Stopped in and had the 4 meat platter. Absolutely every item of meat on the was fantastic. The brisket was especially tender. Sauces were delicious as well. If I wanted to be extremely critical, I’d say the Mac and cheese was ok. The service was top notch. I will definitely be back and highly recommend you try this hidden gem out. I want to hit up cheeseburger day for sure. Support your local businesses!
Stumbled upon this corner store while visiting the mural on its wall. I went in just to check it out and was very pleased with the experience. A quaint little general store with a nice collection of all sorts. I tried their “Treacherous Leches” and loved it! The little art corner next to their coffee section is worth a visit if you like needlework and art. The staff were all very friendly and all maintained COVID-19 protocols by wearing masks.
Stopped by for takeout-- a meat plate with chopped brisket, potato salad and creamed corn as sides. The food was delicious and very flavorful. Service was friendly and fast. They were kind enough to serve lunch entrees a few minutes before lunch started. The store items also are interesting and it was very fun to look around and browse. They have locally made condiments, sauces, and other neat goodies and trinkets. I parked in the street in front of the store, and that worked out fine. Great place to get some barbecue!
Food: C+Service: B+Ambiance: AParking: AI came here after reading all of the raving reviews. Maybe they were having a bad day or my expectations were too high. The store itself is so cute. I wanted to buy one of everything on the shelves. The food was not impressive in the least. The best part about my bbq meal was the white sangria if that tells you anything. The bottom of the well done biscuits could double as air hockey pucks. They were so tough you needed a steak knife to cut through them. They left the skin on the butternut squash in the kale sweet potato salad. Ive also had better bbq at a gas station. The sausage was just ok and the brisket, while moist, was flavorless.Id go back for the sangria. And maybe the cole slaw....maybe.
H&K is such a gem- do yourself a favor: grab some BBQ, a can of beer or bottle of wine and enjoy! Love that you can eat inside this cool market. One of my favorite places to stop when biking around the breweries.
So far, I’ve only tried the breakfast tacos. But l’ll surely be back to try the lunch menu! The brisket and pulled pork tacos were very generous portions, and I could’ve gotten away with just eating one... but where’s the fun in that! Fresh, hot tortillas, eggs made to order, and smoky well-cooked brisket. Yum!The store had a great assortment of items from local companies and artisans. I didn’t have time to browse too much but I’ll likely buy some of that next time as well.Overall a great experience!
WOW.5 stars isnt enough, this lovely little store has delightful wares, locally sourced and does include plenty of vegan options for those who need it. (Not me!) the BBQ is honestly the best I have in Houston. Better than Killen,ls, Papas, and edged out Corkscrew IMHO. If you have never heard of this lovely establishment, if youre curious... Just eat it. And youll be won over, instantly. Big shout out to the owners for having such a lovely place.
Sorry Henderson and Kane, your bbq is just not good. Maybe you can prove me wrong on another visit, but the bbq I just ate was not fit to be served. Everything that could go wrong with each item ordered, did. The brisket was tough, and the fat needed to be cut off with a knife to make it remotely edible. The sausage was overdone and dry. The boudin was the same, dry, with an overwhelming taste of liver that was off putting. Its obvious theres liver in it, but it was too much. The macaroni and cheese was lacking flavor and watery. The whole meal felt like it was a reheated left over, and for the price yall are charging, you need to do a lot better. We found the smoker near the back of the outdoor seating area, and it was not going 24/7 as stated in an earlier review. I wanted this meal to be good, especially when so many love it, but our food experience was unpleasant. The service was meh! When your not asked the question fatty or lean, its probably best to walk out.
So good my cousin Alex works here and she recommended me the Mac and cheese bowl and you add your toppings on it I added sausage and brisket. It was so good! I recommend going here. The owner is so cool and nice 10/10
First time buyer and not happy at all. I got the pitmaster to try a little of everything and every single piece of meat was cold so that made every thing tuff . Not worth the money and time
Great BBQ, sausage, burgers, breakfast, Monday steak night in a historic Houston general store in the old Sixth Ward. Amazingly nice owners and staff. Casual. Great music. Great beer & wine selection. We love this place!!
