Incredible shop and incredible people. I’m visiting from out of state, came to West End for some gear as well as looking for local group rides. Andrews service was phenomenal when helping me find what worked and fit best for me. Never once did I feel like he was trying to “sell” me something. He genuinely was passionate about cycling and providing the most functional and quality product for the task. He gave me plenty of advice and classic routes to seek out. Also, Mark invited me out for the local lawyers ride. I felt privileged to be able to join the group. The ride was so beautiful as well as a great workout. Afterwards, Mark even took the time to have a great conversation with me in the shop about the cycling culture in Portland and recommended other great rides. Couldn’t have been happier with my overall experience at the shop as well as my time in Portland. Thanks guys!

Ive been in the shop three times in the last six months and Im leaving a review because my experience has been consistent. Some shop chains in Portland, not mentioning any names, use scare tactics to have you do repairs that dont need to be done, and push products on you (this has been my experience). Not here. The staff has been very helpful and amazingly knowledgeable about many fine details which shows that the owners are investing in training to keep their staff up-to-date. My particular situation required new cycling shoes and the proper footbeds to support my arches so that I can have comfort over long rides. They have special equipment to measure my arch and make sure that I get the right foot supports, which will make a big difference in comfort for me. They also do full bike fits I found out as well and Im considering it. Long story short, it comes across clearly that they are there to meet my needs and not push theirs. Greatly appreciated.

It was clear that he really just wanted to share a brand he liked and wasnt trying to push me into buying anything. He was so friendly that I asked him questions about titanium bikes as Im in the market for one. Again, he spent a lot of time with me and thoughtfully answered all of my questions. Ive been going to these guys for around 6 months for service and I am very happy with not only how Ive been treated, but the workmanship and follow through they provide. Although they have many customers, I often feel like I am a priority and they provide me with the very specialized service that I need. They are also way more reasonable than I would ever be on parts that they replace in terms of parts breaking or wearing out prematurely (cables, chains etc). In addition they take the time to train you on your bike and how to do certain procedures yourself for instance like measure a chain for wear or show you where and how de-railer cables typically fail. Another example is I took my bike in to get fitted with fenders, for an appointment I had scheduled the following week (we just wanted to pick the fenders on this particular day), but the tech in looking at my bike found something unusual with the shifter, put it on the stand and made some adjustments - i left with a better bike. These guys are what Ive been missing.

After a long tour from NYC to PDX, I decided to let West End Bikes pack and ship my ride back home. The demeanor of the place is pro, and the staff seem to be a little too proud of that fact. I tried to ignore the attitude of the shop and just trust that these guys -- given all their confidence -- would do a stand up job.Two weeks later when my bike arrived, the dynamo wiring connecting the front light to the rear light had been cut. Someone had literally snipped the wire. What were they thinking? I called the shop and the mechanic who packed it - his name is GEOFF - denied the allegations. I sent an email to the shop to try to get someone to acknowledge the damage. Maybe BRE? But its been over a week with no response.Moral of the story - do not come here. This is a snobby place that doesnt stand by their poor work. After biking across the US and hitting up every LBS I would pass, West End will be remembered as the worst bike shop in the country. Cycling is not a pore mans sport... that having been said, the bike shop workers in phoenix are all friendly with each other... its almost as if almost every bike shop owner drinks a beer or two with all the other bike shop owners and they are like this with messengers, pedicab drivers, bike cops and cycle security officers... when you go into a bike shop you are taken care of like your family and if they dont have what you need they know who does and they send you there as if your being sent to another family members house... here, its not this bike shop in particular but all of them Ive been to, that you belong here, if you love cycling than we will bend over backwards to help you out with that mentality just isnt here. There are so many cyclist its just a business that sells bikes and parts and repair... You might as well shop online if you have to ask about prices, bike shops in portland to me are just a place to get mechanical work done, beyond that expect to be treated like a customer in idk say um an antique shop for example. So my rating isnt low because its a bad shop, they have great stuff and they are cordial and professional... its just that, thats my problem, i want a mechanic that wants to find a way to help me find a way to make my merger messengers wage work to keep me going down the road while not being so broke i cant eat. Ive come to the conclusion that such a cycling culture is never gonna be found in portland.

Ive been here a couple times to get my bike serviced and they may be the best experiences Ive had at bike shops in Portland. Not only were they friendly and welcoming right as I walked in, but they took care of my bike right away. Ive walked in fully intending on dropping my bike off, as most shops Ive gone to are usually backed up and need days to do simple repairs, but they put my bike up on a rack immediately and I was out riding again an hour later. (YMMV)I bought a custom built bike off of some dude on Craigslist which seemed perfectly functional upon my test ride. Three weeks later, I was a pro at patching tubes as I probably had 10 flats within that time period. Try as I might, I couldnt figure out what was causing the issue. Throw in a chain that snapped, and some broken spokes, I was beyond frustrated over my recent purchase. I took my bike here just to get my spokes fixed and the mechanic went above and beyond helping me get it setup. He took the work of a handyman and fixed it up like a licensed contractor (his words, not mine). He also comped some parts and labor out of sympathy, which was much appreciated.tl;dr: If you need to get your bike serviced, I cant recommend this place enough.
