Barrel Thief is a great local shop to procure your wine and accompanying goodies! Booth and Diane are extremely knowledgeable if you are looking for something specific, and great at offering a variety of wines if you dont have anything particular in mind. We get a monthly case (there are multiple price levels available, and you can choose monthly or quarterly) and have enjoyed sharing those bottles with friends and family over the past year. Stop by to peruse the shop or get your wine delivered if youre short on time. Really cant recommend this place enough.
Booth and Diane not only know wine but their customer service is amazing. They will find you anything you’re looking for and even personally bring it to your door if needed. The Barrel Thief is THE place to go in Richmond for wine. Oh, and there’s always something new to taste if you stop in the shop!
Great wine shop with a wide selection at price points to fit just about any budget. Have had some excellent wines, enjoyed great tastings and events, and look forward to returning frequently. It has become my go to wine shop in Richmond.
Love this business and so happy to support it. Diane took the time to source a wine from Portugal that wed discovered on a trip. Thank you!
My son sent me 6 bottles every month for the last 6. So far 3 have been totally undrinkable… I brought 1 back but didn’t bother with the rest as it is not convenient. Just for the record, I even think some box wines are good… these were just skunky. One bottle out of 36, ok… 3 in out of 36 is not a good record.
I live in Germany and spent forever trying to decide what to send my mom for mothers day. I stumbled upon this place and was so grateful to find a reliable and local place that delivers. They allow you to select a time frame for delivery so I was lucky enough to be on the phone with my mom when she recieved this. With travel difficult right now, this meant a lot to me. I cant wait to send her more surprises from here!
I can rather assure you that this wine shop was the most beautiful winery of all! Much like a set of wines, the feeling is magical. We enjoyed sitting here and watching the world go by, drinking wine. I encourage you to spend some time in this area. Its all fantastic. We are certainly going to come back!
I used to belong to a big name wine club and switched to Barrel Thief because I wanted to support local. But my experience with Barrel Thief has exceeded expectations. They’re not only local but you get infinitely more for your money. The service is amazing and they work with my not-so-sophisticated pallet and make me feel like a sommelier. I always look forward to my next case!An out of town friend also sent me a birthday gift through Barrel Thief and it was amazing. Wonderful wine and cheese.Clearly, I can’t speak highly enough. Cheers!
Diane and Booth have helped us numerous times (whether in the shop or over email). We trust them to give us honest opinion/recommendations and plenty of variety to keep us always interested in something new. Cant wait for a time when we can do Friday tastings or more in-depth classes.
I found the wine selection here pretty versatile and a good combination of local VA, US and international selections. Great neighborhood store!
The true measure of customer service is what happens when things go wrong, but Barrel Thief really went beyond my expectations to fix the problem and make it right. This is truly a terrific and reliable wine store. Thanks again.
A great spot for all kinds of wine. The grocery and bar items were an extra bonus and reason to stop in.They have updated to Square so its real easy to track receipts and points
Richmond is full of wine and cuisine gems but Barrel Thief wins HANDS DOWN. BT really stands out for its selection, expertise, and the small details that make each experience delightful. Highly highly recommend
Booth and staff are very knowledgeable and provide great service! We can’t wait for post-COVID meetups for tastings and dinner. Even with limited access due to virus protocols, Barrel Thief has provided wines and provisions for our 2020 holidays and every day wine enjoyment.
I recently did a curbside pick up for my order and it was seamless. I didnt know the name of the wine I wanted and Booth went above and beyond to find the wine I was talking about! They even offer FREE (tips are appreciated!) delivery but Im looking for any opportunity to leave my house these days so I chose to drive to the store to get my order.Their wine selection is fantastic: something for every budget, every taste and even hard to find wines. If youre not sure what you want, just call them and theyll give you options without being pretentious.
We had a case of wine delivered by these fine people and we could not have been happier. It could not be easier!Amazing wines and amazing customer service. We will definitely keep ordering from here.
Barrel Thief’s delivery and online ordering has been top notch. I have received two deliveries from them and both were smooth and easy. Great selection as well in the mixed case.
Amazing wine selection, knowledgeable staff, wide range of prices. Easy ordering and same or next day delivery to my house during COVID19. Im excited to try each bottle in my box!