As my first official Texas BBQ place I think I set the bar pretty high with this choice. I had the Brisket and Jalapeño cheese Sausage with mac and grilled veggies. It came out to be 18 bucks and I think that was extremely fairly priced. The Brisket was very tender and flavorful. You didnt have to chew, it practically melted in my mouth. The sausage was a tad loose but the cheese and Jalapeño were sharp and gave it a nice kick. I tried both their sauces original and spices. Honestly I dont think the spicey had much more heat than your average Tabasco but it did taste good. The Orginal was your standard fair of BBQ sauce. The staff were very friendly and certainly added to the experience. They do have some tapped beers but unfortunately when I went their line was broken, but I wont hold that against them, they still had a wide selection of local and imported beer for sale. Just buy a six pack and enjoy. As far as the general store aspect, it had lots of stuff. I only went for the meat and left satisfied.
Excellent food and Awesome customer service!
On Henderson off of Washington, this grocery store also specializes in BBQ, beer, brunch, and other good stuff aside from a typical mart. They have weekend brunch til 2p and can make mimosas or coffees to your liking. They have a few tables inside to eat and drink and can shop around if youd like. They seem to have a lot of fresh produce and all of their food are made from scratch. They have rotating beers, so expect something different on your next visit. Theyve been around for about a year now and have a great relationships with their locals and clients. They also seem to be still expanding, so expect bigger things from these guys.
Amazing food! We get the 4 meat plate with 2 brisket, sausage and pulled pork and we love it so much that it’s hard to ever get anything else. Online ordering is terrible, it’s one of those places that really just needs to handle the to-go and delivery orders in-house because their inventory is constantly changing I guess. Every time we order there’s something that doesn’t make it, like I’ve never tried the baked potato here despite having ordered it 3 times. The first time they called to let us know and subbed in some other stuff so we’d have enough food, all the other times we waited an hour to an hour and a half for the delivery to get to us to then discover there’s only enough food for 2 out of the 3 people we were trying to feed. Last night it was just a piece of sheet cake that didn’t make it so it wasn’t as big a deal, just disappointing that they couldn’t sub in another dessert or something. The brisket is soooo good and the sides are amazing (get the cream corn! 😋) also the store has some great local items and they’re all really good. Customer service here is the nicest I’ve had just about anywhere inside the loop.Update: this place is just too good to give 3 stars to so I’m changing that, especially if they’re working on their ordering process. I’m definitely going to keep eating there!
Cool old school, country store. Feels like you’re stepping into another time when you go in. Barbecue and sides are great. Tres leches a bit dry but still ok. I’d recommend checking the price on store items before you buy as some can be more expensive ($25 t shirt, $40 candles), then you’d think. Items are high quality and appear to mainly be from local vendors. Street parking is easy to find along Henderson
Easily the best sausage I ever had in my life, and I hate sausages. Tried every bbq in doordash and eats, not one other joint even comes close.
Great little BBQ joint. No long lines. Counter order in a store give an old-time feel. I ordered the two meat plate. Brisket and smoked turkey. The sides I choose were ranchero beans and creamed corn. The brisket was moist, tender and great bark. The smoked turkey was so tender it fell apart. Real juicy too. The ranchero beans was thick and tasted great. The creamed corn was awesome. If I had to say something negative it would be their tea is from a dispenser and not made fresh. That and they have plastic cups, lids, utensils, but paper straws.
Great spot in an adorable historic section of Houston.Ive done BBQ for dinner and tacos for breakfast at H&K now. Delightful Q and super delicious breakfast tacos. Awesome homemade tortillas with a nice char. Cant go wrong for any meal of the day here!
It is my emergency general store if I am hungry for great barbecue, an awesome brisket breakfast taco, coffee, or toilet paper back during lockdowns. Also so many local products.
