They sell old and spoiled tuna in their sashimi section. I bought a piece of tuna and it turns out the backside of the tuna is brown and smells very fishy. Unspoiled sashimi should not have a fishy smell! I am very disappointed that they are selling clearly spoiled goods at price similar to whole foods / H-mart.
The rudest store employees. I asked one question because I couldn’t find something and I was yelled at and told to use my eyes.It took everything in me to not cry immediately in the store. There are much better stores in the strip district who are actually nice and helpful. Please go there instead.
This store is amazing. They stock a lot of items we havent been able to find at other stores. All the people working in the store are so incredibly kind, too. Were always greeted cheerfully.
I forgot to wear my mask before entering the store. The female owner gave me options to buy mask from their store or I can go to back my car and wear mask. I think this is fine. But the male owner was rude, he told me “get out of here”. Oh my goodness, this is the first time heard such of words in a store
The selection and variety of imported products has always been good here, from harder-to-find specialties to seasonal foods, and most of the shelves are marked with translations of what each product type is in case you do not know Japanese. A nice touch is that items that are a Product of Japan are clearly marked on the shelf itself in case you are specifically looking for this. The store is only run by a single couple so I recommend you do research into what you are looking for ahead of time, as at busier times they are not able to answer many questions. With that said, they have always been friendly and helpful when they do.
Super cute shop with fresh produce and various fish and other hard-to-find Japanese groceries. Staff is helpful and polite. Looking forward to visiting again!
Excellent Japanese food in intimate surroundings. Love this place! Delicious bentos for sale
Genuine Japanese grocery store with authentic Japanese food and sundry items. Friendly service. Small store but good selection. Prices moderate. Limited parking...go early. Open at 10 am.
This small and locally owned grocery is a wonderful gem within the Shadyside neighborhood and is sure to have your Japanese specialty items (and some other, general Asian items). The owners are very kind and more than willing to help you find items or answer questions - they knew right away we were going to make okonomiyaki and gave great advice on proper preparation for the kombu! Cant wait to be back and continue trying new dishes, thanks Toyko Japanese Food Store!!
A cute little place. I come here with my friend whenever we are in the area.
Very good and cute, they have a lot of different things including both ingredients to make meals at home and prepared meals (bento) and snacks you can eat right away. I like that they dont slack on covid measures.
Lovely mom and pop style store that has absolutely saved me after moving to Pitt by providing specific cooking ingredients not widely available at supermarkets.
Maybe it is me, but on two occasions the older female owner was short with me and acted like I was a bother when I asked her questions but would make a 180 and had smiles and great customer service for other customers entering the store. I did not return as I got the feeling I was not wanted in there. I was never rude to her. After my experience and reading the reviews I think she may have a problem with people of color. Her husband was the same... dismissive but not as blatant as his wife.
A compact store that has all the basic Japanese stuff. Dont expect 100 kinds of shoyu but enough to power a ramen hobbyist
Bento boxes are delicious.
Its a nice little convenience store. The name definitely makes it sound bigger, like Lotus in the Strip District. Its a quaint little place but definitely has convenience store vibes.
Who I would presume to be the owner based on previous reviews (older white haired woman), was ill-mannered and unpleasant. The sign on the entrance states the store has a max capacity of 5 individuals. I was waiting outside with my eight year old daughter waiting for others to exit as there was 4 people presently in the store. One person exited, my daughter and I tried to enter. We were told there were to many people and we still had to wait. A second individual exits the store, now leaving two customers and the clerk inside. We again tried to enter, and I was told only one at a time, and that my eight year old daughter had to wait outside. We left and went to our usual spot, Sambok Korean Groceries in the Strip District. Which has much nicer owners nonetheless.
I love and know Japan and Japanese culture very well! But owner and staff of this store were always nervous towards the customers. I was there several time. And today decided no more shopping in that store. Panda is much more better for me.
Great place for authentic Japanese products as well as kimchi and other nations foods. Very nice and polite people run the store
Nice selection, lovely little store. I appreciate that they take precautions showing they care about the health and safety of customers as well as employees/owners. Lots of imported food items you cant find anywhere else.
