Okay, this modern art at an extreme level. You wont find traditional canvases on the wall or the typical sculpture. Some of the installations are truly bizarre. We enjoyed it, just visit with a very open mind and no expectations.

Always has interesting exhibits that come and go as well as some neat permanent exhibits. The gallery consists of 3 buildings on same street, one large main building, and 2 smaller houses that gave been turned into galleries. There is also (limited) but free parking in a small lot on the side of the main building.Just be aware that some exhibits are extremely dark (low lighting), some exhibits have uneven flooring, and include a fair amount of steps to go up and down in the smaller galleries. There is also a cute gift shop and small cafe located in the main building.

If you were looking for something unique, this is the place to go. Even the setup of the buildings is different. I highly recommend anyone to go. the only issue I saw that would not be held as its not really handicapped accessible in the first building. The first one is not conducive even for anyone who has difficulty walking, just my opinion. The rest of it is easy. The last building where the entrance is did not have much. Building 2 is shut down right now.

Stumbled upon this contemporary art museum while visiting in downtown Pittsburgh for a night. It was open past 5 which was great, it was slightly hard to find but worth driving around for. It has a parking lot too which was nice. The art was very unique and literally pieces you could be in/a part of. Hope to go back one day to see new exhibits in the annexs!

An extraordinary experience! In my personal opinion this Museum its AMAZING! In the Sampsonia Annex, I felt overwhelmed, back to my childhood! Extremely powerful atmosphere, almost like a haunted house! Then, there was the exhibitions in the Monterey Annex, extremely rare and interesting! At this point your head is full of ideas and creativity, like a brainstorm...then you have the peace, calm and emptiness of the Main Building......the Mattress Factory Museum provides you an ecstasy and enchanted art experience...Ill be back there again soon!

The installations here vary heavily by subject, medium, and artist so its hard to give a review that will last as installations change from the time of review. Unfortunately we missed out on a whole building because they were working on setting up installations in a building that wouldnt be available for around 2 months but they gave us 50% off coupons if we want to buy tickets to come back and see the new installations upon their completion which was a nice touch. I certainly wouldnt consider coming back so soon without the incentive. The staff was nice and I personally enjoyed many of the exhibits. Many focus on our own perception of the world such as rooms filled with colors to give the impression of dimensionality while the changing light in the room played with our minds understanding of this dimensionality. Similar effects such as projections/cutaways of light in dark spaces and Yayoi Kusamas typical infinity rooms also played with similar ideas. Unfortunately, because the bridge between the stairs and the main building are open to the air, the inside can be a bit warm though this is atypical since it was abnormally hot during our visit.

Its an experience! Definitely a unique museum in a very unique part of Pittsburgh. The top floor exhibit with the upside down manikin horse with its face cut in half with a mirror replacing it is top notch nightmare fuel. The adjacent room with the spinning curtains is more fuel for your nightmare fire. The dark exhibit on the 2nd (?) floor is incredible. Simply amazing. DONT USE YOUR PHONE FLASHLIGHT YO. That just ruins the darkness. My favorite exhibit by far is the wooden confused chaos that is the cluttered stand-alone townhome. Its phenomenal. Its not the most jam-packed museum and if you take your time, you can spend 2 hours here, but if you bum rush it, itll be more like 30 minutes. Dont do that. No bum rushing.

Honestly, for the amount of money that was spent to enter this musuem, it was quite underwhelming. I have no idea how the first building you enter passed any type of building code, with the holes in floors, narrow, dark and uneven floors. The whole musuem is poorly lit and hard to see anything. Provided is a picture of the tool chest I had when I was a child in the museum. If I knew it would have been art, I wouldnt have sold it at a garage sale many years ago. All in all, if you are bored in Pittsburgh, want to underwhelmed with art and have nothing else to do, this might be the place for you!

The Mattress Factory is a museum on the North Side of Pittsburgh. I visited for a birthday party and got a tour of the museum. The gathering space was quite nice. Its a weird place. There were selective pieces of art which I actually enjoyed and which depicted true sense of utilizing artistic concepts in an intellectual way. Both of the art pieces were from dark floor (where they have kept minimum interference with light). Room with the mirrors is interesting. The one with all the carpenter work is very eerie and disturbing. I found it v overwhelming. The apartment is also a v unique and interesting concept. Rest of the artwork was v subjective. I still think that the admission fee is very high for the art displayed.

Very cool art installations and set up between three buildings in a beautiful neighborhood. Its a bit trippy and some of the art was explicit, so keep in mind for younger ones. We enjoyed our visit. We didnt notice that they installations had a small sign to explain the artists concept until half way through - so be sure to look or ask about them. We would have like more information about the artists as well - one building did provide. Unfortunately at the time of our visit a good number of installations were closed to set up a new ones. We received a coupon for a free admission but since we are out of town, we wont be able to use it. Staff was nice! We would recommend a visit! One of Pittsburghs unique museums!

Exhibitions at the mattress factory can be a little bit hit or miss based on your own personal taste. The person who likes to go through museums at full walking pace and never stop to really think about the exhibits, will enjoy this place, but really wont get as much from it as they could. However, if youre willing to linger and think about the installations and give them some time to sink in, and also maybe look up something about the artist on your smartphone, youll get a lot more out of these. Fair warning, like almost all Avent guard art installations any political topical content tends to range on the very socially liberal side of the spectrum. If you want to bring Fox-News-watching curmudgeonly Uncle Ralph to this place, hes going to complain.

Most art in the mattress factory wouldnt catch a childs eye or should. The second museum is difficult to maneuver for an adult let alone a child or senior. The third was bland on the second and third floor but the area when you first walk in takes the cake. A few cool photo opps but needs more current art and cleaned up some. After this museum I realized Im not as artistic as I thought. Or at least I didnt quite get what they were going for here. I think it was a bit too extreme in some cases for me.We started out thrilled with the unique 4th floor, and then when we moved down to the 3rd floor we lost a lot of interest. The mirrored room was certainly the highlight of this museum. The 2nd floor is basically empty rooms with a special dark experience.