My boyfriend and I were out driving this Sunday afternoon and decided to grab a little lunch. After some Yelping in the area we found ourselves at Henderson & Kane for the first time. The shop was very cute! It was a small dining area with a BBQ counter toward the back, and the walls were filled with grab and go food and a curation of local goods. We chose a gourmet chili oil salsa and some moringa powder, then headed back to order. We ordered a 4 meat plate with 2 portions of fatty (point) brisket, 1 portion of lean brisket, and 1 portion of pulled pork. We loved all three, ESPECIALLY the point brisket. I’m not trying to be dramatic by using a sweeping statement like it was the best ever, but I really can’t remember having better brisket in my life. The pork was unlike any I’ve had. It was tender with a punchy, peppery, and tangy finish that I can’t wait to experience again. We kept it pretty light with our side choices: grilled vegetables and a medley of sweet potato, acorn squash, and kale. Both were simple but enjoyable vegetable sides which were suitable for our way of eating. It was nice to have choices besides mac and cheese and potato salad, but if I was going to order those things, I’d probably do it at H&K!Somehow Jacob’s service at the counter outshone even the point brisket. We dine out often, and have encountered a lot of great servers. Our interaction with Jacob was perhaps our best ever. He was warm, friendly, and helpful, taking the time to explain everything for our first visit. As he did a table touch while we ate, he gave us a little bit of history about the store and some details about some of the bbq preparations. You could tell how much he believed in the store and the product, and that he was treated well at and loved his place of work. This level of care and pride was reflected in the food, which made for a beautiful dining experience. We talked about Jacob’s energy and the impact it had on us the rest of the day.My boyfriend and I are new residents to Houston. Houston has some of the best food we’ve ever had. Among an overload of great choices, Henderson & Kane has become an instant staple. Both the food and the service are worth visiting for again and again.
What started as a great idea, has blossomed into a real across the board functioning artisanal corner store. We picked up delicious big deli-made salads, locally made pickles, honey & chocolate today, will be back for the beautiful local meat, cheeses & beer. They even have a solid selection of cute pet clothes!? Tucked away in a timeless neighborhood, stop by when youre near downtown.
I love this old school butcher BBQ shop...also has plenty of stuff in thier local store to jeep you fed and occupied lol brought brought friend from over seas here so he could have so great Texas BBQ!
They have some tasty brisket. They also make their sausages in house, which is awesome. Super friendly owners.
My second time to visit here. Good tasting BBQ, got a 3 meat combination platter with Brisket, Pulled pork, and Turkey. The pulled pork and brisket are extra tender and flavorful. The sides are really fresh and the Cole slaw crunchy. They have 2 types of sauces, one regular and the other spicy. However, I did detect some MSG somewhere in their food, because afterwards I had several hours of having to qunch my thurst
My first time there I work right around the corner and just stumbled across them cutting through the neighborhood to avoid traffic. Young men working there were very nice and patient. Their bbq is awesome and hearty for the money. Very quaint unique place. Have a place outside to eat and soak up the sun. The Key lime tart was delicious as well. I will return for sure.
I love the concept, it reminded me of the places I like to stop in when Im passing through a small town. The food was good, the Tres Leches Cake was fantastic. I will be back for sure to try more of their menu.
Delicious burger with decadent flavor without the over abundant size or price. I ate the whole thing and did not feel over stuffed or miserable from a greasy meal. Quaint neighborhood hangout.
Awesome brisket!! Really tender and tasty. First visit but Ill be back.
Nice place. Enjoyed a brunch on a Saturday.
Great food and what a cute store! We will be back for snacks AND gifts!
Wow this place is awesome This place has the best barbecue Sandwiches I will be back
Awesome turkey and pork. Missed out on sausage, I bet thats great too.
Fantastic food and service. Get the Benedict torta with brisket. Its life changing. Absolutely love this place and will be back many times.
Best Tres Leches Ive ever had. Great customer service. They always make you feel at home. Support Local Businesses!
Such a fun little Gem tucked away in the Historic 6th Ward district in Houston. Very friendly staff and wide variety of goods to eat there or take w/you.
Such good food and such a pleasant staff! I brought my sister here, who has notoriously high standards for food, and she absolutely loved the turkey sandwich. I’m a big fan of the pulled pork and mac & cheese. Plus, the prices are good and the portions are plenty.
Local variety store. Not a full grocery/stop and shop but it will place you in awe of some of the selections. Organic and gluten items are available. Best thing here is the smell of smoked barbeque and Treacherous Leches
Cute store with great beer selection unique provisions. Good bbq.
