This is one of my new favorite spot! It is conveniently located right off of Florida Avenue and Northwest Washington DC. And comfortably located in a cozy neighborhood surrounded by less greenery. On Sundays there’s a beautiful farmers market in front. And they host a wonderful Patio Diner Special from Wednesday-Saturday.They offer delicious drinks and food for everyone to enjoy.I had a delicious green tea and vegan breakfast burrito. And my friend had a wonderful latte and breakfast bagel. Sorry guys, I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of her bagel.
One of the most charming places in DC to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. Sundays the place offers bagels baked in a wood-burning oven. The same oven where their pizzas are baked. There is an outside garden patio where in season you can pick grapes from the arbor above your head. Beer and wine are also available.
Seriously, the butterscotch or bacon-cheddar scone at Big Bear is probably the best food deal in DC. Each is big enough to be a whole meal, DELICIOUS, and $4! Thats insane. You cant get anything around here for $4. Big Bear is also legitimately one of the cutest cafes Ive ever seen. Its just gorgeous with all the ivy, trellises, hard wood, and exposed brick. Good luck getting a table on the weekend, but you will be glad you went.
Best breakfast burritos in DC. Good vibes and very casual. Perfect for a Saturday or Sunday morning.
Relaxing outdoor seating space with lush greenery to enjoy tasty baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. Great place to spend a morning on your day off. No table service, so no pressure to leave immediately after youve finished.
The best coffee in town! This coffee shop is absolutely amazing every time with their coffee and service! I always drink coffee here because of the taste and the place is great too. They have lovely friendly and helpful staff too. Dont miss the opportunity to drink amazing coffee here.
Really pleasant spot, and the iced latte was good. I’d expect a larger serving for what was paid. The only big issue are the flies. Not sure what was up under the outdoor seating tents, but I couldn’t focus nor did I enjoy the presence of so many. The cute birds were eager to get food, which is sweet and all, but also says something about the lack of cleanliness between customers and overall outdoor dining area. Would love to revisit this spot again, because it’s a good vibe…hopefully less birds and flies!!
Charming corner cafe. Order at the counter, bus your own table.House coffee was a tad sour when I ordered in the afternoon.Chicken sandwich slightly dry. Fries were delightful.A lovely spot to sit and catch up with friends or to grab a table and work remotely outside.
What a charming and intimate discovery. Great outdoor dining in a small garden atmosphere. Simple food, well done. A great experience.
This was one of the most disappointing breakfast burritos Ive ever had. It was basically just flavorless eggs and mushy pepper. There was no chorizo which advertised as a part of it. The sauce that came with it was just as flavorless, a watery tomato sauce. I would definitely NOT waste the $12 + tip and tax on this.
My friend invited me to go for coffee. Weve been to this Coffee Shop and it was a great experience having their coffee while we are talking. A great place to stay with!
Coffee was good. Burrito was okay but not too flavorful. The wait was long. My wife ordered a bagel which she never received. We didn’t realize it had been left off the ticket until we got our food 30 mins later. I believe the individual working the register was too busy listening to themself talk to hear the order.
The food is pretty amazing here and the service is one of the best. I pretty much tried everything on their menu and all of it taste freaking amazing
The food and atmosphere is wonderful, but the outdoor eating area is surrounded with living and growing grape vines which to a gardener is divine. If youre in the area and hungry, dont miss this place.
Food and coffee tasted good (in spite of watered down ice coffee and Luke warm breakfast sandwich), server/cashier were nice but I ordered online at 1003 and didnt get my order until 1106 after 2 check ins. It would be fine, understanding that they were really busy (they were), but when I checked in with the cashier at 1024, I was told just the coffee needed to be made. Waiting, I watched as person after person who was in line ahead, and eventually behind me received their coffee and orders. Id still eat here but it seems that the order ahead saves no time (infact it seems to take longer).
Amazing Fresno pizza!! they unfortunately changed happy hour so it ends at 6 now, didnt see anywhere online about this change
Just tried Big Bears wood-oven pizza and it is now my favorite pizza in all of DC. I love how the crust gets blistered and burnt and is chewy and crisp at the same time. Great selection of red and white style pizzas. If you havent checked them out lately you need to.
Waited a long time for subpar food. They never called our name and had to ask about our food and found out it has been ready and they never told us. The breakfast sandwich was bland and there were flies everywhere.
