It was so nice during the pandemic shutdown when New Sleazons had lines down the street to stroll in here to find full shelves and hardly anybody in the store. The one thing I will say now though is CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE. Ive been getting moldy packaged items. Stale boxed items etc. they are NOT great about their return process either. I spend nearly $1,000 a month at this place and do not appreciate the hassle. I do like that this place is small and clean.
Wonderful customer service! I had a very pleasant conversation with a cashier by the name of Lauren, she was efficient and very friendly and definitely deserves some sort of recognition! Ive been shopping here for quite awhile, and the service has always been great, but recently the workers have done nothing but impress me. I think good customer service is one of the most important things for a business, and might I say, Market of Choice has some GREAT service. Will continue to shop here and hope Lauren gets the recognition she deserves :)
Prettiest store in town. Didn’t shop though so I can’t comment on pricing. Likely similar to Whole Foods.
Great store with a large selection of both organic and conventional products. Covered parking, a clean store, and lots of room in the store. A really nice deli selection of freshly prepared and made to order take away. Excellent meat department, nice produce and they pound out products from local, women owned, and BIPOC businesses. Support Oregon companies!
The greatest market of all time. Where else can you pay 1/3 more for what you cant already afford? Its seriously amazing. I love it.
Excellent deli sandwiches and prepared foods selection. friendly and accommodating staff.
The store is decent. It’s expensive which would be cool if the quality was consistently good. Unfortunately I’ve purchased a lot of stuff on the shelves had been expired, which I’m sure I could’ve taken back, but that’s not really the point. The registers are constantly understaffed, so there’s often a lot of waiting. That being said, their prepared food from the is actually amazing.
MOC had one of the largest selections of local diet specific foods, and their bakery is out of this planet. You certainly cant argue with local dairy free and gluten free lemon cheesecake, responsible and sustainable sushi, or kimchi fried rice with baked sesame tofu....you simply can not.
Ethan help me pick my first beer out here in Portland (got the number 5). Originally from the MileHigh CO & had to give a shout out to him and his amazing customer service. Came in later tonight and wasn’t too sure what to get. Noon swiped me off my feet with his passion for wine. He definitely isn’t afraid to show off his knowledge to a new girl in town. Thanks for the help gentlemen!!!
Top notch food. Nice people.
I read your review Steve, and I’m so happy that you pointed that out! I gave this location the same rating you did. I’ve been feeling the same way about the “culture” of the store lately. Nowadays I just buy rolls of toilet paper, and talk with Bob selling Street Roots newspapers outside. He’s awesome!I absolutely admire the products at MOC, and a few kind hard-working employees and cashiers! But if you’re attuned to it, you can definitely feel the pretentiousness in some of the employees. There’s one young female cashier with short dark hair who makes me nervous sometimes 😬 Her demeanor towards female customers seems aggressive, but not with male customers. She may be a newer employee.I think if MOC stays humble about their great products, they’ll do better as a business during these times. No one likes pretentiousness and ego.
Many gluten free choices...like Ice Cream Cones!
It may cost a little more, but you can pick up a few items when you look for what you really want. It will be there :-) Great Space easy access to get in and out. Extremely amazing people working there!
Collete at the sandwich deli is Awesome!!!Her salesperson savviness, willingness to go out of her way to make it the way YOU like and personableness makes the price worth it, but mostly makes one want to come back and try them ALL...thank you Collete!!!
Great deli lunch place. Great selection and my fav fire roasted pizza slices.
The staff was really rude Not one staff member went out of their way to help me find an item when I asked for help i was told after break
James at meat department is really wonderful . He is always so friendly and helpful ! Gave us some great suggestions about cooking our fav steak:)! He is the best !!
This was, unbelievably, my first trip to Market of Choice and it was a little bit like a grocery store paradise. My friend was raving about it and couldnt believe Id been in Portland for 15 years and hadnt been three. Who knew? Somehow this gem never got on my radar. Not only is it beautiful, the selection of high quality items was massive and very well laid out. Theres a large organic offering and a beautiful deli and wine section. There is an incredible selection of cbds, supplements and natural health items that Ive previously had to find at online stores. The friendly staff was genuinely glad to be helpful and happy to recommend products they loved. A word of caution...if Id had more time I could easily have unloaded my entire paycheck in that store! Its like Disneyland for foodies. Theres much I dont yet know about this place simply because of the time constraint on my visit but I can tell you Im looking forward to some serious aisle browsing in the near future to take inventory of all that is available there.
Great food choices in their ready to go sections.