Yummy breakfast tacos and the sausage was delicious! Cute store front with lots of neat local merchandise!
Fantastic bbq, same sauces from the Burrro and the Bull (old conservatory downtown), best beans in town. Expansive selection of craft kombucha and ginger beers for a nice lunch!!
Delicious ! I keep recommending this place to friends. Love Mondays special. Store is so pretty to look around. Like that is stocked with mexican candy and gourmet food
Two meat -to go plate. Cheddar and jalapeno sausage and creamed corn above average. The brisket was ok, a little dry- maybe not covered in the warmer? The take out box is too flimsy. Having to box up your own pickles, bbq sauce, onions, etc with the utensils touched by everyone was not Covid friendly. I purchased several items from the store. The plantain strips, Totopos, and salsa machis were great. I will update on the tamales, dumplings, key lime tart and scones later. I also tried the push up gelato- it was delicious. Good road trip.
Alison Cook made me try it and I was disappointed. Came on a Thursday night to try the burger and was hugely disappointed. The patty was so bland and flavorless. I wanted to like it because the meat was surprisingly tender but the lack of flavor can’t be ignored. Three stars for the store and all the local foods they offer. I may come back to try the bbq. Maybe.
Super shop, interesting foods from local chefs, lovely side yard outside.
Came in for third born ginger beer and should have stayed for the food. I’ll be back. Friendly and local!
Hands down, the best turkey we’ve ever had for Thanksgiving. Incredibly moist turkey breast that was fork tender and perfectly seasoned. Also, we picked up a dozen brisket tamales that were incredible as well. Highly recommended and will be back for more!
Its kind of pricey, but you pay for quality. Food is always amazing. Really unique spot!
Excellent BBQ - highly recommend the smoked turkey and the sausage.
The best experience when eating some good steaks. Some relaxed vibe and great customer care
Amazing little local shop. Came here for Steak Night and it was a tasty experience. They also have a great selection of wine and beer!
Went yesterday for some food I was disappointed that they didnt have boudin or ribs but thats ok because the rest of the food was excellent!! Tender brisket, cheesy sausage, and flavorful pulled pork! Best thing about the place is the customer service they made up for the items they didnt have and apologized as well. I will definitely be coming back.
If there was such a thing as a circle 10 on google, this place won! This place is very clean, aesthetically pleasing and over all very friendly. I was guided over here from Instagram and I thought, oh, might as well try this place out.As a vegetarian I recommend the bean burrito (caution it has cheese) it was really filling and LOADED!!!!! ❤️🙌🏼My husband ordered the Ranch Hand! (He said it’s to die for!) all you brisket lovers better come with an empty stomach cause they will truly set the bar for a “Texas size plate” the ranch hand included: bacon, eggs (cooked to your liking), sausage patties, toast and BRISKET HASH! 🤤A pastry bar as well as a mini grocery store!Come out and support your local Houston small business ❤️
Loved their Rexas Chili! Makes me want to get it every day.
Hidden barbeque gem with a quaint general store. Felt like we were in a small town instead of the bustling city of Houston.
Nice staff, amazing food and great choice of drinks. I love this place.
My brother told me about this place numerous times, so now it was time for me to check it and WOW, I loved it!! I went tonight for their Steak Night and it is a MUST. It was done a perfect medium, the mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts were so good and the mac n cheese just melts in your mouth!! Drink selections were great and there’s so much support for the local community!! Definitely going to come back soon and might just come every Monday for Steak Night!! Thank you Henderson & Kane!!!
Delicious BBQ, expertly crafted. I havent had brunch yet but am eager to try it! I loved all the locally sourced, handmade products they offer in the store as well. Cant wait to visit again!
This place was terrific the proprietors were very cool very helpful. we went on the day that they invited their makers to come and talk to the customers that was fantastic it was really interesting they were interesting people the food that they made was fabulous I was very reasonably priced I highly recommend you make the effort to get down there and see these folks in the art district.
Such a special gem to have in Houston! The bbq is DELICIOUS, amazing, succulent brisket, loved that the Mac & chz was saucy and not thick. We found our new favorite smoked turkey, moist and so flavorful, especially good on the Texas Toast they use for their sandwiches!Y’all can feel good about supporting this local shop that carefully curates locally made products (kombucha, juices, ice cream, horchata cold brew, coffee, tres Leches, micro greens, eggs, the best milk, an abundance of amazing local honey and jarred pantry items)Support small businesses!I’m sorry I forgot to take pictures! We couldn’t help but consume everything !
