I randomly came here after work by myself because it’s literally right by my job and I really enjoyed myself! The staff was friendly, the customers were so nice, and Tim (with Tim’s Tuesday Time Machine) was so nice and engaging. I’m still relatively new to Richmond, so I really enjoyed the friendliness of EVERYONE. The food was so good (I had wings and collard greens), drinks were bomb, everything was affordable, good vibe inside and outside. I’m definitely coming back again!! Definitely recommend.
This is the first time I have tried The Pitts. We had a food truck location spotted and decided to drive out to it. I got the standard pulled pork entrée with 3 sauces (NC vinegar - great job on the spices in this one, most people go heavy vinegar and forget about the spices to balance, Honey Hennissey which had a light honey, mostly bourbon flavor, and Memphis which had a delightful brown sugar undertone), cornbread (hot off the press like it just came out of the oven or a pan, very light and fluffy for cornbread - yum!) and hot fries. I ate half of those before remembering to take a picture to share so please note that you get a really good portion of fries. The seasoning is delicious on the hot fries and the fries are nice and crisp on the outside and melt in your mouth on the inside. Definitely worth a stop!
The best parts of the Pitts are the drinks and the outdoor space with a DJ. The meal I ordered was so small it couldn’t possibly be considered reasonable for almost $18 and the food was average at best. The cornbread was a 2x2 inch square wrapped in plastic clearly microwaved. The pulled chicken was dry and only survived because I combined with the cole slaw. The cole slaw had too much vinegar and didn’t have the sweet tang often found in this side dish. The potato salad was barely average. We also had some wings that were super tiny and over breaded. The blue cheese with his wings was a packet of blue cheese salad dressing we think someone picked up from another restaurant. Oh, and all of the food was served on tin trays with wax paper under the food. All of that would have been fine if the value received was worth the money spent. The atmosphere is that of a local dive with music, laughter, reasonably priced drinks and an overall chill vibe. But don’t get the food. It’s not good enough to be worth the money we all work so hard for. Will I go back? Maybe. Will I ever order food again? Nope.
Beautiful I had a wonderful time cant wait to go back again
I’ve picked up up dinner here a few times and the family loves it! The appetizers are super tasty. The meats all have a perfect amount of flavor and moisture on their own but the sauces are all amazing too. Consistently good BBQ, thanks!
Great local watering hole. Food is always good. Bartenders can pour one heck of a drink and the backyard is a whole vibe. There is always something cool going on here.
This place was so so good. They went above and beyond to try and help us get our order right and I was having card issues and they were super patient. The ribs were on a whole another level of good. So tender; the bones literally fell out. Will absolutely be coming back.
They hit a home run with me on my first try, I decided to go back for more. Maybe I caught them at a busy time? I ordered the exact same sandwich as pictured below, brisket on a brioche bun with extra bbq sauce, but received the regular item that was on their menu instead. I ordered three tonight and was reluctant to check the boxes before I left as the food was just that good on the first go around. I didn’t receive any bbq sauce containers at all! Not even one of the sandwiches were on a brioche bun. For $43, I felt like I basically wasted my time and money. I much rather would have remained on my diet and had saved my money. Sometimes the best just can’t be duplicated.
I just stepped inside. It was very loud. Good place if youre looking for a karaoke bar.
UPDATE: I spoke to the owner after she replied to my initial review. She apologized for the inconvenience and stated they do have vegan collard greens and that it should have been conveyed but it wasn’t and she was sorry for that. She also stated that you can buy just the sandwich alone if you want and doesn’t know why that wasn’t given as an option either. I told her I understand that people have hard days and that sometimes it just doesn’t go well. I’m thankful she took the time to talk to me. That goes a long way! She also said she would comp a meal if I do decide to try their vegan options. Even if she didn’t do that, I have major respect for someone who follows up on the feedback. Hoping the next time I update this review, it’ll be five stars from getting to taste the food!Previous ReviewI had a pretty bad experience at the food truck just now. I was excited to see that they have vegan options - that’s awesome! I ordered a vegan barbecue sandwich. The lady asked what what I wanted as a side. I asked for french fries. She stated that they were out which was fine with me, I just looked at other options. I then ordered green beans. She said that they have meat in them. She then stated that so did the baked beans and collard greens. The only other options were potato salad and mac & cheese. I stated that that was fine, that I just wanted the sandwich by itself. She told me I had to get a side and could not just get the sandwich. I asked her how I could if I was a vegan if they were all non-vegan options. She stated I could get the chicken sandwich that was vegan. I asked If I had to get a side with that as well and she said yes. Again I stated that none of the options were vegan so how do I have to get a side if I can’t eat it. She just said sorry. I was not able to eat anything there even though they are advertising that they have vegan food. It would’ve been a different story if I didn’t have to get a side. Please fix this because it ended up being a problem. I left and went somewhere else.