Like there service. The food was excellent. Great place for a drop in meal.
Ordered my cappuccino online before work. Got to the café, was waiting for my coffee for 20 minutes!!!!! And then I left. Wasted my money and time, so disappointed!!! And it wasn’t that busy! Staff is slow and coffee is way too overpriced. Will never come back again!
Great ambiance and space! Only reason for not giving 5 stars is not having enough information to know how to be seated and order. If that information was posted clearly, then 5 stars definitely. Because I was confused
Pizza Pizza! Thats actually the slogan for Little Caesars, a major American pizza chain founded in 1959. Based on 2020 statistics, Little Caesars is the third-largest pizza chain by total sales in the United States, behind Pizza Hut and Dominos Pizza. This store has much better pizza, check it out!
Great space! Always great service cute setup. Great little pop up today of hand pies and frozen adult drinks ;)
Feeling of gardens it in the middle of one of the beautiful neighborhoods of Washington DC. Cafe, Food, Drink, Good music👍 👌 😋
The food is pretty amazing here and the service is one of the best. I pretty much tried everything on their menu and all of it taste freaking amazing.
I always strive to support local businesses but Big Bear has become so disorganized that I wont be spending any further money here. I put in an order at 9:04 and did not receive my food until 9:38 - meanwhile a whole line of customers who ordered after me were given their items. When I asked the staff if they did in fact have my order, they acted like I was bothering them. Unfortunately, this isnt my first experience like this at Big Bear and I fear they have some things to fix if they want to keep a morning crowd.
Nice atmosphere. Not sure about menu changes since pandemic.
Big Bears patio is lovely. Good coffee and lunch options, too. Docking a star for not having wifi, but I kind of get it because it would be really easy to camp out all day in that space.
Probably an off day, but this happens about 50% of the time:Waited about 45 minutes for an egg and cheese that I had to heat up at home. Staff seemed overworked/stressed. Food is great, but the business has to step up its fulfillment game, especially with more expedient options nearby.
Had a great afternoon her with friends. Great bites in a relaxed atmosphere and ordering was quick and easy.
Great coffee, nice outdoor seating and tight next to weekend farmers market.
It was pretty crowded and unclear about seating. Decided on the egg breakfast sandwich. I did not enjoy this sandwich. About a 1/4 of the way through, I had to throw away. Bummer!
Great service, we love their pastries, coffee, bagels and pizzas!
Great quality breakfast sandwich and iced London fog drink — love that it came unsweetened. Beautiful large front patio seating (first come first serve) and reasonable wait time for the number of people. Tables are 6 feet apart but crowded so if you’re covid paranoid maybe go somewhere less popular.
Cute spot with amazing food. Featured cocktails are delicious. You cant go wrong with anything you choose. Friendly service.
They apparently ran out of pizza. If they are known for their wood fire pizza how does that even happen?
What a great place to sit, enjoy your food and drinks, and the chief stops by to check on you.
It used to be a great cafe. Lived nearby for 8 years. The service has gotten sullen and the food quality mixed
Great fried chicken and slaw sandwich! Suggestion to owners add optional items such as pickles or bacon 🥓
We had an incredible take out family-style meal. The paella was delicious! The meal included a loaf of focaccia which was especially great. The portions were beyond generous. We will definitely be ordering again soon!
First time visitor from Virginia, visited on Friday, 3/12/21. Chose this place for outdoor covered seating option and recommendation from a local. The space is beautiful, but there is zero social distancing outside. Tables are right on top of one another and staff did not enforce the mask rule for navigating between tables and pic-up window. Staff member taking orders was a bit rude and was not helpful in explaining menu items, especially considering there were many items unavailable (pizza, certain coffees) when we visited (5:45pm). Coffee and chai were both weak and overpriced. Desserts, however, were delicious - blueberry rice pudding and carrot cake.
Couldnt make decaf black coffee. They offered a decaf latte instead. Some customers were not asked to wear a mask right at the cash register.
Amazing atmosphere. Good coffee. Get the pizza.
I am lucky to have lived near big bear for quite some time! They truly keep the neighborhood afloat providing vibesss and grape vinesss. My favorite thing to order is the GAZPACHO. It is an amazing experience to consume this deliciousness. I find it best when I havent eaten a meal yet, I feel the vitamins and minerals flow through the blood stream, while the vinegar/vegetable/tomato flavor bombards my tastebuds.
