Britex moved from Geary, around the corner to Post, in December. Ive been there numerous times since the move and I like the new space very much! Theyve moved from a deep and narrow 4-floor space, to a larger, rectangular, 2-floor space. The first floor has high ceilings, lots of natural and electric lighting. I found many new fabrics that were buried in the old space. The first floor carries wools, silks, rayon linings, evening wear fabrics.A very dramatic staircase, and an elevator (near the cashier), leads to the second floor, which carries notions, patterns (they no longer carry Vogue, but theyve added several independent lines), buttons, zippers, ribbons, threads, wedding tiaras, home dec, cotton fabrics, knits (except wool knits, which are on the first floor). The second floor is quite cozy, especially compared to the first floor, but still has good lighting.I like the new open layout and the wealth of lighting.

My wife loves it here. Its a huge playground for creative folks who work with fabric and linen. I dont have a reference point for how affordable(or not affordable) these types of fabric should be, but most of the regular priced materials were around 40-60 dollars per yard. It sounded quite expensive to me, but I wasnt surprised given the prime location next to Market Street. The employees here were very nice.

The best fabric store in SF. So many premium material from Italy and France. Of course, a little pricy.... And when I say a little pricy, it means The price of the fabric is more expensive than ready to wear sold in the mall.Update:My favorite fabric store “Britex” has moved to its new location. It’s still around San Francisco union square, just a few blocks away from the old store. The new store it’s definitely an upgrade, the first floor became larger, customers now have direct access to “new fabrics” and “final sales” without climbing stairs. It is as cozy and immersed in the atmosphere as the old stores. I like that store has nearly 70 years of history, it offers enough options for many high quality lace, wool, cotton, linen, silk. More importantly the sales people here don’t just sell, they are consultants, many of them have a side-business as a designer or a tailor.I recommend you take a look at this store if you want find quality fabrics which is better than JOANN. Britex won’t let you down. The owner and the staff here really understand the fabric world.

I traveled to San Francisco last year and bought some gorgeous silk chiffon here. It is so delicate and dreamy! I was again looking for a similar silk, this time for a client, and unable to travel to the city to shop in person due to covid restrictions. I spoke with Douglas on the phone and he helped me find exactly the fabric I was hoping for! He is sending me a sample and was so helpful and nice the entire time. Both experiences with Britex have been fantastic. The salespeople are exceptional, so is the fabric. THANK YOU!

Swoon over the beautiful fabrics and the prices that come with them. Seriously gorgeous stuff and honestly for the quality they are very fair prices. Selection of silks and wools cannot be beat. However while there are a lot of fantastic products the layout is not well marked and it can be daunting for infrequent visitors to find their way around. Colors within basic fabric types are also sometimes lacking. Go to get inspired and speak to fantastic knowledgeable salespeople but if youre looking for one specific thing you may be disappointed.

Rude staff; hidden credit card minimum.I called the store because I was lost finding the store -- and I asked an apparent dumb question, which floor are you on (many fabric stores are not at street level). Four floors of all things textile. Things are pricey, but they have hard to find prints and fabrics. They also have ribbons, appliques, feathers, buttons, and rhinestones. A tiny bit of notions. Service varies from helpful and friendly, to aloof-- but most are friendly. Some staff are more knowledgeable than others. They dont have a modern system, unfortunately, so if you want to go back for something you best have a swatch. Having the tag information means nothing apparently. Also a bummer that they dont have online shopping. Very old fashioned style business, but worth a visit for the unique finds.

Lets start with: Ive been going to Britex Fabrics for the last 14 years. I stop by the store to buy something or just snoop all 4 floors... Well they moved. Only 2 floors, less stuff and the fabrics are just priced way out of line for even a high end store. This time, I stopped for speciality notions. I bought 5 yards of black lace ribbon, 2 different styles of Frog Toggle clasps (2 of one kind 3 of another) and 6 buttons (1 blackish brown rather plain round): Total: $146.00!!! I was shocked when they totaled it up. One of the Frog claps were $18.95 each (I didnt realize they were that much money) and the 6 buttons were a total of $23.75. I went back to the store to return 3 of the clasps and the 6 buttons the following day. To my surprise: NO Returns or Refunds... Moral of this story: Look at the bottom of the receipt. I will not be going back to this store.

Very average selection and overpriced. I think the people who love this place have never been to a fabric store before, and especially not one anywhere outside the US. Britex has a wide variety of materials, but the selection and quality within each category isnt great. If you have a real project and know what type of material you want but perhaps just not what color, this is not the place for you.

Gorgeous array of fine fabrics and notions; you can also get books and magazines (eg Burda) here. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Unfortunately not a one-stop shop for all your sewing needs; while they do have a wider selection of notions than your typical Joanns, they didnt have everything I needed (I was looking for bra making supplies). The fabrics are pricier than what you would find in a warehouse but the quality and excusivity is well worth the cost for some of their unique textiles. Britex is more than an institution, it’s a repository of the highest form of culture and aesthetic. Lace from Italy, ribbons from France and buttons from who-knows-where, only the pinnacle of society were able to afford such fineries in the past. All that artform and product over the centuries in attaining distinction through the best fabrics is now concentrated in this store. Even though I am not able to sew my way out of a paper bag, I am inspired when I walk in. I hope this store will prevail but I fear that it will succumb like its neighbor Gumps, unless all you folks go over and buy something there.

Love the store itself and the warm and friendly greeting from the staff on the first floor, but the woman behind the counter on the 3rd floor sours the wonderful experience here. Time and time again (including this afternoon), she differentiates how she treats and talks to minority customers. No greeting before or after my transaction, but the white lady behind me? Totally a different story. 2 stars since I probably will go back to get any special and hard to find item, and her -cism is her issue not mine, but no more than that as we all should be treated equally and nobody deserves mis-treatment.
