We had a great experience at The Hill Cafe, it’s a bland opening line I know but there isn’t a better way to start. My date ordered the Meatloaf and Lemonade and I went with the daily special, Chicken Stir Fry with Eggplant, Jalapeño pepper Vegetable Medley. Both hit the spot and were well prepared with care. The taste of the dishes both rocked our mouths beyond words. The ambiance was intimate and welcoming and our server was fantastic. 5 stars for RVA.
A very laid-back vibe matches the dimly lit, dark wood interior. Service was on point and the food was good. My fried green tomato BLT was nicely enhanced with the spicy aioli the server recommended and my dining partners burger was also well-executed and satisfying. Overall, nicely prepared classic American food.
Came here twice in the past week while looking at properties in Church Hill. Food came out extremely fast for such a quality restaurant and was delicious. My wife got the fried green tomato BLT with pimento cheese with sweet potatoes fries and loved it. I had the redneck Benedict and it was also fantastic. We also got a burger to go which was excellent. Prices are very reasonable for quality of food. I will be coming back here for sure and would highly recommend.
Food was wonderful, pleasant surprise. Fried oysters on their poboy were cooked perfectly. Berry salad was wonderful too. Definitely will return. Only issue is street parking, hard to find a spot.
The food was good. We felt rushed out after we finished our dinner
I was unfortunately very disappointed with my food. I had Salmon, mashed sweet potatoes and braised collards. Everything tasted like cafeteria packaged food. The Salmon color was almost white and dry in the inside. The collards looked and tasted like canned greens, definitely not fresh. Tasted like they just added vinegar. (Nothing wrong with canned greens if thats what you like. But I expect fresh greens from this type of restaurant)The mashed sweet potatoes were only ok and the only thing I ate the most of. I will not return.
Delicious food. As usual. Very nice ambience.
Food is delicious. Service is fast and friendly. Great location - love this place!
Outstanding food, outstanding service, outstanding staff. Good downtown food good prices, whats there not to like.
Recommended by our RVA Trolley tour guide as good value local place to eat in the Church Hill District. Outstanding recommendation! Monday night Blue Plate Special’s were $4 off before 6 pm. That meant $9.95 for meat and two vegetables choices. Meats included fried chicken, meatloaf, turkey breast and more. Fried chicken and veggies were outstanding. Excellent service, tremendous value, nice place with adequate free on street parking. Great recommendation. See photos.
I ordered the crab dip, which barely had any crab in it at all. It was mainly cream cheese with no seasoning whatsoever and chunks of artichoke. The fried chicken I ordered was good, so Ill give it that.
This little spot is amazing! We are defiantly making this our local spot!! Kim was an amazing server, who was attentive and made us feel at home. Thank you guys! From food to drinks, everything was delicious. We will be coming back and hopefully we can request Kim! You guys rock!
Service was great. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food was great.
Very classy place. I enjoyed the chicken lunch. Even with covid, they were well staffed and the waitress was attentive to my needs. I watched her wipe down tables seamlessly to make sure that the next guest was in a comfortable experience. she wasnt overbearing but checked on me regularly. I was impressed with the chicken and the greens. Will be back.
Food was very good service was very good I would go back again good people
My wife and I went here for lunch last weekend. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was great and the service was exceptional. Definitely going to go back for lunch again
They get a five star as soon as they bring back the poutine!!!! Great place.
One of our neighborhood favorites! We absolutely love this place. The food is always great, and for a very reasonable price. The cocktails are also very good. Try the meatloaf, it’s incredible.
I have been here several times and service and food quality are always consistent. It is a small place that does not take reservations except for larger groups so be aware. On a Tuesday night we were able to be seated very quickly. Monday night Blue Plate specials are a real bargain. I had shrimp and grits and cheesecake which were quite good. The décor fits in well with historic Church Hill buildings all around.
On Mondays they reduce cost of the Blue Plate specials. I had meatloaf, Brussels sprouts and mash potatoes. Excellent and portions were perfect size. I will go back.
