Over the decades Ive brought in a variety of guitars to get them properly setup, repaired etc. I will go nowhere else, the crew at the 12th Fret are expert luthiers and just exceptional people. They really listen to the customer, and are nothing but professional. I live an hour away and wont even think of going anywhere else. Customer for life!
I went to see about having my mandolin repaired, and he seemed very knowledgable.
They have worked on several of my guitars, from re-frettiing, setups, pick- up installs etc. and the quality has always been top tier. Highly recommend 12th Fret. Great customer service, great work. Thank you guys.
Simply stellar guitar repair shop in SE PDX. Had a small snafu with a guitar but the owner was more than accomodating at solving and fixing. Would highly recommend to those looking for luthiers in Rose City.
Have had a couple guitars worked on here and this place has consistently surpassed my expectations.
I was referred to this great shop by another shop to service my banjo. The crew was awesome. I’m new to the banjo and these guys provided some useful insight, resources, and did a solid job restringing and tuning the banjo. They’ll be my regular shop for my banjo needs.
I bought a 1976 gibson ripper bass and unfortanely the whole thing needed to be refretted. The care and attention to detail was overwhelming, you cant even tell that its had work on it. They gave me options, were informative, knowledgeable and truly I would never trust my future fret work to anyone else but this shop. I cant recommend them enough.
Customer service is second to none. They communicate well and do top notch work. Ill definitely be coming back the next time my guitar needs some work done 👍
Was able to have an electronic issue with a guitar sorted/fixed extremely quickly for a good price. Would definitely recommend.
This place has been doing top-notch work for decades. You wont find a better shop.
The 12th Fret always takes great care of me and my students. Highly recommended for repairs, and super friendly service!
Ive taken guitars here for over 20 years, and never once received anything but exceptional service. They are the best around, no question.
Great service. 👍 wonderful selection. The staff is knowledge filled with helpful info.
With Portland having lost so many beloved local businesses due to the pandemic, the 12th Fret is a local icon that is thankfully alive and well. I dropped by to have a friends vintage Kramer set up along with a recently acquired Les Paul.No grumpy guitar techs or elitist attitudes here. John and the 12th Fret crew go above and beyond in providing exceptional knowledge, expertise and remarkably generous customer service.Wether a year of quarantine has inspired you to finally learn to play or youre a veteran musician waiting until you can gig again, These guys are the best.
I got a basic acoustic setup and my guitar plays so much better now. These guys know their stuff and are great to deal with. I’ll be going back for sure.
Great shop! Even though they specialize in repairing high end acoustics; they can also handle the shredder guitars as well. I bring both my EVH Wolfgang and my 5150 Kramer replica there for work on the Floyd Roses. They do an amazing job. Very trustworthy and talented luthiers.
Pricey, but they made my bass play very nice. Using that set up as a kind of template, I will probably start doing on my own set ups from here on out, but if I ever need more serious work done on an instrument I will be back
Best place in Portland to get your instruments fixed. PDX icon...
Experts at repair & consignment of top notch string instruments
Ive been going there for decades. ALways top notch work. The guy at the front desk is great. I always feel welcome and my needs attended to. Im sure I could a lot of those things, but why? They are going to do it better with all that experience. Years ago they did a amazing job fixing a bass that looked beyond hopeless as in almost completely broken off headstock. 25 years later, you cant even see the repair. Highly recommended
Did an excellent set-up on my tele! Super helpful in taking through the issues I was battling. Its the little things that really show your working with people who are there to take care of you and your instrument--they adjusted the height on my volume/tone knobs, something I noticed was causing a little rattle, but forgot to mention. Excellent, knowledgeable service!!
My go-to for all guitar work. Always amazed at how well my instruments play after a visit and the staff are very nice and helpful. Cool guitars and amps in the shop to noodle around on as well.
Simply the best..
Decided to go with this place for a much needed setup, upgraded nut install, and fret re-crowning. They did an excellent job, the price was fair, and were very kind and transparent. Highly recommended!
I went in with a cracked acoustic guitar. The man at the desk (I didnt get his name) looked it over thoroughly and talked through what he would do if he worked on it, and also told me that in his opinion the crack was unlikely to get worse and it was probably only worth fixing for aesthetics or if I was planning on selling the guitar. It was really wonderful service, quite a bit of thoughtful attention without expecting a payout. The kind of thing that lets you know youre talking to a really honest craftsman. Will definitely come back if I have more instruments needing attention.
My go-to shop for everything guitar.
I just had a simple setup done on my guitar. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and provided great suggestions based on my needs. They were also quiteite fast. I was prepared to wait a few days to a week or more but they turned it around the next day (I dropped it off at closing time).Great place. I highly recommend.
