A place where you can breathe fresher, greener air. If you cant afford to go to Japan and you need to get away from all the chaos around you and if you happen to be in San Francisco, visit the Japanese Tea Garden. Relaxing, peaceful, serene place to clear your thoughts. The pagoda was undergoing some reconstruction at the time of our visit and was covered. Wish we had a sight of it. I would certainly go back to this place.

The garden was free before 10am on Wednesday. When I arrived, there was a SF City Guide who was about to begin a free walking tour around the garden. This was an excellent experience and gave me a deeper appreciation and understanding of the different garden scenes. The gardeners have done beautiful work landscaping the grounds. It is a nice place to walk around but there are limited areas to sit and relax, other than the cafe.

We had reservations for the California Academy of Sciences and had some time so we decided to check this place out. Im so glad we did because everywhere you look is beautiful. Its very relaxing just walking around. Whoever does the landscaping for this place deserves some recognition. Some green tea from the shop and a nice stroll around the gardens was a good time. The history behind this is a little sad how this man and his family lost his garden and his possession but it is really stunning and beautiful. You can tell the love it had gotten over the years. It is pretty big for a nice stroll.Near the entrance is a running tea shop. They seemed really overwhelmed and backed up however it did not take long for us to be served but there were other people complaining.Overall another nice experience to separate from the city.

Beautiful landscaping and artfully maintained structures. However, it is very busy and touristy even in the mornings and weekdays, so parking is hard to find. Expect a leisurely stroll to get there as well. Theres not much fresh food at the cafe but the scenery makes up for it. Sipping tea and looking out from the balcony on a misty morning was as zen as it gets.

Absolutely stunning place. Early in the morning with not a lot of people around its perfect for relaxation and meditation, and around 9am its perfect for photos. There is not a single piece of trash around and the trees and foliage are passionately maintained. Three of us, all seniors, rolled into this place at 1:30 pm on a Thursday ( 07/22/2021). We picked Thursday, thinking...light crowds. Wrong! It was packed! Also, we thought the adult prices ($11 adult/$7 senior) were rather steep. So, because of crowds and prices, I discounted my rating from 5 to 4 stars. Nevertheless, let me assure you that the garden itself is absolutely awesome! Just pick your time to visit carefully (like early am), for maximum enjoyment, especially if you contemplate meditating.

This was a good outing while visiting San Diego. It took quite a while to get there by bus and then walk about 5 blocks to get there. Once there it was pretty crowded since the weather was good. The cost is $12.00 per person and they dont take cash. It was nice to visit but I expected it to be bigger for the price. You can walk through the gardens and back at the entrance in 15 minute. So disappointed to see the The beauty and tranquility ruined by the number of people they’ve allowed in at the same time. They have sold out and it feels like Disneyland! No longer do they have quiet places to have traditional tea but it is now nothing different than a Starbucks! I used to come here a lot when I was a child and I know things change but I am so sad I am in tears. This was what I was looking forward to the most on my trip. The gardens are still lovely but they need to limit the number of people allowed in and not allow children to climb up pagodas and sculptures. .

Visited the San Francisco, Japanese Tea Garden, located in Golden Gate Park this weekend and it was a wonderful experience. The Japanese Tea Garden, is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States. Luckily, despite COVID, the Japanese Tea Garden is open daily. There is an entrance fee, but, it’s nominal for San Francisco residents and a bit more expensive for non-city residents. As a San Francisco resident I paid $7.00. There was a friend with me who lived in California but not San Francisco and they paid $10.00. Unlike most Japanese Tea Gardens that are free of cost, as the oldest in the United States, it costs to maintain the premise, Japanese structures, grounds, and the small eatery located on the inside of the tea garden. Once you’re inside, there is a self guided tour that you take around the tea garden, following the posted signs. It’s incredibly beautiful and calming. My words won’t do it justice, so please take some time to look at the pictures posted. I highly recommend the tea garden. It’s good for casual strolls, dates, or family outings.

Wind breathes through bambooWaterfalls trickle on stonesThe garden brings peaceAs one strolls through the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco, it almost feels like you’ve been removed from time and space. The city drops away, and in its place is a peaceful world of water, air, and earth. When you first arrive, the tea house is readily apparent at the heart of the garden. Layered behind carefully tended trees and a quiet pooled crowned with a water fall. As the viewer approaches the pool, a small embankment almost entices you to dip your toes in the clear waters. At the tea house one can experience a variety of high quality teas, including a delicious matcha that comes with a bite of mochi on the side. Several other snacks are on offer, but the unexpected gem is definitely the green tea cheesecake. After tea, exploration begins! An obvious point of interest is the barrel bridge, who’s sharp incline often makes visitors uneasy about the climb. Those who brave the bridge are rewarded at the top with views of the surrounding garden and pagoda. Many of the structures in the garden are original to its inception, or were added shortly thereafter. The pagoda itself is just about 100 years old, and is currently undergoing a restoration to ensure it lasts for 100 more! Beside the pagoda, the instantly recognizable red gate brings luck to all who pass through. What I found particularly interesting was the collection of dwarf trees that sit on the hills below the pagoda. The trees were original to the initial caretakers of the garden in the late part of the 1890’s when the garden was built. As the US became embroiled in the world wars, many of its citizens of Japanese descent found themselves interned and under suspicion of espionage. During this unjust period, many belongings of families were sold or repossessed -including a number of the trees in this very garden. Eventually the trees were returned and planted here with the inclusion of a plaque -lest we ever forget this time in US history.

Quick tip: they close at 5PM during winter operations, but 6:30PM outside of winter. Sakura blossoms seem to bloom sometime in the first 2 weeks of April, though thats bound to change year by year. The park itself can seem a bit small. Its pretty easy to walk through the entire area within 30 - 60 minutes, depending on your pace. The pagoda is still being restored, so it may be a while before thats back up. Some interesting notes to the park are subtle, like how one of the statues was donated by Japanese school children more than 50 years ago. Or when you walk to a traditional gate and notice the quality of the paint, it really has a they were working with the best that they could get at the time kind of feeling.Theres a small snack stand near the entrance. Seats are a bit limited, but you can get snacks like ice cream, dango, and even savory foods. The only thing on the menu that I can recommend at the moment is the matcha tea. Lets be frank, you dont come here for the snacks, its just a convenience.