Staying in the neighbourhood last night and had dinner plans rained out with the storm coming through. So we looked for somewhere still open after it passed and the Hill Cafe popped up,Great spot for a beer and late night food. The chicken fried steak was so good but the sides were where its at, the sprouts and collards were both amazing.
Awesome neighbor spot. Good food and cold beer.
Soooooo yhea me and one of my gfs decided to hit up this place to try something different and unfortunately different is what we had😒. the food was disappointing and the wait for the food ridiculous. the best part honestly of the dining experience was the caramelized onions which were amazing! Other than that it was lackluster. The View was nice though of the Churchill area
Great customer service; there was a misunderstanding with my order that was resolved quickly. Food is always fresh and worth the price.
I love The Hill Cafe. This place is such a Church Hill staple, and my dad and I have loved going to this place for years. This last time I had the burrito bowl with tofu, & it was absolutely delicious. That guacamole is something to talk about, and we all know the portions are HUGE! Almost everyone else in my family ordered the fried oysters, and they raced about them the entire time. Love it!!
This little restaurant is a treasure! Incredible, complex, and sophisticated yet unpretentious and delicious comfort food. Good wine and cocktails too. It’s cozy and homey inside, and sits high on a hill in Historic Church Hill. Especially beautiful during Christmas, with the houses decorated, and the nearby overlook at Libby Hill Park. Had a great date here.
Had the fish entree, collard greens and mased sweet potatoes. Great food, good service nice atmosphere.
Great overall experience! The food was delicious and the service on point (thanks Kim O.)I highly recomend and expect to become a regular, as this is now one of my favorite places in Richmond.
It was a nice little Cafe. They have yummy fried pickles.
Delicious food and great service. Looking forward to our next date night here :)
Great neighborhood restaurant with friendly staff. The blue plate special deal on Monday nights cant be beat - $7.95 for a main dish with two sides. I am a creature of habit and almost always get the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. I also recommend the brussels sprouts appetizer, fried chicken, hill burger, smoked turkey sandwich, chips, fries, ginger strawberry martini, and dirty limeade. I would not recommend the bowls or the mac and cheese - just sharing as these are two items which would usually be my go-to order based on the menu description, but they havent been as satisfying as the other options at The Hill Cafe for me!
Sweet little spot with awesome ambiance! Loved the shoestring fries.
Always a solid and fun choice in beautiful Church Hill. Indoor and outdoor dining (with heaters, as necessary).
Quaint neighborhood cafe. I arrived before opening and found a couple of others waiting for the doors to open. There arent too many seats/tables so it seems the regulars come early to make sure they get a spot.I had the buffalo oysters for apps and found it to be very flavorful and cooked to perfection. For my meal I got the pork chop but thought it was a bit dry. Also parking is street parking. I got there early so I didnt have any issues in finding a spot so Im not sure how it is throughout the day.
Awesome place to eat with great food with fast friendly service.
My favorite menu item is the fried chicken dinner with two sides. I typically have the macaroni and cheese and collard greens. The meatloaf is always moist and the dessert menu rotates. Seating has been modified to accommodate for COVID-19 and cleaning is very thorough between patrons.
Great food and drinks! Shrimp and grits were on point. Fried oysters were so plump and juicy! Definitely will be back.
2nd time coming and the food was great both times. Quick service and the staff is really nice. Wish I had the chance to check out this spot pre pandemic
This place is absolutely wonderful! We’ve been a couple times now and always order two appetizers Because it is so hard to choose between all of them. (Especially the fried green tomatoes) I really love the teriyaki bowl from here and my fiancé loved the steak, said it was some of the best steak he has ever had. The waitstaff is always prompt and friendly. You can’t go wrong with anything from this place. Definitely worth every penny!