Takes forever to get a drink n food due to low staff. Please hire employees and pay them accordingly. Youll need help behind the bar most definitely. Also, ICE COLD BEERS are appreciated.
The Pitts food truck stopped by my neighborhood last night and I ordered 8 oz of pulled pork. The pork was tender, juicy, and they gave me three of their sauces on the side. I recommend the Blueberry BBQ sauce! Unique and flavorful.
Solid pulled pork, but the sides are lacking. Mac was extremely disappointing.
Karaoke outside food great people super friendly. Loved it.
Went here last night an had a ball ... definitely will be returning an the chicken as bomb ...Im mean real good .
Ive never had baked beans this good! The BBQ chicken was awesome as well.
I had to sample meat platter it was delicious but the piece of rib that they serve me was the end piece no bones I like my ribs with the bone the macaroni and cheese was delicious the string beans was delicious
Great outside sitting, eating and drinking area.
Chys is THE best. We need someone like her at EVERY spot in town.
Ordered the bbq sampler with ribs, bbq, fries and greens. It came with cornbread and coleslaw. I was hesitant to try the blueberry sauce but Im glad I did. Everything was awesome.
Great Customer Service, Delicious Food (homemade potato salad, collard greens, and banana pudding), Fun Atmosphere; Good Drinks...enough said!
Nice in the cut spot the food was pretty good my ribs unfortunately were a little dry and burnt, but my chicken and pork was on time! they are also a little expensive but definitely worth the vibe and experience
Loved the atmosphere good for letting your hair down.
This place is awesome, Especially on Thursday Nights Karaoke, Lots of Motown fun
Had fun...food was good...drinks was the bomb
Fun, vibrant, eclectic. The BBQ is delicious. The vegan BBQ is flavorful. The sides are fantastic and the dessert is divine. This establishment is run by some of the most caring and wonderful people you will ever meet. Thanks for hosting our volunteer lunch!
Great ppl great food good music....
This place was fun, chill, very relaxed, but the smoked pork was amazing. Theyre not fooling around there. I also really liked the slaw - tangy/crisp, very fresh. Overall a super positive and welcoming environment with great cue.
The brisket was so tender. Drinks specials and the Comedy was on point.
Food is amazing...drinks are on point...love the environment!!!
Very nice party setting, staff courteous and friendly a great place to mingle and have fun. The music is off the chain.
This venue has an outside area being used. Open Mic on Tuesdays and music on Saturday. It has umbrella tables with heat lamps(2). There are 4 tables with propane fed fire pitts. Perfect for the ladies to handle sitting outside. Get there early per event. My Yuenglings were $4 a bottle. Food is served and groups seemed to enjoy it. Parking out front for 10-15 cars at least. Mask wearing is encouraged upon entry to the back yard!.
Fun, casual BBQ hangout. Great service and quantity of food is extremely fair compared to cost. Beef brisket is absolutely AMAZING 😋😋.
An outdoor yard is the savior of this place during the current medical uncertainties. Pleasant, helpful wait staff, a good selection of food and beverages, a karaoke entertainment system, going to The Pitts BBQ Joint is like having a BBQ in your back yard with all of your friends in attendance. A lot of fun here, certainly recommended.
This place is a dive. And, I mean that in the very best way possible. The food is excellent, the decor is vintage and quirky. Patrons are friendly and the staff, especially bartender, Ryan, are awesome. Drinks are cheap and the food is delicious. Try the crab cake sandwich. There is a massive patio out back that feels like hanging out at a friends house. I highly recommend if you are looking for authentic, no-frills, full dining.
The vibe was wonderful. The food was average to below average tonight. My green beans were salty, the collards were sweet, and they dont serve their delicious cornbread anymore. They gave us a slice of white bread.
Never again. Overpriced for small portions - side orders are microscopic amounts. Pulled pork and ribs were DRY. Chicken had a sauce of sorts, but it was overwhelmingly vinegar. Add-ons were also missing from our order. The whole meal was an expensive, unsatisfying disappointment.
Excellent customer service and food❣
Yo. This place is great! My family vis veggie and we ate like hogs! They have something for everyone
The BBQ is amazing. Without a doubt one of the top 3 BBQ spots in the Richmond area. Great smoke flavor topped off with a hint of vinegar. I cant wait to try the ribs.