One of the best places for good BBQ and homemade desserts in the city.
Best bbq Ive had in a long time. The brisket is tender and moist. The ribs were excellent. We had the mac & cheese, cream corn kid approved. Will be going back soon.
The BBQ is fantastic, the service is friendly, and the store has a great mix of pantry basics and local specialty products (handmade soaps, syrups, pickles, etc.).
Henderson & Kane General Store is a hidden gem in Houstons historic 6th Ward. This vintage location offers excellent food, unique craft food offerings, & friendly staff. Today we sampled the BBQ, sausage, creamy corn, strawberry tres leches and a Moon Pie for good measure. All of our choices were excellent! It was a beautiful afternoon, so we enjoyed outdoor seating for lunch. Additionally, the wood clapboard homes, and pier & beam foundations in the 6th Ward remind me of my childhood.
Was referred to this place by a customer because I love hamburgers and was told this place has a good one on Thursdays after 5. Boy were they right, that burger was out of sight. Great customer service, welcoming staff and all around great experience. Will be returning soon for steak night as well as 🌮 Tuesdays.
Spot for breakfast tacos, foodie gifts and local groceries.
Such a cute place and the BBQ was fantastic. We had ribs and brisket, their sauce is so good. Staff is friendly too. They sell 44 farms beef and all the sides look delicious. We will definitely be back!
Clean, fast service, ample seating, fall apart BBQ, craft beers
Incredible BBQ and craft beer selection, definitely a go to spot in H-town!
Sells great local Texas goods and great barbecue. The workers are all really kind and helpful.
Amazing local store/ eatery. Swing on in for great BBQ and fixings, or take home some prime meat for a home cooked meal. All locally sourced products.
I saw Henderson & Kane on TV Texas Bucket list and a friend and I went today well, awesome atmosphere, service from Brittany and Jacob owners are very personable. But the BBQ is the best Ive tasted in Texas with two sides. Trust me Im not easily impressed with BBQ have traveled extensively but this was off the chain. Cant cross it off my bucket list saw to many other choices I want to try. Thanks guys. Worth the drive!
Treacherous Leches for the Win!!!!! #Carmel
Went for the steakburger Thurs night. Love the vibe here with very friendly people. The burgers we had were solid, nice char, excellent flavor. Had the H & K All the way burger with cheddar or Swiss and bacon. Great brioche style bun and fresh vegs. This will definitely be on our rotation. I want to try their sausage sandwich next and work my way through the menu!
BBQ is top notch!
We just enjoyed steak night at H&K Grocery and we were very impressed. Yes Jacob cooked our steaks exactly like we like them; medium rare; but it’s the quality of the meat that matters the most and there was no gristle or fat in these steaks. They were pretty much perfect! My wife and I highly recommend steak night at Henderson and Kane’s Grocery.
Love the ambiance! Only my second visit. Staff is always nice and food is good.
Drove an hour here to try the BBQ and was not disappointed. Phenomenal. We got a variety of all the meats. The bark was delicious on the brisket, and the jalapeno cheddar sausage was the best Ive had. It was all delicious but the pork ribs were our favorite. Will definitely be back!
Get ready to step back in time (and actually enjoy a trip to pick up grocery necessities or a snack) while getting a baked good, dinner, or handmade gift. The owners have a mission and vision and are solidifying it over time - my favorite part that H&K is historically cozy and neighborhood-oriented. Perhaps their story is posted in the building; if not, it should be. More signage by Buffalo Bayou park or making this a stop on an official Houston tour would create foot traffic. ⭐️⭐️P.S. Last week I ate the best chocolate chip cookie in my life at H&K’s.
Delicious barbecue and a wide selection of curated meats, cheeses, drinks, snacks, and more.
This is truly a hidden gem! Monday is steak 44 night, take it home or have it cooked there. The brisket, turkey, mac and cheese, beans, and potato salad are all great choices. Enjoy!