Lovely corner cafe in Churchill with indoor and outdoor dining. Socially distanced properly. Friendly, fast wait staff, good strong coffeePriced reasonably. Could sit there and listen to that old R&B music all day long! I could swear one of my Grandmas was cooking in the kitchen! Collards tasted old fashioned good. Havent tasted better collards or grits or chops in a retaur, period. Delicious grits were thick and a hint of cheesy, smokey thick grilled pork chop had a little char on it. Mom said her crab cake was delish and they loved the sweet potato fries. A little over $50 for three meals. DEFINITELY going back to try more dishes. Only thing I didnt see was the ladies roomNext time Ill check it out. If its clean with everything else its got going on, Ill be a regular
Food was delicious and service was great!
Its in my neighborhood..like a small bistro the food is ok ..the wine is great and the ambiance is wonderful ...the hosts are sweet .enjoy i go there twice a week
The Tofu Buddha bowl was superb! All waitstaff were appropriately masked and 6 feet away. Definitely following COVID-19 guidelines. Ill be back!
Good food and cozy atmosphere
My 2nd time visiting this establishment, 1st time eating there. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the meal was. Lovely bar selection, tasty food. Pleasant service. Wonderful neighborhood spot.
I was disappointed in the food I ordered. I ordered the fried chicken breast and the mac n cheese. The chicken was bland and the Mac n cheese was not homemade - not even close to homemade. Ive had grocery store frozen mac n cheese that was better that what I was served. Do not order the mac n cheese or better yet, do not go here.
Excellent fried green tomatoes and fried oysters! A little out of the way, but well worth it.
Great atmosphere and food.
This place is great. The atmosphere was great. I visited during covid restrictions and was able to sit outside. The staff was attentive and the food selection is great. Theres something for everyone from fancy appetizers to sandwiches to full entrees. The wine and beer options were plentiful and all was priced decently. Ill definitely come back here.
One of the few gems in Church Hill. Small and inviting atmosphere with friendly staff. The food is delicious at a price that’s hard to beat. The blue plate specials are my favorite to get.
Food is amazing and our is very very affordable! My wife and I will be back soon!
The garnished the plate with some grilled asparagus and that was so tasty. I would get just a platter of that if I could! Overall this was a great first experience here, food was on point as well as service. You guys rock and keep up the great work. Will definitely be coming back and recommending this place to friend and family!
Amazing apps and drinks!
Great food, coffee was fantastic. Had to wait even with a reservation, but it wasnt the staffs fault. A diner decided to camp out and read her Kindle for 30 minutes after her check was paid. She was seated at a small table right between the two tables they wanted to use for our party of eight. They finally asked her to move so they could seat us, very diplomatic in doing so. By the way, the Redneck Benedict and Fried Green Tomatoes Benedict are delicious and unique.
Best meatloaf Ive ever had.....dont tell my mom.
Excellent food great service and reasonable prices.
Always a great time here. Great for date nights and family dinners. Were there so much most of the waitstaff already knows our order. Specials are always good as well. Cant really go wrong with the fried oysters.
Nice atmosphere, very accommodating server and bar tender. Good prices and my burger came out cooked as requested and all is good! Ill definitely be coming back periodically when Im working remotely.
Even during or should I say Especially During non-peak hours things are great! The world slows down and the pace at the Hill is exactly what I need. The food is always wonderful, simple, clean fare that never disappoints. A great place to relax, reenergize and get my day on track. For those who have never been there.... Be prepared to wait during those peak hours. Totally worth it though if youre looking to have a great time not being in a rush.
Nice joint. A little more upscale that first thought. But overall its smart casual what ever that really means. Good food. Nice bar. Cozy little churchill joint.
Went on Mothers Day simply based off Google reviews for Sunday brunch spot. We got right in at the right time and got a seat. The Sunday Brunch was absolutely delicious. The coffee was Amazing! It was very busy. The food was HOT. The waitresses were extremely nice. We will for sure be back for not only brunch but we will go for a lunch or dinner. We had a great food experience. And being on Mothers Day was even more special
Great breakfast menu. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Shocked and disappointed they are now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Pricey but pretty on point. I have had some things overcooked, but generally its a great atmosphere and good food. Price in church hill is just a bit higher for whatever reason, but their happy hour specials cant be beat in my opinion! They have happy hour dinner! Great place to enjoy a dinner date, cozy, and good bar too.