Brought my MIM Telecaster into the store for some long overdue fretwork and these guys did a great job! Ive had this guitar since I was a teenager and its never had any fretwork or even a professional setup. Needless to say my frets were heavily worn from years of playing and going into the shop I wasnt sure if they were had any life left in them. The guys in the shop were really friendly and gave me an honest, no-bull assessment - they didnt try to sell me anything I didnt absolutely need. So I dropped my guitar off with a pack of my preferred strings. After a about two weeks I got a call letting me know my guitar was ready, so the next day I went to pick it up. Im really happy with the work that they did! The frets are level and smooth, and even though the setup on the guitar was completely wacky when I dropped it off (I had just installed a new nut and bridge at home) it came back with a excellent setup that feels great. Its like a new guitar! I really appreciate that these guys were honest, friendly, fast, and meticulous even though my guitar was a relatively inexpensive and common instrument. Its a guitar that I love and has a ton of sentimental value to me, and its never felt or sounded this good before. I will definitely recommend these guys to anyone I know in the area who plays guitar, bass, or any fretted instrument. True pros! Thanks guys!
I have taken my guitars and basses here about 8 different times and everyone here is awesome! Ray always sets my basses up perfect and is a super cool guy. I had Russ install some pickups, preamps, and switches in one of my Mayones bass and it looks and sounds amazing! And John is does a great job of setting up my acoustics. I would definitely recommend these guys if you need some work done. Their prices are comparable to everyone else in town but they do the best work in my opinion. I wont go anywhere else. Thanks guys!
Quality work at acceptable prices. Recognized as the default shop for acoustic repair in Portland. Good selection of used instruments for sale as well. They didnt tease me too much about my Ovation, so thats a plus.
These guys have repaired many of my Martin guitars over the years. Some had extensive damage. All repairs were done to my satisfaction. They also have set up some of my new guitars with great results. I would trust this shop with any guitar work whether its restoration/repair or a setup on a new instrument.
Wow! Fixed my bridge alignment problem in just a few minutes and didnt charge me anything. Another shop told me they would have to re-drill the post holes!!. 12th fret forever, very impressive.
Great place for most stringed instruments, but call first. Very nice people work there. Also they have some sales of guitars, banjos, strings and other related items
Thanks for all the repairs!
I brought in a vintage mandolin I just acquired that had a buzzing string. The staff was extremely polite and helpful! They checked the bridge placement, applied a fix to the nut that fixed the issue, and even threw in a new battery for my clip-on tuner all free of charge. Ill be stopping in again soon for strings and any repairs as this place totally rocks.
Everything you want in guitar repair shop. Super friendly staff. Highly-skilled. Stellar work. Ive brought at least 10 guitars in there over the years and have always been delighted with the outcomes.
This is definitely THE place to go if you need professional work done on your acoustic instruments. Knowledgeable staff
They give good advice and arent trying to get your money
Great place to bring a guitar for repair. They are knowledgeable and fair.
Best guitar repair in town. John, the owner is a great guy. I’ve repaired many guitars there. I do music for work, highly recommended
Great work done by nice people for a fair price. Ive had lots of work done here over the years and always come away happy.
The staff did an amazing job with my guitar. They were honest, price was reasonable, and my guitar plays like new again. Thank you!
Great shop, very knowledgeable & friendly. I have taken 2 guitars to 12th Fret and am very happy with the work performed. Special requests were handled perfectly. I will be taking my other guitars there in the future.
They were able to do a repair of the electronics on my Tobias 5 sting bass when no other shop would touch it. Thanks for getting me back in business so quickly! I would trust them with my gear anytime!
John was honest, friendly, and helpful. They do great work and have been around forever.
John was very patient in working with me, and made sure my guitar was setup just right. There was never a rush to get me out the door, and he didnt quit until I was satisfied. Great customer service and quality work! Id definitely recommend the 12th fret.
I have literally been going to these guys for over 30 years. An avid guitar player and tone snob I have found no one else in town that match the competence, quality, or passion of this shop. I own a wide range of instruments (electric and acoustic) and these folks are adept at handling even the most challenging jobs. The setups are always spot on but they are also very willing to perform follow up tweaks free of charge even after I have taken the instrument for a few days (although Ive rearely needed to do that). On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give them an 11!
I took in 2 guitars to be set-up, and I love the result. I have to drive hour for these guys, but wouldnt go anywhere else.
The wonderful guys here really helped me out with an old garage sale find of a guitar, a Harmony Sovereign whose neck was misaligned, that needed fret work, that had bridge and nut problems. They took good care of me, and were more than reasonable on price.