The rudest store I have ever visited in the city. Customers beware of not touching and moving the items. The owners will blame you for anything that accidentally happens. The owners are really controlling and monitoring all your moves. Items are not diverse too.
The bentos in the back are great
Pretty good selection here. very fair pricing.
Masks are used, they provide gloves and shopping bags. Very friendly and welcoming.
Finally made it here today after admiring all the cute pics of snacks ramen and candy. Store is smaller than i thought but still a very good store with variety. Owners doing great following Covid mandates. Must wear a mask and Only 2 person per family allowed in the store. You may need to wait outside for a few minutes for other customers to come out as there can only be a small number of shoppers at a time.We didn’t wait long and the owners provide gloves for you to wear while you shop. All the Covid updates out of the way, now onto the merchandise. There’s a great selection of Japanese foods. Even fresh produce. Snacks, ramen, candy, drinks. A nice frozen section with seafood. The authentic Japanese ceramic dishes, sake cups are lovely but expensive.Owners are very nice and the gentleman joked with us and our experience was very nice. Will come back again
Cool little store. Im learning how to cook traditional Japanese dishes, and this place is great for ingredients needed in recipes. The staff was really nice. I didnt feel rushed, unwelcome, or awkward during my visit. Also they have a great selection on instant ramen! Will definitely be returning when its time to get ingredients for a recipe, or more ramen noodles(which ever comes first). This store is very far from me but its worth the trip!
Small store, but welcoming. Owner was very nice and helpful. Prices were very fair. I will definitely be going back in the future.
Some items are pricier. They do NOT accept Food Stamps. You will need a credit/debit card to purchase their items and it’s a $10 minimum which means you need to spend up to $10 in their store. The japanese old man that is there is hella annoying, he likes to tell you what to do and how to do things with the items you’re holding as if it’s bothering him but he never once asks if he can help me with anything. The lady is nice... but I may have to start spending my money somewhere else.Respect me since i’m a paying customer or I won’t bring my money into this store again.
Great products, poor service.
Hard to find specialized Asian stores, especially Japanese in area, so this was a nice surprise. Very sweet couple run it, will be back. I am used to having a ton of Japanese stores like this around where I am from (Seattle) so its nice to have at least one nearby I can go to since I cook a lot of authentic style Asian foods at home, and the ingredients are hard to find.
Limiting description to Japanese food & ingredients: this place has a variety of those, although at a higher price than the other East Asian markets in Pittsburgh. Its a good option when youre not sure if you can find something specific to Japan cuisine elsewhere, but if youre sure its not something that specific, other markets in Pittsburgh would do nearly as well, with a lower price.
Good Japanese imports. Lots of small plates I was looking for too instead of having to buy on amazon. The meats and fish are a bit pricey but it’s chopped in house and kept sanitary. All the snacks and assorted instant ramen I missed from Japan could be found. Highly recommended. Wish there was more stores like this closer to home.
This has become one of my favorite local markets. The prices are great and the women working behind the counter is a sweetheart. This is a smaller store but they have a good selection for the size of the place.
This place rules. They have a huge variety and have never made fun of me for buying snacks and milk tea in bulk.
I visit whenever I go to the laundromat, I believe it is owned by a very nice couple. The food is always very fresh and yummy. This store gives you a wonderful opportunity to try new things as well as most items have a small portion in English for instructions.
I was a customary customer but I not coming anymore.I don’t know why owner lives in America if he doesn’t like this here. He asked once: “why did you left Japan if is much better than here?” But the reason I’m very disappointed is because I always tried to be very polite when coming to this store. I was wearing mask and waiting outside hanging plastic gloves without touching anything. However he still came from the kitchen came outside screaming: “you cannot touch anything in this store with this gloves!!” I said: “yes, I know” and he kept repeating that over and over again as if I was deaf. There’s no reason at all for he being so stupid and rude because I wasn’t touching anything and I was just waiting from outside. I’m very disappointed with such rude attitude.
Great variety of foods and kitchenware. Sushi on weekends.