Great selection of healthy food options without the over pricing that takes place at similar grocery stores.
Going shopping there now! Cant wait!
I really like shopping at this place! Their selection is great and the prices arent too high. It is a darn shame that the store is surrounded by homeless hell though. Park in the garage under the store so you dont get accosted by the local spare changing homeless people.
I love MOCs. I choose to pay the extra money for the experience. Ive been to this particular MOC a handful of times, and everytime I leave disappointed. For every 1 employee that epitomizes customer service there are 2 pretentious, entitled employees spoiling the entire experience. Samantha in the deli, and another girl with a shaved head working the wine booth are the only consistent friendly, engaging employees I have encountered. The rest (mainly cashiers) are the opposite of what I expect from this chain.
It took 25 mins make 2 sandwiches.
I feel lucky to live so close to a great store. The shelves are filled with interesting choices. The best Thai Hot Sauce! Weekend deals, samples, tastings. The Deli case, the Cheese Case, among others are outstanding, the Salad Bar beats Whole foods, beats New Seasons, eat your heart out! SO much help. From Dave who manages the cashiers, to Jenn Krug who befriended me on the first day, her advice and cooking skills are things I can count on when we meet. Thank you Dave and Jenn, Im voting for a 2 dollar raise for you. Your worth way more. Happy 2020!
Normally I get excellent service as a frequent shopper from the first day it opened and previously shopped at West Linn and South Burlingame. I had to call today as a young lady cashier did not enforce social distancing and rung the next customer who then stood 6 inches from me which exposed me to any germs as she was talking. I was bagging my groceries in a bag i brought from home. As a senior and minority this is unacceptable. Lets hope I remain well an you change her behavior. Thank you for listening.
Great produce and quality products at a reasonable price
DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN ORDER CATERING HERE!? Hello! Seems obvious to me now, and I feel silly I havent been doing it for ages! Getting catering to carry out during a holiday weekend and a pandemic is no easy task, but when I contacted Market of Choice they went above and beyond to make the BEST wedding food for our beach wedding. Guy Winslow, youre THE man! Seriously cant thank you enough! You worked with me on custom recipes (All Vegan btw) and made 3 holy moly tray of delicious corn on the cob (skewed even!) for us to take to our beach wedding! Every guest commented on how great the food was, so I know were not just biased! We took some pretty photos of the food on the beach that Ill share once I get them! Thank you a billion times for the best service, pricing, and food for our dream come true of a beach wedding! So glad we found you!
Totally safe grocery store with complimentary gloves for use throughout the store...besides all the great deli, produce, & local meat options
Excellent selection of goods, but slightly higher prices. I like them far better than New Seasons.
Wow, this is such a gorgeous store! I love the salad and hot bar for lunch. They also have a beautiful produce/meat/cheese/bakery (so basically everything)! I walk since it’s close to work but they also have a parking structure so it’s very convenient. Every person I’ve encountered is always pleasant as well.
Jennifer is the deli is AMAZING. Best customer service I’ve seen in years. Awesome sandwiches made by her. Will keep coming back for her!
Great staff always friendly. Good quality like all moc. Who doesnt like there food and wine. Of course they are pricey. So what they have a fun bakery to look at and sometimes they make mouse cookies.
Great selection of anything and everything youd need. Good amount of organic products as well as healthier options. How this only has a 4.3 on Google is just wrong. Such a great place!
Excellent selection of fresh produce. If you are small specialized food makers you are in for a treat. Yummy in house pastries. Higher prices than the usual Freddys.
Isnt it wonderful when a food market is more than just a grocery store, but also a destination. This Market of Choice is such a place. I love to go there and eat lunch, as well as buy items to take home. I wish I lived nearby. Great market!
Lots of good food, tons of fresh and unique foods, it is really nice. There is a little sandwich shop inside. Great place
Market of choice is a place that I would shop at if I live with in your neighborhood theyre a great take from a major grocer. Great food, good service, wide selection for an intermediate grocery. I would shop there regularly if I lived within their territories
Unfortunately the closest grocery store to me. While I will say that I appreciate the selection and dining area... I feel like I’ve been ripped off pretty much every time I make the stupid decision to eat from the hot/salad bar. The employees are pleasant, but the prices are not.
I can find almost everything that I want in this little store. The employees are always friendly and helpful. I also notice they value customers time, because they pause other work to checkout customers. There are some tradeoffs. There is an organic-first selection, and this leads to higher prices. Part of this is caused by the smaller footprint, and the store has prioritized organic foods. I prefer more conventional options. Still, I return because of the many vegan options, convenient hours, and welcoming service.