Absolutely incredible cafe. Love the breakfast burritos, coffee, and baked goods. Beautiful outdoor patio covered in grape vines. If you are there Sunday you can go to the adjacent farm market after breakfast.
I really wanted to like this place, but every experience is less than stellar (to put it nicely). Whether it be coffee that leaves you asking why you paid the prices they ask, exceptionally long waits for food when theyre not busy, and worst of all, staff people that seem to generally be mad at the world the only thing this place has going for it is the outdoor seating. (Last time visited 1/16/2021 @ 12:30). I usually dont leave such scathing reviews as Im a business owner myself, so it does take quite a good bit for me to leave such scathing words. Sorry Big Bear
Best local cafe around they support local farmers!
Terrible experience at Big Bear Cafe. My order consisted of simply two pieces of toast with avocado and a couple eggs. I waited for 30 minutes before I realized nobody was coming with my food, so I left. Absolute waste of my time. I do not recommend and will not be returning.
Hi! Apologies upfront for writing in to complain, but this morning I visited the Big Bear Cafe for the first time around 9am, and it was a rough experience. I ordered two drinks but only one came out. After the barista checked the receipt, the order he put in was only for one drink, so he asked me to order the second one, which I promptly did on my phone since there was a big line and I didnt want to be that guy who cuts to the front. We waited another 30 minutes after placing that order for the second drink, but it never came out and we finally gave up and went home with our one drink having paid for two. That usually isnt enough to warrant a note via the website, but I also was observing how things were going in general this morning while waiting and saw two women (one pregnant and one with a baby in a stroller) both order and then wait over 30 minutes alongside us without getting their drinks while folks who ordered after them came and went one after the next. The woman with the stroller checked twice via the pick-up window on the status of her drink since her baby was getting a bit overheated, and both times she was told it was coming out in just a sec but 10 minutes passed and then 15 more minutes passed before she finally gave up at the 30-minute mark and left empty-handed. Im not sure if the pregnant woman was served because we left shortly thereafter and she stayed to wait.It sounds like a lot was going wrong behind the counter this morning, and I understand if today wasnt a great day for the cafe. I used to work in the service industry, and I know this kind of stuff happens from time to time. I heard great things about Big Bear Cafe, but today wasnt a great first impression. I wish the staff had given both women gift cards or said their drinks were free given the long wait, but the staff was overwhelmed and just slinging drinks to deal with the rush. Ill give your place another try, but I wanted to put this morning on your radar. Thanks for reading this to the end!
Always at least a 10 minute wait for drip coffee - today over 20 minutes.
This is one of the few cafes in DC that actually lives up to the name. Great coffee, great (and large) seating area, and breakfast food to complement. Soy latte was excellent, right portion of foam, made at right temperature (no burning soy taste). Only downside was the vegetarian quiche. Tiny portion and the side salad wasnt really a salad - just a few lettuce leaves. I generally frown on places that are stingy with food. But otherwise, I do recommend Big Bear.
A nice place to hang out with friends.
I consistently wait 10-15 for my order after arriving at a pre-determined pickup time, which is disappointing. The staff vibe is also a little off. Looks like both of these experiences are common among other reviewers.
Really bad coffee and the food gave me a stomach ache
This place is such a disappointment. The customer service is beyond horrible - the staff is rude every single time I go in and they make mistakes on orders constantly. This Sunday was the last straw. I placed an online order at 10:30 am for pick up at 10:55 am. 25 minutes to make a latte seems more than enough even when busy. I showed up exactly at the time my order was supposed to be ready and then stood there waiting for an additional 20 minutes. After inquiring 3 times politely about my order it was finally ready at 11:15 am. I was handed my order without so much as an apology even though they had clearly just forgotten it. Each time I go in my experience gets worse so despite living in the neighborhood this will be my last time ordering from big bear.
Great outdoor seating set up!!!Yummy food! Was sad to not have the Lox Bagel as an option for online ordering but the Chicken Sandwich with added avocado was so yummy. My friend had thw Falafel Wrap and she loved it!
The beverages were okay. Don’t order any type of breakfast sandwich. Inedible. Very disappointing.