She was just not nice to customers. There were not so many things to buy. Just a small store to drop by.
Great place. You can find many popular and common asian grocery goods. Be careful with their pre made lunch boxes. Got one and ate it later that day but it had already turned foul.
I have been going to this store since 1985. Great selection and quality. The owners changed from 1985 but not quality. Great bento boxes and sushi if you can get it.
I love this place. I went for the first time since I am new to the area and it’s nice to see brands that I use on A daily basis. This will be a store that I will exclusively shop at for my Japanese food.
Such a gem for Japanese cooking essentials and more. They pack a lot into this small store, and the owners are super friendly.
The folks who own and run the place are extremely nice. Theyve both given me helpful advice on cooking Japanese dishes at home, and theyre also very friendly. The stores stock is excellent, with a lot of items I either wouldnt be able to get or would have to accept a lower quality of elsewhere. I love this shop and stop by whenever Im in the area.
Awesome selection and good prices. Friendly service. Will definitely be going back
I love this little store. The selection is very large for how small the place is. Everything is decently priced. They make fresh bento which are absolutely delicious, and I can help but buy the chocolate melon bread every time I go. The owners have to be some of the nicest people in the all of Pittsburgh. This is definitely my favorite store in the city.
Decent selection including fresh ingredients. The owners and staff are unbelievably nice and helpful.
They have a lot of foods that are more and less familiar to Americans. The owners are friendly. I feel really good trying new foods from this store. It is clean and well lit, and well organized. I hope they stay open for many years to come.
Nice, small Asain grocer. I always stop in here when Im in the area.
There was a great selection of Japanese foods, sweets, and candies! Plus the employees were extremely kind and helpful! Ill definitely be coming back!
Always a great selection of Japanese good and a staff thats always welcoming and friendly.
Great selection and wonderful people..
Very cute. Has a parking lot in the same shopping center as a nice laundromat and beer/wine. Good prices. Good selection of veggies & tofu, desserts, dishware, beverages, seaweed, condiments etc. Extremely friendly. Definitely will return.
I absolutely love this place! They have a great selection & the mochi is amazing. The woman who works there is awesome too!
This place is great. Really nice owners, great selection, reasonable prices.
I strongly recommend the store if you are looking for Japanese food. You will be surprised to find out how much they carry in the small space. They have everything noodles, vegetables, frozen food, candy & chocolate, baked goods and even some bento boxes. Everything is reasonably priced.
Very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed looking around and aroma brought back a lot of memories. They even recommend another store for an item that I am looking for that they dont carry.
Its a small shop, but Ive been able to find all the Asian speciality items I needed. Most notably, Ive had great customer service. I asked about making sushi and got more cultural insight in the types of rice and rice vinegar to use. Note that there is a $10 credit card min.
Very impressive selection of hard to find items. Prices are better than other markets and less than giant eagle and walmart..
This is a tiny shop with the nicest owners. It has all of your essentials from Japan. They had many ceramic plates, bowls and cups for sale.Their snack selection is excellent. They have savory snacks like crispy rice crackers, mochi with red bean inside and dried squid.
The owners are not friendly and inpatient during my shopping in the store.
We shop here frequently for all the Japanese staples that we cant find elsewhere. Weve also found that they have some of the most affordable bundles of green onions (and much bigger than Giant Eagle)! Yes there are some things that are a little cheaper elsewhere, but we like to support small businesses, and want to keep our Japanese store! Also, the owners are very kind and make yummy snack foods.
Small but great Japanese grocery. I was happy to find milk bread there!
This is great place for all kinds of Japanese foods. Everything from packaged food, to ingredients. Most things have an English label, or sticker so you can make anything they sell. Very friendly staff.
This must be the only store in Pittsburgh where we can get various Japanese foods and items. This is a small shop, and I know some of my Japanese friends go to bigger and larger Japanese stores in Columbus or NY, but Im really satisfied with this shop. Staffs are very friendly, and I can get almost everything I need to live a Japanese style life in Pittsburgh. The only drawback is small and steep parking, but I really like this shop.