Overall a good shopping experience for the price paid. Footprint of this location is a little tighter due to the urban location but they have everything the suburban store in Cedar Mill carries.MoC can also be a good stop for freshly cooked breakfast, lunch, or dinner with their extensive deli / Cafe.
In a healthy competitive landscape of premium upmarket grocery stores, it’s nice to see another local Oregon outfit expand their foot print. This store serving the inner east side with a well rounded selection of groceries, wine /beer, deli and vitamins & supplements. I have found about 90% of my needs on a regular basis.
Love the bistro/smoothie/coffee counter! I literally come to shop here daily, spending way too much money, because I love interfacing with the staff. Nice folks working there like Beth make my day better. I havent been super happy with the way the neighborhood has been changing/gentrifying, but the coffee zone at MoC has provided a welcomed, human interface.
Great spot for fresh groceries and good conversation. My friends and I were in from out of town. Danielle and Gavin were both super helpful getting us all the fresh grub we needed and gave us great pointers for sight seeing in Portland! Danielle even drew a map, she rocks!!!
This is by far the best grocery store in Portland. 5 Stars! It is extremely clean and always well stocked. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. All of the products are top tier and delicious. Great choices and prices are fair for the city. They have a covered parking garage with ample space; it’s so nice not to have to fight for a space or worry about getting hit like at TJ’s or New Seasons. The best part: their bakery! Kudos to all of the bakers because it’s incredible. I see them hustling and keeping everything pristine and want to give that department a big shout out.Market of Choice is def our main grocery store in the city now. Can’t wait to shop again.
Just had your punkin enxhiladaz,DELICIOUS
The hiring manager, Melissa, here at this location was not pleasant at all to meet. Melissa definitely represented how Market of Choice treats their employees here, with disrespect and no value. I scheduled to meet with her and she showed up 10 minutes late and approaches me asking rudely, “We’re meeting today?” All I could respond was “Hello! Are we?” Melissa claims that she treats people the way she wants to be treated after being in the customer service industry for 16 years or more. Melissa mentioned that she has worked with Market Of Choice for 2 years and didn’t know your company’s core values and responded to my question with “I don’t know, you can look it up online.” Every question I had for her was completely brushed off and answered short. The energy as soon as you walk in feels negative and fake. I definitely do not recommend shopping here and better off going to or any other local grocery store or chain than Market of Choice because I don’t want to consume that same negativity and put it into my body. I even called Melissa’s manager and mentioned my encounter with her. His response showed and passed onto Melissa and the reason why they never followed up. Ya’ll don’t care and it is obvious.
I worked with Krista B. The manager of the floral department in May my small, socially distance, vow ceramon (my large wedding in August had been cancled) . The flowers were one of the most important parts to me; I love plants, I have flower tattoos for crying out loud, AND my mother owned a flower shop as a child and I played there constantly. Ive always had a great experiance with the bakery for special occasions so it was a no brainer to go to Market of Choice for my flowers. I love them.Boy, I was sooo wrong. I should have gone to costco and had my mother make them. All I needed was a bridal bouquet and a boutonniere. The manager Kristi was very nice and attentive, she took my order over email. I assured her I didnt have high expectations for variety, white Roses were fine, and Id love some greens. She asked me about my colors and I said pink, but no worries if that wasnt possible. Price range was set at $200.She didnt follow up to confirm the flowers she had been able to find, like she said she would but I didnt think of it.The day I came to pick them up, oh my god, my hear sank. Th bouquet had been made 3 days before (!!!!!) and it had 6 Roses, a few hydrangeas (which are notorious for not holding/drinking water) some eucalyptus and some berries for color. It was already very wilted and saggy. The boutineer was close to 7 inches long and 4 inches across. It was HUGE. We found out later it wasnt wrapped improperly and there were no pins to pin it to my grooms shirt (we needed 4 just to get it to stay). When I went to check out it was exactly 200 dollars. I dont know what I even paid for.It was such a headache and a huge disappointment. I was almost in tears, trying to juggle this on top of covid, and not being able to celebrate with my familyWe had are wedding and it was still beautiful, but seeing the flowers in our pictures makes me cringe every time :(
It is fairly new and modern. Reminds me of whole foods and new season. Connects to a bar and fast food nearby. Up the balcony you can eat your food, has a coffee shop that also sells smoothies. Neat and clean, friendly vibe from the workers and the place is easy to navigate for groceries. Since it ia close to downtown the price is pricey which is understandable, the location is accessible through the bus and parking is available in the parking garage below. Been open for almost 5 years now, has been doing quite well.