Great reviews on: social distancing, friendly staff, speed of service, quality of food, cleanliness, clean and convenient hand washing station, separate men and women restrooms, outdoor dining option, glass separators between booths. FOOD good reviews on: regular grits, collard greens, baked pork chops, crabcakes, sweet potato fries, shoestring fries, slow roasted roast, creamed spinach, roasted turkey breast, fried chicken, filet mignon. NOT SO GREAT review: mac and cheese ( odd flavor), cheese grits (odd flavor), fried oysters (xtra thick breading), italian cream cake (needed butter or sugar). PLENTY OF REASONS TO REVISIT and find another great dish! Those collards tasted like my grandmas! Pork chops were smokey and delicious. REGULAR grits are delish. That filet mignon was crosby and charred on the outside 😳so good. I asked for medium rare but it was between that and medium. BUT.. after TASTING it with that charred buttery taste, I didnt care that there wasnt more red than pink. ILL BE BACK
Excellent food and great service for a reasonable price. Went here twice in five nights while traveling for work. I travel a lot and have tried a lot of different food and was happy to add this to my list of places to visit again.
We had a last minute party of 6 with 3 kids and they were extremely accommodating and seated us. The food was pretty good. The calamari was seasoned well, the pimiento cheese with the fried green tomatoes are fried crispy and the crab dip is good as well, but the crab cakes are very good. The Mac and cheese is an elevated box type taste and the greens are very vinegar heavy but worth having especially if you like that twang taste in greens. The spoonbread had a perfect consistency although I would have like it a tad sweeter. Everyone in the party enjoyed their food and its definitely worth a second visit.
Spoon bread is on point! Ginger beef was a hit too. Ghost Pine as the house Cab makes it a favorite.
Great service! Great food and great prices!
Excellent service 👏
Service is friendly. Food is tasty with healthy options. My family was able to find something to enjoy that suited their variety of dietary preferences. Not always easy.
Awesome food
Amazing food at great prices!! They must have angels in the kitchen because the food is heavenly! The staff is friendly as well. My family loves eating here!!
Service was excellent and the food was on the table quickly which is always great. Perfect brunch spot for a couple or small group of friends/family. Plenty of delicious food options.
Great corner pub and restaurant. The menus is varied enough that everyone can find something. The prices are reasonable. The service was great. They even acted like I was funny with some of my (generally) lame jokes. It has a great atmosphere, and seems to have a wide range of people.All-in-all. Definitely a place I want to go back to.
I had a great experience. Good food. The Manchester Mule was a fun mixed drink. Friendly wait staff. They let me grab a table before the full grouo arrived.
Always great, like family. New patio is awesome
Great service. The flavor of crab was a little light in the sandwich. Salads were OK. The braised collards had a little too much vinegar. Go off peak ad the place is small.
Service at this place is fantastic. We didnt want for anything. The food was delicious. Priced right.
AMAZING food, great price, awesome atmosphere! I’m in Richmond for one night from the Pittsburgh, PA area.....I’d recommend this establishment to ANYONE! If you only have time for one meal in Richmond....make it The Hill Cafe!
Monday nights before 6pm the Blue Plate Specials are $8.95. I had chicken fried steak with white gravy, collards & mashed sweet potatoes. It was all I could do not to lick the plate. So delicious! The atmosphere is friendly & comfortable, the waitress was great at anticipating our need a & making great recommendations. Go! I cant wait to wait to go back!
Been to the Hill Cafe so many times staff know what beer I like to drink! This may be the last great local eatery, at the center of the universe in Church Hill. You can get a great burger or chicken wrap with a beer, or scale up to a really nice salmon dinner and wine with consistent quality.
Pork Chop was amazing and tender enough to be cut with a butter knife.Crispy Eggplant I would recommend to anyone vegetarian or not. You will most likely have left overs.Fried Green Tomatoes for best app.Great Service. Will be regulars and recommend to anyone local.
