Absolutely amazing service!I just bought a ukulele from here and this is my first time ever playing an instrument.Jason was really thorough in helping me pick one out and he even gave me a mini lesson while I was in the store. He made this experience so pleasant and even more exciting than it already was - you could really tell he loves what he does.
Artichoke is a wonderful, small venue that makes for excellent events where musicians and the audience both benefit from the intimacy. Attending a concert here, and seeing universally talented young performers playing almost all original compositions made me feel good about the future for the first time in a long time. Refreshing for the soul.
Great customer service. There were a couple of instruments with dead notes though.
This is a great place to buy stringed instruments. The staff is very helpful and you can get lessons and connect with groups.Great local music resource.
Megan Cronin - Awesome violin and fiddle teacher!!!If you’ve been playing violin/fiddle for a little while (that is, you can find your way around first position) and you’re ready to make music with others at about the same level, then you should check-out Megan Cronin’s weekly group class at Artichoke Music; Americana for Violin. Megan is a patient, knowledgeable teacher. The classes are relaxed and fun. She starts each term with a fresh batch of very accessible tunes. Megan is always organized and well-prepared. She provides melody and backup tracks to practice with between classes. We don’t just work on melody, but also chords, style, and a little bit of improv too. Normally, the class meets at Artichoke Music in Portland,OR. Lately, the class has continued on Zoom. Even on Zoom, I’m having a lot fun playing new tunes and making progress. I highly recommend Megan’s class.
Love, love, love this place. Been going for years. If you want the most personable music store, search no further
Wonderful place. The shop area is a little cozy, and with so many gorgeous instruments around, I felt the need to watch my step. While not enormous, the selection and price range had a lot of variety. The service was top-notch, the staff friendly, informative, and very encouraging. My friend had never held a dulcimer before. A gentleman spent 10 minutes showing her a few things, and now we are talking about getting her one. There is also a small cafe and music venue. When I visited, they were near closing, so we didnt sample the cafe, but there was a person doing some setup or maintenance on the stage area, and the audio sounded excellent. Clear, rich, full sound that didnt overpower the room. Look forward to coming back.
Was very nice
I went here last spring to take the beginners mandolin lesson class. There was another person returning to take the full beginners class the second time. The class was focused on him picking up where he had left off and making me feel. Expected to know what he knew after already going through the full class. Fortunately I did not pay the full class fee and only paid the amount for the one day. As I was obviously not going to come back. I would recommend that anyone coming here for the group lessons do the same.
Wonderful place to buy new and used guitars and ukuleles- great advice and suggestion when I purchased my daughters equipment as she got more serious. They will also do simple repairs in store.
People here were very friendly and helpful. They have a nice selection of mainly used acoustic instruments including banjos, guitars, violins and even a harp or two. Prices seem quite reasonable.
I really didnt know anything about Mandolins but wanted to get into it, these folks didnt make me feel terrible for not knowing anything at all and helped guide me through the selecting process and was very honest about things they didnt know about. They spent some time just playing each instrument I was interested in just so I can get a feel of how things sounded. I would recommend this place to anyone.
This music school features top-notch teaching and a really sweet community. The newly remodeled space means that every class has a pleasant room to meet in.Ive taken over a dozen classes (they are in 2 month terms) at Artichoke Music, with 5 different teachers. I especially swear by Anne Weiss for voice/harmony and Adrian Martin for guitar (and also Playing Well with Others, which welcomes all instruments). I never thought of myself as being especially musically gifted.... but with patient and skilled teaching, I have gradually improved to a level that I didnt ever think I would reach. Thats solid intermediate not anything fancy, just enough for my own personal enjoyment. My husband has taken Banjo and Ukulele classes here. The Irish Music class sounds great from down the hall. So many cool choices!
Im sure the store is lovely. But I paid $5 to perform one song at their open mic and get berated on stage by their sound guy for trying to plug my mic in...in front of the entire audience. No thanks.
A great place!
Could you please list your hours correctly? Or if they are listed correctly, would you please honor them? I was excited when I moved to SE and heard about Artichoke, but every time I try to go to the storefront on Powell, youre closed, even during your listed hours. This has happened three times now, usually in the afternoon/evening. I understand closing early when things are slow and theres only a few minutes left, but being closed around 5 when your listed hours say youre open until 6 is frustratingly dishonest.
Everyone there is a friendly music nerd that wants nothing more than to help and encourage other musicians, no matter how silly their questions. I look forward to trying out their events when Im less broke. Theyre a nonprofit, theyre really wonderful.I went in for the first time a week ago and fell in love with a bouzouki which I had never seen or heard of before. My fiance and I ended up hanging out in the store chatting with the guy working there that day for over an hour, amazing musician, lovely person. I came back today because I was completely unsuccessful in tuning the thing. They tuned it for me and taught me some tricks for playing it. Highly recommend. They are randomly not open though, nonprofits have their quirks.
Cafe Artichoke is wonderful! Check out all the live music they offer!
This is certainly the heart of Portlands music community. It is not just a music venue, classes, shopfront and more combined together. Artichoke is the throbbing heart ad the center of a vibrant music community. The passion for music shines through the eyes of all the people involved in artichoke. It is so welcoming, come along and immerse yourself. :)
Love the artichoke. Where I bought my first Uke and took a good Uke class there as well. Everyone working there is knowledgeable and friendly. And they have a move selection of instruments, books, accessories, etc.
I feel like they couldve picked a more progressive, spiritually enlightened sort of vegetable to better describe thier establishment. i understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but i think the stores spirit animal has more of an eggplant type of vibe
Friendly folks, always ready to help. And a supporting non-profit.
A not-for-profit community music school and acoustic music shop. Whats not to like about Artichoke music? Amateurs and pros perform in the listening room attached to the back of the shop. Full Luthier service is available.Make this place a regular stop just to look at whats new. Incredible teachers, students and staff make this the center of the folk and acoustic music scene in SE portland. This place is a treasure!
Great local music store
I love going to Artichoke on Thurs. and Friday nights. Good music, good community, good times. Isnt Portland great?
Nice staff, but things like strings and such are generally more expensive than elsewhere.
Had Ray refret my 71 Fender MusicMaster Bass and fret-dress and set-up my Martin HJ-28. He did a great job. Had price quotes from at least 5 others in Portland. He beat all of em. Ill happily go back.
Great music community!
Amazing music and wonderful deals on musical accessories
Great people, great gear.
Great place!!!!