Literally some of the best fried chicken I have had in a while. Whoever is running the hot bar is doing a great job, best whole foods style self serve I have had in years. Great friendly staff aswell!
Great hot and cold prepared food selection, frsh wok bar is a fan deal. Cold wines, beer like a bottle shop, friendly and knowledgeable staff in all departments. Local farms and fresh produce.
Engaging staff, lots of local and unique products, clean store, & so many options for a smaller grocery store.
Not the place to go for regular shopping as they dont carry a random assortment of things you would expect from a market and prices are high. Fantastic high quality local foods and good ready-to-wear food bars.
Prices are high but the customer service makes up for it. A+++
Has everything & reasonably priced. Grab a bite & enjoy it in the balcony area overlooking the store. Restrooms are up there as well. They had the best pure natural products & better priced than New Seasons, Whole Foods, etc. One of the supplements I compared was $5 less! Great deodorants & makeup too. So clean, orderly, & inviting.
I love this store. Employees always seem happy to be there which leads me to believe they are well treated. Great deli, produce, meats and cheeses. One stop shopping at its best.
Such an incredibly beautiful store and I love that it’s in the neighborhood. Parking is easy underneath the store and always lots of available seating to have a nice lunch and see grocery shopped or before you shop. Or maybe you’re not shopping at all and you just want to stop in for a bite. Incredible selection of salad bars hot and cold and a variety of other ethnicities to choose from. The coffee bar is excellent as well and I’m so glad to say that it’s not Starbucks. Highly recommended
Market of Choice has such interesting food and products. Gourmet quick takes (croissant sandwiches, soups, and more); extensive cheese department, meat dept., deli, spirits, produce, bakery. Looking for non-dairy for your coffee? Try half & half almond and coconut milk--from refrigerated case. Keep an eye open for Dr. Bronners BAR soap. Small seating area to eat lunch on site. Smoothies. Parking. No loyalty program at this time.
I was particularly excited to learn that they would be roasting Hatch chilies. I called to find out if the produce department could meet my needs. The person who answered went way beyond expectation to find the answers to my questions about a bulk order. Then when I arrived at the store to enjoy the heady fragrance of chilies roasting (taking me right back to New Mexico memories), the young woman doing the roasting was so accommodating and professional, I could not be more pleased.
Ridiculously high prices never will I go back
Best beer selection around
Solid, everyone there was amazingly friendly.
Prices here are steep, but they reflect a certain type of neighborhood that has quickly been built in this area. The juxtaposition between homeless camp up the street and this veritable cornucopia of expensive and fresh grocery goods is pretty striking. They even have a poke bar if you can afford the $14.99 a pound pricing. Got a hankering for something? Theyve got it for you, but you have to be willing to pay the price. I hope the workers are well paid so they can afford to shop here. Free parking below, just go right when going down 11th. Check out the breakfast burritos in the morning. They have like 5 different varieties. Which is something you can say about pretty much every item at Market of Choice. No trash on the staff though. They seem pretty great.
Not a bad store but way over priced on common items. I can see paying more for specialty items but to charge 5 dollars for the same brand of hotdogs I can get anywhere for 1.49 is too much. They are a 2 minute walk from my house and are always a last resort for regular shopping
I love shopping here for specialty items. Their selection is enormous and their prices arent to bad either. I especially love the gluten free selection that they have here, I have a gluten allergy and Ive finally been able to have all of my favorite foods again. All without breaking the bank! Their prepared food section is certainly worth checking out as well
In the past six weeks or so, there have been four incidents where Market of Choice on Belmont overcharged me for items on sale. It happened again Tuesday evening. White peaches are on sale for $1.99 lb, The cashier charged $2.99 lb. I told her of the error and she confirmed it by going to the white peach display. The pricing error equals a 50% overcharge. I assume that these mistakes are unintentional accidents by Market of Choice, but I do wonder how much extra profit they are making in their inaccuracy. What also concerned me was the cashiers somewhat lackadaisical response to the problem. When I asked her how this was going to be corrected for everyone else who purchases the peaches, her response was I noted it to management. When I asked how long that would take to be corrected, her response was Im just a clerk. I dont make the rules. A poor response. In case MOC needs to confirm that Im not just making this up, here is the receipt information:Lane #4, Checker #27, Trans #132, 7/30/19 @ 9:49 PMI urge Market of Choice to be more accurate in their sale pricing. The customer shouldnt have to be the accuracy police.