This place is a hidden gem. When driving if you blind you just might miss it. LOVE THE OUT SIDE BACKYARD BBQ FEEL.
Was very Disappointed. I have gone here a few times and I noticed that they had tables with reserved signs so assumed you could make reservations so when my family came into town called to reserve a table and was told they dont hold tables needless to say me and my family went that evening and while we were sitting there having dinner and drinks the waitress walks over and places reserved on 2 tables yet I was told they dont hold tables so I guess they only reserve tables for select individuals very upsetting
BBQ and 🍟 fries were tasty, the lady that took the order on the phone was very polite 😀
Handwritten note that it was not open.
Great outdoors set up! Great music and great food! Collard greens was off da chain!! And dat brisket!!❤💪🏾
Im from texas and glade i finally found a good BBQ joint when im here working.
Good price. Spicy chicken sandwich relatively spicy
What a hidden gem. Great food and fun atmosphere. I dont even usually leave reviews, but we had such a great time.
Despite overall good food when I come for barbeque I would prefer more than two sauces other than north carolina or blue berry sauce as many traditional Barbeque heads want more variety .Being as it is local competitors offer variances of sauces for their Barbeque
What a great find! Very eclectic, fun atmosphere. Drinks are great - had an outstanding Bloody Mary with Tito’s, and had veggie BBQ. It was fantastic as was the carnivore BBQ according to my cousin who accompanied me. Love this place, and will be going back and bringing family and friends.
The best BBQ meats in RVA. Ribs, Brisket, Chopped Pork all smoked, moist, and full of flavor. Fries are tender inside & crispy outside, Level 2 Hot Chicken is very spicy, green beans are southern grandma style, mac & cheese wasnt available sadly. The young man working up front was friendly. Venue embraces its dive persona. We will be back!
Had a blast! Food was ok. Karaoke was fun!
This is the perfect spot for a drink and excellent food! Customer service is nothing less than perfect and the atmosphere is complimenting! Every night there is something different that they offer, as well as good food if I didn’t say that already! Awesome spot!
The service is top notch... The drinks are A 1 ... And the food is truly mouth watering..
Great food. Vegan options. Nice relaxed atmosphere around 5pm on a Wednesday. Highly recommended.
I had the Hellraiser Chicken Sandwich and it was the best spicy chicken sandwich I have ever had. It has three levels of spice and I got level one. Amazing!
Friendly staff, a delicious brisket sandwich. Collards were perfectly seasoned.
Very friendly staff!! Ended up here by accident but the bartender Andy was awesome didnt get other guys name but the answered all questions and were nice. They have happy hour m-f 3 to 8 which is longer than most places. $1.50 jello shots $2 domestic beers and $3.50 rail drinks!! Small but cozy and fun
Drinks were great, and the bartenders mixed the drinks exactly as I asked. Prices are very reasonable, and the DJ did not play the same 5 songs all night.
The service was great. Just wasnt impressed with the BBQ sandwich that I ordered. Was expecting more flavor.
Friendly staff, loved the out door back yard area. This was a fun night
Five stars for everything at the pitts inside and out including staff.Need a Pitts 2 in Chesterfield..truly amazing, outstanding place love it.🤗💚🎈🦋🦉😀🙈🙉🙊👌
Good live music Saturday night, Tony Farris was fabulous! The food was surprisingly good and large servings, well priced. The staff was really attentive, caring, especially the young guy bartender( I didnt get his name). They serve breakfast entrees even at night. I had a really good vegetable omelette. They specialize in barbeque dishes, others said it was quite good. If Tony Farris plays there again Ill be happy to return. A nice pub and staff atmosphere!
Awesome!!!!! You have to check it out.....
Good time didnt stay long but nice host and people. Mos Def returning.
Not sure if the cook was having a bad day or what........the rack of ribs were tuff to eat, and tasted like someone poured liquid smoke on the meat before they tried to cook it. The meat itself had no flavor other than a heavy smoke on it. The size of the sides were a joke. There was hardly enough in them to feed 1 person let alone 3. Not very happy. Doubt i will come back.
Awesome. Cozy. Delightful. Lisa Ann was wonderful to share a treat with our Greene Elementary Teachers and Staff, as a thank you for their support and hard work in taking care of our kids and community. The service was remarkable. The ambience was so cool. The backyard relaxing. Robert was super great. Even though he is a Boston Red Sox fan, my husband thought he was sooo cool. Great tasting ribs and mac. Next time going for the spicy chicken. Will be back. Thanks Lisa for introducing a new little joint.
Their burger was amazing and the fries were on point. I will definitely be going there again, especially it being so close to work. The staff was great.