Ive been going here for over 10 years and this is easily the best Japanese store in Pittsburgh. For, specifically, Japanese products no other place has the variety or quality. The prepared foods are also delicious. There was a time where I could stop be for a bento everyday, and they were always fantastic. The quality does come with a price. Some items will give you sticker shock, and you can certainly find better deals in The Strip, so shop wisely.
I love the Tokyo Japanese Food Store of delicious foods, great bulk items, funky cheese, solid produce, friendly people. Excited to make this my primary grocery store.
The best little specialty market you could ask for. The owners are so nice and the selection is excellant. Some items do change with the season but theres always something new to try.
I was not happy with my experience here. This is my first trip to a Japanese/Oriental Market and I won’t return to this store. I don’t know how so many people left good reviews for this place.I went in for fresh ginger and dried mushrooms. Over half of the fresh produce items were moldy or didn’t have sell-by dates. The woman at the register was sitting there when we walked in and obviously did not check the quality or cleanliness of the store before opening.I would definitely not risk buying ANY produce/meat/fresh items here.It was very cramped and seemed like many items were out of place as well. Also, a $10 minimum for card transactions is very inconvenient.Truly disappointing.
Love this place. Great selection.
Easily the two nicest people Ive ever met. Very very helpful and knowledgeable. Great selection of items. Ill definitely shop here again.
Excellent source of Japanese foods, snacks and groceries. Friendly service.
They are the ONLY Japanese Grocery in the state, this is crazy. The owners were super friendly, answered our questions with patient and even offer free chopsticks when we dont have cash. Will definately come again!!!
It is a tiny Japanese store but sells the essential stuff for making Japanese cuisine. I was looking for shio koji and other Asian stores didnt sell that. Thankfully I found this Japanese store and no need to buy it online!
Clean store, fresh produce and products, good service and products you cant find everywhere. Worth a trip!
Seems to be the only place in Pittsburgh to get a lot of Japanese items. Through the winter, we were coming here to get broths for hotpot stew every week. We live in the North Hills, and Oriental Market is nearby, but this store stocks the remainder of what we need.
Owners are great. Best Japanese selection for groceries in the city. Prices are consistent with quality of product. Will also find harder to get items if they can.
Convenient to cook some Japanese food. Some nice candies and drinks from time to time. Im a regular.
Great selection, friendly staff, really clean.
I LOVE this place. They have a wide variety of Japanese foods and snacks, even fresh vegetables and meats. The owners are very friendly as well.
Cute little store with great products from Japan. Love the different flavors of Kit Kats. Very friendly staff.
Love this place! Incredible butcher, great produce, amazing service. Our go to place for grocery shopping.
One of the many Asian grocers in the area, its a smaller store that seems strictly Japanese. They have a small selection of housewares and skincare and a lot of food. Theres fresh, frozen, ramen, drinks, snacks, and a bento box area. I like the kit kats, ramen, and frozen dumplings. Theres parking behind the building because the front lot is always full.
Great selection of snacks and drinks that are not easily found.
Safety and helpfulness.
The food is fabulous, the menu is marvelous, the ambience is amazing; but man, they need to quicken the kitchen.
Great experience overall, staff was extremely helpful and kind. The products i bought were all top notch and just what i was looking for.
Wonderful!! Great selection! Friendly staff! We will be back for sure!
This is the greatest Japanese store in shady side. You will find everything that you are looking for. Its so fun.
Only Japanese market in the city where parking is no hassle and shopkeepers are very kind and patient with non-Japanese newbies. Found every ingredient I needed. Will be back.
The only place that I know of that actually sells dango 🍡 and takoyaki. There was also a few things I didnt expect. One of them being octopus shashimi. If you like making your own sushi then this is the place to go and get your ingredients.
Friendly service, authentic, high quality and fresh food.
They will speak to you in Japanese or English. I prefer Japanese personally. They are very helpful and kind here.
Loved the owner . my best friend Jane Grasso, who teaches Japanese took me here.. I fell in love !
Great Japanese food store with very warm heart boss.
Nice selection of Japanese items you cant find at most stores around here.
