The server went to surprising lengths to prevent me from accidentally purchasing a sweet wine. Much appreciated effort to keep me in enjoyable wine territories.
Often a select draft of wine beer and cider. New coveted outdoor space and great service.
Not just because several of my favorite folks work there, but the selection is very carefully curated, so anything you get there is going to be excellent.
Great selection of Wine, Beer & Liquors (love their Sake!) and friendly staff. I look forward to be able to drink and snack on the spot again!
This place is the best. Not only do they have an ever changing and delightful selection to choose from, they also have the most wonderful staff. They are very helpful, and you could talk to them for hours (but dont -- pandemic)!
Surprisingly good prices, given that you cant walk out with a bad bottle. Owners are very helpful and the selection is small but very tight. Good selection of fortified wines, vermouth, and so forth too.
The sweetest people, super knowledgeable with an impeccable selection of wine/beer.
This is a great spot. So easy to stop by quickly to pick up a bottle or to and stay inside to have a glass of beer or wine. They are also cool with well behaved dogs inside as long as you keep them on leash.
Our favorite spot for grabbing some bottles to go. The staff is always friendly and helpful with suggestions. On a nice day its well worth sitting outside. If youre a wine lover, they offer a fantastic monthly wine club to try new varieties that you might not check out otherwise.
The bottle selection on beers is well refined and curated exceptionally. Im not a wine, cider, nor vermouth, but can see the selection is wide and varied. Great service and atmosphere.
Great recommendation for a “smoking” wine. Thank you!
Perfect neighborhood bottle shop where everybody really does know your name after a while. The owner, Adam, is really sweet and goes out of his way to make people feel welcome and free to ask any questions about his remarkably curated offering of beer, wine, and cider from around the world. The venue is small with somewhat limited seating, so its great for meeting a friend or two, but maybe not a huge group. They serve Grilled-cheese sandwiches, but I would plan on finding food elsewhere. Also, plan on street parking. The 1856 parking lot is TINY.
Great selection of quality and rare wines at great price points. Staff and owner are very knowledgeable and can guide you to the bottle you need. I mostly buy wine here but there is also a good selection of beer and cider. There is a bar and some seating for drinking and glass or two. Monthly tastings often focus on less know wines regions and can show you something new that you didnt even know you needed!
Great little wine bar. Convenient bottle shop. Nice shopkeepers.
This shop has a lovely ambiance: big windows and sunlight and I especially love the classes they host. Mallory and Martin work really hard: gathering historical and contemporary facts, developing informative cute brochures, and planning out a spiel and general course of action. Despite all the obvious prep work, it feels very natural, with ‘lecture’ bouncing back and forth between Mallory and Martin, Mallory sometimes accompanying Martin’s talk with drawings on the chalkboard, and participants encouraged to chime in. With little hipster asides, Mallory is earnest and serious in her attempts to educate us – Martin is the perfect foil: snooty, wry, and full of British-isms. They serve you flaky scones and bubbly before class starts. Although they both know mounds about wine, they manage to make the class interesting and comfortable for people with a wide range of background in wine. Maybe because each class has such a creative focus, everyone’s learning something. These are great events for making new friends. When they played a rap song to drive home one of their points, my crush on both of them was sealed and delivered.
Wonderfully curated selection, knowledgeable staff, and the owner Adam is just a great guy. And did you know they offer keg sales? Perfect location to get 1/6th barrels for a home system!
Great spot to pick up a bottle of wine or beer.
Love the little side patio outside with the serving window for orders
A beautiful, tiny place. You will not regret your visit.
I always felt like the beer selection was lacking. Sometimes the sketchy mart across the street is better. The good thing 1856 has going is the tap selection.
Great choices for beer. Very helpful!
Upscale, friendly atmosphere with plenty of charm. One of my favorite bottle shops in Portland, to grab a drink.
Nice place to stop in for a drink, fill up a growler, or try a new beer or wine. Nice folks here.
Small little bottle shop, sometimes they have some interesting stuff but mostly its the same, and a bit overpriced.
Decent selection, nothing crazy. Staff is friendly
Intimate place with an awesome selection.
Love this place!
Our fave place!
Sticky hands all day