From NC and whenever in Richmond make a point to stop by Barrel Thief to see Booth, lean on his expertise for a some suggestions and walk away with a case with variety. I stick with a couple favorites but each time I discover new bottles based on his advice that expand my knowledge and appreciation of wines. With I had a shop local to me of their caliber. Even then would still keep Barrel Thief a mainstay of my visits to Richmond.
We have ordered their Rose trios, which are totally affordable and equally delicious. They also have the perfect accompanying charcuterie boards, which make you almost feel like you are in the shop listening to live Jazz. Their delivery is so prompt and free!! We are so happy they stayed open. Thank you so much Barrel Thief!
This shop has the most friendly and knowledgeable staff! The wine selection is excellent, but the help you receive with recommendations and pairings is the real service here. I always walk away happy. Side note- dont miss out on having a light meal/snacks here. Attending a tasting, then enjoying a bottle of wine from the shop with a cheese plate is one of my favorite Friday night activities!
Lovely selection
I have been in to Barrel Thief once for appetizers and wine. Great wine selection and the live music was the perfect addition.I have also ordered delivery 3 times now from Barrel Thief. Orders have been delivered prompt and perfect! I have 0 complaints when it comes to the selection or service I have received. Definitely will be my continuous go to!
Great service, large selection and reasonable prices. The staff will help you find the perfect wine. It never feels pretentious. They also have tables and serve food. I’ve held a few community events there and they are very supportive.
Excellent selection and amazing friendly staff! the curbside pick up and delivery options are super helpful.
Excellent establishment, came for a small dinner and I had the Reuben, it was real good. Had a bottle of wine (from the selection right there mind you) to accompany dinner. The jazz group was playing and it was real nice. It was a little packed but we were able to find a table relatively quickly. The service, was good they were rather busy so it was to be expected that there was some slow down.
I went in to purchase a bottle of wine for a Secret Santa gift. I know nothing about wine, so when I asked for help, I was taken care of immediately. The man who helped me was very attentive to my budget and what I was wanting, and he helped me select the perfect gift. He was very friendly and he knew a lot about the product, and that made me feel confident with my purchase. I will definitely go back if I am in need of another bottle.
Nice little selection
Great selection and customized mixed cases. I went there frequently before, and now Im especially excited that theyre offering their inventory through an online wine shop for curbside pickup or delivery.
So I live three/four blocks away and decided to go to their $1 Friday night wine tasting from 6-7. The guy tasting the three wines tonight was friendly and gave a good history of wine in an uncomplicated fashion. The other guy servicing the table dining section was also very friendly and customer aware. However the girl with the glasses needs a new eyeglass Rx or refresher course in customer service. I sat in lounge area with my glass of wine that I ordered from wine tasting guy and she brought two glasses of water and sat down in front of me but no eye contact or verbage offered even though I was looking at menu. She also returned to refill two ladies water glasses at a high top three feet away from me. I had to go to counter and check out and guy who was in another service area apologized for her poor service and did say that if I returned he would take care of me. Since I live four blocks my return could be likely. She walked by when I was checking out and by time I left she had already made it to communal table where I was sitting with small plates and was ready to take the order of two females who had returned from wine tasting. Having worked in service industry myself, I believe that solo customers should receive extra attention or at least same attention as other customers. The other customer at high top made point to speak to me when I was leaving and considering that some people refuse to eat alone, it is just sad that server was unaware of her duties.
BT has a great system for online ordering, contactless pickup or delivery. Loads of selection in every price range, plus curated cases that you can purchase online. Great meat and cheese boards too!
Barrel Thief’s delivery option has been terrific during the crazy COVID-19 pandemic. It’s been a great way to get great wine, beer and cheese ASAP. Thanks BT!
Love me some Barrel Thief. After a dinner out, we like to come here, buy a bottle from their retail shop, and pay a small corkage fee to drink it there. They have an excellent wine selection and ambiance.
Expert guidance on wine. Reasonable prices. Love the atmosphere.
Very cute wine spot. Good for catching up with an old friend or a date! Love that they had a live jazz band. Very affordable house wine. Ill def be back👌
Booth .... And staff what can I say... WOW... I have been coming here for some years now. Have had the pleasure of meeting his parents and extended family. Great people. Wife and I live on a farm in Prince George county. So it is a bit of a hike for us to come to Richmond. But it is without doubt that I go to Barrel Thief. I am Covid secluded but I just finished a bottle of Domaine De Fenouillet . Beaumes De Venise 2016..... It is Tantamount that when you shop wine you shop Barrel Thief.... THEY ARE THE BEST!!!!!!