I snapped the neck right under the head-stock of the Breedlove Passport Acoustic guitar. The craftsmanship of these guys far exceeded my expectations! If didnt know it was one, you would never guess without thorough inspection! I thought my guitar would never sound the same, but these guys brought it back to its original sound, and I couldnt be happier with the work! Do yourselves a favor, do NOT take your guitar to an amateur repair shop, take to a place where its going to get the best care and to a group of guys who know what theyre doing! Take your damaged, even destroyed instruments to the Twelfth Fret Custom Guitar and Repair Shop!! You will not regret it!-Tyler Stewart
Ive brought in over 20 guitars for work here, from set-ups to repair, they always do a great job! Any time I buy a used guitar, I have it set up and checked out here. I would highly recommend these guys to anyone who loves guitars, both acoustic and electric!AAAA++++
Great service, great luthier. I cant say enough about this place. Great guitars and accessories for sale. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Set up the action on one of my fg-150s. Lots of help and information given without charge. Ill keep going back!
Ive been to the Twelfth Fret a number of times for varying reasons, and every time I go they earn my business all over again. Helpful, knowledgeable and committed to things being 100% right. The bad review posted here leaves me scratching my head--not at all my experience. These guys are top notch!
Very good customer service and good price on repairs
I brought my 98 US Double Fat Strat to them for a general set up and nut replacement a couple years ago and my guitar still plays better than it did when it was new! Love these guys!
An amazing place to get great knowledge and repairs on your stringed instruments.
Brought my 52 Tele RI in for a set up and some wiring. They did a great job. Very nice and pleasant to deal with. Thank you!
I want to publicly thank John and the guys at 12th fret for the wonderful work they did on my 70s Music Man Bass. The neck that I had was hopelessly warped with way too much relief and no adjustment. John worked patiently with Ernie Ball to get the right solution for my bass. It now plays better than new. Thanks again 12th Fret.mark prey
I make the journey from out of town to PDX for all my guitar repairs at 12th Fret. They really are the best. Great people, expert repairs. Been bringing my guitars here for over 15 years. You will not be disappointed.
I dont normally post reviews, but wanted to thank these guys for their work and knowledge.I brought in a 70s L6-S copy for a set up and they had their work cut out for them. Picked up the guitar a few days later and it played great.A few months later I came in to buy a new saddle for an acoustic I was practicing my own set up on. I was told that I should keep the old saddle and was given some great advice on how to set it up myself (since Google searches yielded a wide variety of opinions). Afterwards, I was able to do the set up and was excited to have a previously uncomfortable stock acoustic guitar that now suits my playing style - all done myelf. They are a very friendly shop, are super approachable for general questions, do great work, and seem like they enjoy what they do. Thanks!
Ive been taking my guitars to The 12th Fret for 12 years. Their prices are fair, and they do the best work in Portland hands down. I have gotten quality work done at other shops in PDX as well (notably Portland Fret Works) but nothing compares to The 12th Fret. If you want quality work done on your instrument, take it here.
These guys are the best we are lucky to have them 💚
Love these guys - best guitar setup/repair shop in town
Excellent luthier skills. Top quality repairs and setup
Theres a reason the parking out front is oft blocked by tour busses. Love these cats.
John was super helpful about setting me on the right track, and he saved me some dough. ALWAYS appreciated!
Staff is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help. Highly recommend john for guitar work!
I have taken many of my guitars and basses here. They are personal, interested in doing the right thing, and good people. These guys represent true Portland quality craftsmen!
Excellent service and very friendly.
Always have my guitars setup here! Best setups in PDX!!!
Im sorry I did not write this earlier. I have a Martin D-18 which had a twinked neck so the action was off quite a bit and made it difficult to play so I took it to the 12th Fret for repairs. Im sorry I dont remember the person who did the work but what he did was remove the neck completely, re shimed it and then replaced it back, amazing! the work was superb and my guitar never sounded or played so well ever, I think since it was new in 1967. I highly recommend this shop, you will not be disappointed only very happy! my only regret is that I did not bring my guitar in earlier.
Very, very kind staff. Helped me so much. Also they have good prices, fixed a broken headstock for 50$
Best guitar repair shop on the planet!
These guys do it right and make it right every time.
The best
One of the best guitar repair shops in Portland.
I used to rant and rave about how good this shop was until I took my guild d62 in for a side crack repair and missing binding .Expecting a quality repair I was very disappointed in the crack repair [ I could have done better work myself ] Needless to say I wont be recommending them anymore
Fixed my banjo well. Would return for more repairs.
These people made the guitar that I fell in love with and for that I will always be grateful.
Best in town
Professional and friendly
These guys rule!!!
Excellent.
