The book a coworker had been discussing with me for years was published in December 2020. With coworkers catching Covid at work (including yours truly), vaccination program offered to employees who wanted them- and people out sick from both vaccine doses (including yours truly), and life getting more and more hectic, it was only in April Bob mentioned to me his book was out! Currently available at Changing Hands by special- order only. Once ordered, youre not able to return for a refund, even if the cashier is just at the other side of the desk.Think Ill just order from Amazon from now on. The cost per book was the same- usually CH runs $5-15 higher per book!- so I decided to give CH my business, as I try to support local shops. The books wouldve arrived in two days, or less via Amazon, compared to a week from CH, and I wouldve been able to return one or both books, if I wanted to. (I already have the Kindle version, which Bob makes a percentage of, and hed have to pay $5 printing charges for each book purchased online and at any bookstore. E-books sounded the best deal for any author and the environment!) I only bought these books so that he could autograph them, and also to show him my support.)At least I was able to enjoy some sweets from neighbor Wildflower Bread Co on this trip. Goodbye, Changing Hands!

A fabulous local bookstore with new & used books, as well as a fun selection of gift items and stationary. As a nice bonus, they do have a stamp card (one stamp per $10 spent, with $10 off a purchase when you fill your card). They have two locations (Tempe & Phoenix). The Phoenix location has a bar inside it (the Book Bar); this one is connected to the Wildflower Bakery and Cafe next door.

One of my absolute favorite places to visit when I am in the Phoenix area! Changing Hands is just an absolutely amazing bookstore. I love how there are so many signed copies of various books around the store! I also love how it’s so easy to get lost in between the bookshelves of the store just looking at various books & reading the various reviews that the staff has put on the shelves by books they have personally read. I can never not stop at Changing Hands without leaving the store with a couple handfuls of books to read! I could go on & on about my love for this store! I always can’t wait for the next time I can return & shop for books!

The selection at this location is much more than the one at the Phoenix location and both are great. We came to get the second book in a series that my daughter just finished the first book and we were able to find it, and she is already off on her way reading it. So great to be able support a local store with our reading needs. It is definitely worth spending a little more to keep local stores in business. There is literally something for everyone in this store even non book lovers. Great toys, games and puzzle selection as well as souvenirs from Arizona it is definitely a book store and a gift shop.

Visited today. The store is beautiful & displayed so cute. This is the Phoenix area, folks!! It was SO HOT in the store my friend & I were getting nauseated, besides the sweat running down our bodies. When I checked out, (with my whopping $2.99 purchase), I told the cashier “Wow, it is REALLY hot in here”. She said “Oh, we have fans back here”. (Pointing to the box fan blowing at her legs)I said “If it wasn’t so hot in here, I could have shopped longer”.Her response…..”Would you like your receipt?”Now THAT is the kind of response that will NOT bring me back!

Less than pleased with the atmosphere in this bookstore. On both occasions the staff have been cold and unfriendly. My boyfriend and I are so used toBeing able to remove our masks while being seated, when we were approached for sitting alone by the bathrooms without our masks we were both surprised.A man with long hair in a ponytail informed us that we were unable to remove our masks at any time in the bookstore so we willingly obliged and put our masks back on. However less than a few minutes past he is seen watching us from across the store on several occasions trying to see if we were wearing our masks properly. While I understand the importance of wanting to keep the business up and running his efforts were honestly borderline harassment. He once again came over and Told my boyfriend he was not wearing his mask properly as it had slipped below his nose during our conversation. As we spoke to him another associate was called over and he began to inform us that We could wait outside while they shopped for us. (We were merely interested in sitting and having a conversation over a book in a small corner of the bookstore away from everyone else.) After we decided it was time to leave, we witnessed two women in the store clearly wearing masks below their noses to which the employees saw and said nothing. We watched as the women walked freely in the store as we were strongly encouraged to shop elsewhere. While I understand the mask mandate, the level to which the store interacts with customers is robotic and frankly obsessive. If you were truly concerned about the health and well-being of your customers why are you open?

Loved this store. They aren’t the friendliest staff, but the place is amazing. I was instantly hit with that bookstore culture I haven’t felt since the 90’s. It’s not just about books, it’s the vibe of the place. They host author events, have a huge assortment of trinkets, and tons of postings for local community things. That’s what bookstores used to feel like, gathering places for readers. The kids section looks like it is lovingly tended by a real educator, the travel section looks like a world explorer checks into it every week. It’s a thriving spot in a surprisingly well-read city. I wish the staff was a little nicer. I witnessed a worker shrug off an older couple looking for a kid’s book, probably for their grandkids. When she walked off, I helped them. I’m a teacher so it felt like my duty. :)I really hope they step things up. Places like these are important for readers who would rather pay more than deal with a soulless Barnes and noble. (Not that this place charges more, they had good bargains).

This is the kind of bookstore I wish there were more of. Well-lit with a nice selection (though like most independent bookstores could use a lot more diversity in regards to authors. Especially in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Octavia Butler is so NOT the only Black author out there, lol). Still, it was so much fun to wander the shelves and look for interesting gems that I might have missed. Add to that the whimsical decor and unique gift/bath items and this store is a total win. In fact, I prefer this location to the one with the bar. The staff are super friendly and helpful with suggestions. Plus, they have a cool program for teen readers that allows them to read and review ARCs of upcoming novels. Thats so cool.

I just found my all-time favorite bookstore. There are so many things to see and explore in the aisles of this beautiful shop. Journals, notecards, candles, Christmas stocking stuffers, and of course books books books! There are even a few rows of books, new and used, out on the sidewalk before you enter. The shelves are clearly labeled so you can easily find what you’re looking for—but the store is set up in a way that makes you want to wander aimlessly and look at every little interesting thing. I bought two books during my visit—one book I’ve been eyeing on Amazon and was very pleased to find that Changing Hands sold it for less expensive; and the other book caught my eye because it was on sale and I thought it would make a good gift.I had a great experience here from start to finish and I’m definitely planning on returning soon!

Personal favourite bookstore in the world. I have two reasons for this:1. You get to feel the books and soak in the chill atmosphere at prices that sometimes beat or at least equal online prices. Who doesn’t love getting to hold a book before you buy it?? Beats clicking ‘add to cart’ any day.2. The range of books is incredible. Whoever does their buying has phenomenal taste. I never go in to buy something specific because I always find accidentally find something that makes me even happier.I recommend giving yourself time here - you’ll want to browse for hours it’s that good :)