Ordered this morning using the QR code while standing in line. Apparently, if you order from the window directly you get your order right away. We stood around for 20 minutes watching everyone come and go. When we inquired with the employee as to how we could get our order he replied that we had to wait until the time listed online. This is a ridiculous system and needs to be addressed. Don’t use the QR code. Go to the window
I went here for a latte after visiting the farmers market. It took a long time to get it, because there were a lot of people from the market. But the ordering process was online and pretty simple, the patio was open with plenty of room for distancing and nicely shaded with trees and ivy, the latte with oat milk was refreshing, and the people were nice.
Neighborhood mainstay. Solid every time and beautiful place to spend time.
Horrendous service:The coffee tastes really good and the cookies are excellent - but the service is horrendous. I’m about 15 mins away from big bear so I timed my online order to pick up at the time I would arrive and some. The order wasn’t ready and there was no one in the pick up window. Finally someone showed up in the pick up window and my order was just sitting on the side with the ice diluting the drink. I didn’t get a straw with my order but I didn’t feel like waiting another 15 mins to get a straw. The coffee is good but there’s a lot of good coffee in dc so I will not be going there.
Great dinner.
Perfect for a quick weekend breakfast/brunch. Sometimes its hard to find seating on the patio, but its worth waiting for a table outside. The counter service is usually quick and the iced coffee is perfect
Perfect spot for an afternoon snack. Relaxing atmosphere, fresh ingredients and fantastic coffee. We had local granola, French toast and two bagels one with lox and another plain with cream cheese. All were super fresh and yummy. Also very fast service. Great place!
Every time I’ve been to Big Bear it has been a terrible experience. I’ve waited an hour for cold food (that was supposed to be hot), been told 20 minutes after placing an order that my item was not available, and even been told, after ordering a stout beer, that the light-yellow drink that arrived on my table was in fact the porter, and that I was wrong for questioning. Luckily, with that one, my husband talked directly to the bartender, who gave me what I had ordered. It’s been two years since I’ve been to the restaurant, and I guess I had forgotten how terrible it could be. Trying to support a local business, I went to their website, which asks all customers to order online, rather than at the store, given COVID restrictions. I placed my order and was told that it would be 32 minutes before it was ready. That seemed like a lot, especially compared to every other place I’ve ordered from during the pandemic, but I waited. I arrived at 9:20, when my order was supposed to be ready, assuming the experience would be like every other online order and contact-less pickup I’ve done during the pandemic, and it would be either waiting for me or ready shortly thereafter. Nope. Instead, I was told that they hadn’t started making it, and that they don’t start making online order until the pickup time that they give to customers. I waited.Meanwhile, three other customers walked up to the business, placed similar orders, and were served immediately. I went back to the register and asked what was happening, noting that I had placed my order online 40 minutes ago, waited 10 minutes past my pickup time, and multiple customers were being served before me. She said there were different lines for online and in-person ordering, and “that’s just how it works.” I asked why, since I had followed the procedure requested on their website, and she rolled her eyes and walked away.A few more minutes passed and someone else walked by the pick-up window. I asked if my order was ready yet, and she said that it was just being started, 10 minutes after my pickup time and contrary to what I was told when I first arrived. Finally, the drink came out. I asked about the food I had also ordered and the employee, with attitude, said “that’s why it’s taking longer – because you ordered food.” As if I had done something wrong by adding food to my order. I noted that I had just ordered a muffin, which should already be made and not take any additional time. Two minutes later, the muffin arrived, and the employee said that I “snatched the bag up too quickly, and that was rude.”It was now 45 minutes after I placed the order, and 15 minutes after I was told it would be ready. There was never an explanation of why my order (or anyone else who had been waiting for online orders) was put at the bottom of their “list” and delayed. Never an apology for being behind schedule. Only rolled eyes and sighs, and comments that I was being rude. I guess it is my fault in the end, because this is how they always treat customers. In a time when everything in the world seems out of sorts, in a way it’s reassuring that Big Bear remains the same rude, slow establishment that somehow stays in business. Some things never change.
Good food, terrible attitude from staff. It’s not complicated: you’re taking my money, so just say “please”, “thank you” and stop treating people with condescending attitude.
Love this spot. As a cafe, its got a full selection of coffee and other drinks. There are good pastries and a surprisingly great food menu given how small the kitchen area is.It can be a little tight inside during the winter when the usable space is basically cut in half with no one using the patio, making it a slightly less appealing place to use for work. But it never gets too loud, so if you can find a spot to sit just make sure you have some good headphones.During the warmer months, the patio is surrounded by ivy and is well-shaded. Really beautiful spot to sit.
Great ambience!
