if youre going here, youre going to play games. There is a $7-per-person-per-3-hours surcharge to cover the gaming, and the food is definitely intended as snacks rather than meals. The food is also quite pricey given the portion size and quantity – this is NOT a good place either to fill up your belly or to enjoy fine dining. You can find more diverse and interesting drinks menus at almost any other bar in the area. Thats not to say that you shouldnt go here – you should! Just make sure that youre going for the games and the atmosphere, that youre prepared to spend a decent amount of time & money, and that the food & drinks are a nice bonus for you rather than the main draw. If you go in with that attitude, this place is a solid 5/5. If youre looking for a quick drink and maybe a game to pass the time, then you can get that here, but youre definitely not getting full value.
Weve been meaning to come here and get a meal and play games for ages, but we have three young kids, so we havent managed it! Weve only taken games to go and never tried the food. Then the pandemic hit so we decided to order food in. And it was all so good! Why did we wait for so long?! Heartily recommended. Well be ordering again and, once this is all over, dining in.
WOW!! Great selection of food, good padding for sitting in a chair for 3 hours, and such friendly/welcoming staff. I went by myself to play one of my favorite games and every single staff member stopped by my table to say hello or talk with me about my game. I definitely found my new go to board game cafe!!
Visited for the first time trying two small plates and two medium plates. The buffalo cauliflower and jackfruit tacos were delicious!!! Everyone was kind and pleasant. The idea behind having a restaurant with games is awesome. I cant wait to visit with my kids! New go-to Vegan spot 💚
Been there 3 times, once with a large group of 30+ people and twice with a small gathering of friends. Every time Ive come away impressed by the quality of food and friendliness of staff. Awesome time whether or not youre a board game nerd. :)
This place is fantastic! They have a huge library of games and their staff are so friendly. We went early on a Saturday night and they werent too terribly busy.
Rough start, but a great end. When we first entered the cafe for our reservation, our table wasnt ready and it was quite loud and noticably warm in there. After we were finally seated, we were greeted by our absolutely outstanding board game sommelier, Wesley. Our story would not have ended so well if it wasnt for him. Unfortunately, there was an overly exuberant group of guys who wouldnt stop yelling in celebration over their game. I understand excitement, but these guys were so loud, I couldnt hear my wife who was sitting across from me. The table location was also quite crowded, so with that, the heat and the noise, it was not going well at all. Luckily, we had an expert customer service member in Wesley. He found another table for us, somehow got that group of fools to be quiet and found the perfect board game selection for our interests. We will definitely be returning, thanks to him and his willingness to go above and beyond. Thank you for saying as you wish Wesley.
Great food (all vegetarian, lots of gluten free and vegan options). Nice atmosphere. Max, our server, was attentive and made sure our table was well taken care of.
Cool games and decor. kinda small and gets crowded fast. also I think I got drugged here but that may have been an accident. would come here on a quieter day
Very nice and welcoming, staff are still finding their groove, but overall Id come back. Spent 2 hrs here with my 2 children and they were totally hooked! Definitely coming back! A little disappointed on no dipping cheese for their cheese fries...but theyll live...
My boyfriend and I have been anticipating the opening of Queen and Rook for months and it exceeded our expectations. Amazing staff, game selection, drinks, food and coffee. Come and say hi because we’ll probably be there at least once a week.
Delightful. Were fortunate to have it. Staff are extremely friendly. I havent tried much on the menu yet but everything so far was good.
They have many games including a lot of hard to find retro games. I also love that they have vegan/plant based menu items. The staff are friendly and excited to help with the games.
Great food! Try the Korean tacos. Awesome selection of games. They have some rare classics, most new releases, and all of the standards.
Super friendly staff and good food
Legendary Philly game bar. Great food, drinks, and the top “game sommeliers” in America. You am cannot lose, unless I’m there in which case you’ll probably lose but that’s the fun.
Super chill. Knowledgable and friendly staff. Working here is fun. So many games youd never have to play the same one twice.
The food is so bad
This place is great for games and snacks. Really helpful staff the will help select games for you. And the mozerella sticks are super yummy.
This place is great! Board Game nerds dream! Good drinks, a lot selection of games and friendly folks. Wish this was my local bar.
I never thought Id like a meatless burger, faux-meat tacos or vegan nachos with a board game, but I have to admit its a great pairing...the awesome beer selection helped. And I say this as an employee! Compliments to the amazing chefs and bartenders!
Awesome new game cafe with a full bar and food menu. The food menu has lots of vegan and gluten free options. Great place, very friendly staff!
This place is incredible. Fantastic vegetarian and vegan food. An awesome board game selection and everyone in the place is willing to teach you/guide you through games.
We had so much fun. Spent 3 hours here easily. Great selection of both games and food.
Great spot to play some games with the family and kids or to go have a drink and play with friends. Lovely staff and owner as well.
The staff here is so incredibly nice and helpful. Great game selection. Highly recommend.
Its pretty nice
Always a good time. The food is excellent and the game selection is awesome. I love the vintage games on display in the back