To be perfectly honest I dont know a lot about wine. Nor do I know a lot about jazz. I know a bit about charcuterie - enough that I really enjoyed the accompanying wine and jazz on statuary night. I can see how this is somewhere Ill be coming back to again and again. Perhaps Ill even learn something about the wine.
Great service! They were 10 min from closing and still helped us choose a wine and even let us taste a few! It was wonderful
Great selections and friendly staff. Henry the schnauzer is a real class act
Highly recommend this place! Nice live music and good wine there. Not very croudly and loud, so you can have a conversation.
The best little hole in the wall! We only recently started going, as we originally thought it was just a wine shop. It is so nice to grab a glass of good wine and listen to some live jazz. Certain staff members are not the warmest or friendliest but I have never had a bad experience.
Good food, nice wine selection and music, too!
Edit:We came back again because we were curious due to the high reviews of the food. However, we waited a long time to get our food and it was nothing special. The macaroni, crab and apricot sauce was good, wine was ok and the rest was average quality. Its not worth the price, but it has a cozy atmosphere if you sit near the back.Old:When we came to the place around 8:30 at night, they said the kitchen was closing. We hung around the area and two more people came by after us, only to shortly leave the place as well. If it says online that the place closes at 10, why did the cafe close early? And why isnt the cafes hours online? We hardly get to see each other lately so it really put a huge damper into our night and we were really looking forward to trying their food.
Great selection and knowledgeable staff. I left with some really great wines that made for quite a lovely evening!
Thoughtful recommendations, savvy selection.
Nice wine store! We went here for a free tasting and then stayed for a glass of wine. The cheese plate was great!
Great atmosphere! The staff does an excellent job of wine recommendations to match the delicious menu! Gotta try it for yourself! 💯
A friend and I went on a Saturday evening for the live jazz. The music was delightful. We shared a bottle of Argentinean Malbec ($30.00 well worth it) which had a lovely pungent start and finished with a lightness. We shared 2 appetizers and 1 entree. The food was rather enjoyable, the service was acceptable. Returning this evening with another friend. The whole bill with with tip was around $60.00.
Fun. Great atmosphere! Wish jazz played longer and more consistently
This is my absolute favorite place to eat in Richmond! Not only is the food great, but the service is attentive and everyone who works there is very knowledgeable on wine. I love the bruschettas and all of the cheese plates. HIGHLY recommend!!
Nice place. Good atmosphere Enjoy Jazz band. Menu needs a little work.
Get to know Booth Hardy and the team while taking advantage of the amazing dine-in offer where you can buy off the shelf!
Food is really good. Service is a little slow. Large open space, not very warm. Would me great for Girls Night out.
Best selections in town and great people!
Live Jazz every Saturday night - great small plates, sandwiches and homeade soups
Great atmosphere. Simple yet unique
Sat down, chatted, ate a bite, drew on the disposable tablecloth, heard live music, friendly staff. Lovely.
Great place to have a glass of wine and enjoy music Saturday night. Hint make a reservation. And take a bottle home with you!
Nice little wine shop and cafe. Kitchen opens at 4 pm.
Music and wine was great. Food, not so much
Great food, big portions and great atmosphere
Quaint, full of personality and a great place for wine!
Great staff great product for the price
They set table up for us outside just so we could bring our dog and enjoy wine.
Great wine and beer selection. The wine tastings and accompanying tapas are great too.
Great spot for classic jazz, every Saturday night!!
Participated in the Rose tasting offered at BT last night and walked away very disappointed. While they offered 8 different wines for tasting (for the somewhat pricey $15 tasting fee), it didnt take long for palate fatigue to set in, given the tartness and acidity of the rose. So, in a place that already offers up some great food, youd think they would have at least had a crostini or two available, right? Not even a cracker! I was amazed that a wine shop doesnt appreciate how much food can enhance the taste of a wine and help to showcase its properties. But, sadly enough, the BT folks missed one of the most effective tricks for selling wine -- along with the chance to sell at least six bottles to my friends and me (our average purchase at other wine tastings).
Small plates and great wine selection
Awesome wine and appetizers and great jazz excellent service
Creative food, excellent service, entertaining decor
Excellent wine & music!
Good wine
White chicks dive bar??