Food cooked to perfection. A hidden jewel
Completely Awesome BBQ sandwich. And the Mac and cheese was the best Ive had in Richmond. Legend Octoberfest on tap, what more do ya want?
1st time there... the food is great in taste, size and price. Service was great as well. Will definitely be going again.
I went with my son, his wife and other family members to this restaurant. He said the food was always great, today—after almost 2 hours we got up and left. 2 of us had our food, most of it, was told over and over it being plated now. 1 other table was eating. It was the worst place ever. We paid for our drinks and then got up and left. I was told we need to eat there, I generally give a place at least two times before saying never again. But this time—one and done.
Food is always delicious. Drinks are always good for the price. Excellent environment.
I travel a lot for work and just happened to walk into this place. Pleasant surprise. Nice ambiance, friendly staff, the ribbs I ordered were delicious and came quickly. Its in a quiet suburb byt has a lot to offer
Lovely little hidden gem! Love the outside area!
Well this place has totally filling and sustaining food.huge burger thats good quality meat .the cheese sticks are good and the Mac cheese tastes like somebodys mom cooked it .and the staff is cool
Very nice ole school joint. Great food
Some barbecue places are on a mission. Some barbecue places buzz around trying to be the best in town, but falling short. Very few that I have found so far venture close to the depths of flavor and perfectly cooked meats youll find in the pit at The Pits BBQ joint. My first visit here was very welcoming and Brian at the bar could not have been friendlier. Hes got a great personality that will take him far in this business.I got a 3 meat sampler which included ribs, pulled pork barbecue and chicken, with sides of collards and mac and cheese, and a little slice of cornbread.Accompanying these goodies was a blueberry based BBQ sauce, which was one of the best sauces Ive ever tried. Phenomenal! I was promised a second Carolina type sauce but that was not included in my to-go order. The pulled pork didnt need the sauce at all as it was seasoned perfectly with that little edge of vinegar and heat thats indicative of a great Carolina BBQ.The ribs were great, but other than smoke, lacked any detectable seasoning. Not fall off the bone but just slightly tugged off the bone which is how it should be. They dont remove the membrane on the back of these ribs before cooking, but its easily pulled off to access that wonderfully tender meat beneath. Sauce is definitely needed with this entree. I will definitely order these again as long as that sauce is available.A big disappointment for me though, and the reason for only four stars, was the smoked chicken. The chicken was a beautifully smoked and perfect looking leg and thigh quarter. The meat was tender and juicy, but the skin was absolutely inedible. It was so tough and leathery it actually tore when trying to remove it and sounded like fabric ripping. It was almost impossible to cut, and chewing was out of the question. It was literally like a piece of thin leather. Being that all of the smoke and flavor was on the skin I had to rub the meat on it to get some of that deliciousness onto the actual meat. Hopefully this was a fluke because I love smoked BBQ chicken. Ill try it again when its fresh off of the grill and hopefully that will make a difference. Otherwise Ill be avoiding this particular dish and trying their many others. The collards were amazing! Perfectly seasoned with a little bit of heat and a little bit of sweet and a little bit of sour. I could eat a giant Jethro bowl of this! The mac and cheese was equal to the collards in flavor and perfect preparation. One of the best Ive had.The basket of fries I received was literally in top three best fries Ive ever had! Im not a big french fry person but these have me addicted! The cornbread was moist and basic and went well with everything.I look forward to returning for some of the festivities here, such as live music and games out in the backyard. This is a unique joint indeed in that it feels like youre at someones house; hanging out and eating great food, but what feels best is a belly full of excellent southern BBQ!
Super good ribs, super good service! Try the blueberry bbq sauce!
The pit was great a very good environment for 40 + group food is excellent prices are reasonable and the customer service is unbelievable if you want to go somewhere and enjoy yourself the pit is the place
Love having this spot close by! Have tried the ribs, pork Sammy, the Tasty Burger and its all been super good each time.
Great place Great atmosphere Good food

Had fun great DJs on Friday
Nice small place with great food.
Great place great food great entertainment
Horrible service, I was a long time patron and ordered out for over a year. Came here Sunday with a large group of family from out of state to show them a RVA dig and what a embarrassment. Out of buns, 3pm and no brisket, “fryer broken.” Horrible service, rude bartender. NEVER AGAIN!
Our #1 go-to place for brunch and dinner. The hellraiser chicken and BBQ are definitly killer, grits are the best Ive ever had (though consistently better on Saturday than Sunday) friendly staff, chill environment, fun events, and doesnt break the bank.
Good prices, good food, good people