Lovely store. It reminds me of natures/wild oats back in the day. An excellent selection of high quality foods, but that doesnt mean they dont have more budget friendly options available. A great addition to the neighborhood overall.
Wonderful selection of all the best money has to offer! Fresh produce, great selection of meats and cheeses an excellent variety of beer & wines from all over the world. Pricey but you get what you pay for! Also great food buffet, take away or table and countertops, to eat & drink( all) those Delicacies!
This is one of the cleanest shopping groceries I have seen in the Portland area. From merchandise to gourmet food, bakery and coffee, this place seems to have it all. I also like the sitting area upstairs. It is comfortable and relaxing. The open rest room is a plus and world class.
We got our wedding cake through the bakery at this Market of Choice and I can honestly say Ive never heard so many compliments on a basic sheet cake! Even though it wasnt anything super fancy (which they also do), our cakes were still given a great amount of attention and detail. Not only did they look beautiful and taste amazing, but they cost way less than other stores or bakeries.
I dont usually leave reviews. The store is fine and the staff are super friendly. But the poke was inedible. I bought a couple pounds for new years. Threw it all out.
This place surprised me. Their other stores tend to be expensive. This one not so. They have a great deli, I got a hamburger and it was delicious. The people in the deli are very friendly and so are the baristas. My only negative was my cashier. Didnt engage, didnt even say hello. Only thing she said was do you need a bag.
Large, well lit, very clean market. A bit expensive, too. Selection of goods is very extensive, but comes at a cost. One stop shop. Use this place as once a Month stop to get hard to find items.
Clean, bright, cheery space with WONDERFUL products and kind people on staff.
It’s my neighborhood store and I love it.
Wow! Great beer selection. I love New Seasons, but everything here seemed a little bit fancier for the same price. This is also the only (and I mean only) store in town with yellow cake and fudge frosting. Want chocolate chocolate chocolate? Go anywhere else. Want a choice? Come here.
The pizza they make towards the back of the store is some of the best pizza ever! Great wine selection.
They had no one manning the sandwich counter... at noon. Waited 20 minutes for them to realize this was the case, at which point they began making the sandwiches of the three people who had put in their orders after me. Came here hoping for a quick sandwich on my short lunch break, but that was emphatically not the case. Their food is good though.
An excellent grocery store with kind and helpful salespeople. Great product variety, great hot bar and deli. Decent coffee. Sub par burritos.
They had Hatches Green Chiles rated by heat. This is hard to find in the northwest but i do have to roast the hot ones myself.. best turn on my fan
Nice neighborhood store. But, good luck getting help in the bakery. Many times I can wait for 10 minutes and nobody shows up. Meanwhile I lock eyes with other employees who do nothing. This is clearly a management issue. The meat department is consistently helpful. Then deli is hit or miss. But the bakery? They need a buzzer is a bell fire customers to ring.
First visit to this beautiful food emporium! Everyone was friendly and helpful except our checker. Wrong person to be the last customer contact. Needs some additional customer relations training.
My new favorite Portland grocery store. Everyone is always extraordinarily friendly and helpful. Though it is not a huge market they manage to have an exceptional selection of items. The only thing I have trouble finding there is a good variety of organic citrus in the produce department. However, not only do they have hard to find items, like Ripple plant based milk, but the music and lighting, and the vibe in general always make it a positive shopping experience. The underground parking makes it easy to get in and out, too.
Small but nice hot bar /deli. Prices are good to average. Everything is very clean. Ive only dropped in for snacks or lunch but if I lived in the neighborhood, Id shop here.
Lots of yummy goods - upscale-type grocery store. Really great selection of gluten free items from local independent gluten free bakers in the bakery section. Lots of interesting meats to try.
Great selection of both conventional and organic and local options. A lot of the time the organic produce is very close if not the same price as conventional. They also have a ton of great prepared foods available.
Nice store but limited selection. Great meat and fresh produce but you definitely PAY for it.
Check your expiration dates!!! Got Frigo parmesan cheese here that turned out to have been expired and still on the shelf a month past the best by date! 90% of the products are vastly overpriced. Youd think for double the price on the cheese they could make sure it isnt expired. Gossipy, vacant staff. Have had the checker toss glass bottles into a bag. A go to if it happens to be on your way and you cant go anywhere else. Otherwise go anywhere else
Went in for a birthday cake and the staff was extremely helpful. Helped me pick the perfect one and even wrote a message on it. It was so good and everyone loved it. It was my first time in and it seemed like there was quite a bit of good stuff in the bakery/deli. Also I noticed some products that I usually get at PCC or whole foods was a couple bucks cheaper.
