Wow what a fantastic guitar shop. The finish on my Larrivee had cracked after it was dropped, and Guitar Tex was the closest shop in Texas that could repair finishes. Its a four hour drive from where I live and I dropped it off. I got a call a week or two later from Logan Mask, where he went over the details of the repair and what would be involved, and provided an estimate. Fast forward a couple weeks and the guitar was ready. I was able to line up picking up the guitar with another matter I had to be in San Antonio for. They kept their shop open about 30 minutes after closing to accommodate me, which was a huge favor (my meeting in San Antonio went WAY longer than expected). The bill was exactly as estimated and the repair work was top notch--way better than expected. The first two photos are before, the third is after.I really cant say enough about these folks, they are class. Will be returning if I need any work on any of my other guitars!

Took in my entry level Martin guitar for a bone saddle upgrade and lower action. They took their time to listen to what I wanted before I dropped it off. The man gave it a good look over and told me they could get it done. I picked up a guitar that played like a much more expensive guitar along with a detailed receipt of the specs. I dont think it could get any easier to play with 0 fret buzz. These guys are top notch and a gem in San Antonio.

Guitar Tex is what a guitar shop should be - unassuming, friendly, helpful, and they didnt treat me like a walking dollar sign. Not once did I ever feel like a customer, and the atmosphere is so pleasant. My buddy and I played for about an hour and saw them treat everyone the same way, regardless of their level of knowledge. Great place, I will definitely be stopping by again.

I took my Martin D18 here a few months back for a binding repair (they were the only ones in town that would touch my guitar for that repair; I respect that kinda confidence). They did a great job on the repair, and it was much cheaper than I anticipated. I was in the neighborhood for a Martin D28, and thought of this place so they got my business there, too. Super nice staff and theyre very, very knowledgeable. Always shop local instead of those chain guitar shops. This is a great shop and Im lucky to have it near by!

These folks are so awesome! I was gonna drop off my guitar for a new nut and saddle, the man (I don’t remember his name sorry) showed me what needed and what did not need repair. Gave me great advice on what I may not want to invest in for this particular guitar. Could have sold me world as I know nothing much. THEN when he found out I was a trucker and that is my only guitar, he instead did the repair on the spot while I waited for a very fair price. He said he couldn’t send me back on the road with nothing to play. I know where I’ll be getting my next guitar when I drop this one off for the final repairs.

I have a rare bass, a late 1980s Kawai with a graphite neck. One of the tuning keys stopped turning. Having such a narrow post and the small diameter hole in the headstock of the graphite neck presented replacement problems and would have relegated the bass to staying in a case, unplayed, without replacement. I spoke to John at Guitartex and he felt that they would have a tuning key to fit. so I carried my bass down to their store. John went through all of the stock of tuning keys in the store and it did take a while but he found a tuning key that matched the existing gold keys. Logan, the luthier at Guitartex, had to enlarge the post hole to accomodate the threaded sleeve that secures the key to the headstock and I had to leave the bass overnight. You cant even tell that my bass was repaired.Ive been playing my Kawai bass twice a day since I picked it up on Friday.Ive had best friends that have run music stores and always had the best service in their stores. John and Logan treated me as if I was their best friend the first time I was in Guitartex.

I get the paranoia of the mask thing, but that was no reason to act like a mad man. All I wanted was to drop my guitar off for a repair I didnt even need to go into the store. This is by far the best place in town. I am surprised that San Antonio is not boiling over with small shops like this; however, I am glad that Guitar Tex does exist. The staff has always been friendly and instruments are everywhere. There are no sales folks pushing you to purchase, and one can simply enjoy being among great instruments whilst making the decision to purchase or not. I play the banjo, so I usually purchase my instruments from the builders themselves. Even so, I always ensure that I adorn my banjos with a great strap from Guitar Tex as they have a HUGE selection.

I am not a musician. I love music and have a bunch of kids. Lucky for me some of my kiddos are musicians. My son is starting guitar classes this fall and Gus Wanner at Guitar Tex was an amazing help. He took time to really listen and understand what my sons actual needs and desires for a guitar were. No high sales pressure, extreme understanding of what our needs were and never once did he try to sell us something that was way beyond our needs. This place is great. As a dad getting instruments for budding musician kids I cannot recommend this place enough. You will not be sorry for shopping here. BTW, I have two daughters that play the Ukulele and one that plays the violin so I have been to other stores looking at instruments. While the other stores I have gone to were good I can safely say I never felt as comfortable with my purchases as I did at Guitar Tex

This place is amazing. I have a Martin that I bought with my graduation money that I gigged with in college and is like my child. The neck began to separate from the body a bit and the action was really high so I shopped around to try and get it fixed. Everyone in Austin wanted $350 to do a neck reset which involves drilling holes in the fretboard. I decided to find an authorized Martin service center and this was the closest one. Thank God I found it. They adjusted the neck and the action for about 80% less than the others wanted, drilled no holes, and finished in a week. I have fallen in love with my guitar all over again thanks to these guys. If you have a Martin, dont trust it to just anyone. Take it to these guys. Friendly and knowledgeable. It was worth the 2 and half hour round trip!

Yes, there probably is a time and place to visit one of those national music store chains for items. Guitar Tex is not that place. It is a small business where it will not take long to discover the owner has decades of expertise, a staff comprised of experienced musicians who listen to find out what a customer needs. Here it is not about the bottom line, but about relationships and a shared love of music. You may not find rows and rows of instruments, but the selection you find are hand-picked and carefully chosen. Definitely worth checking out. You wont be disappointed!😉

This is the only shop I trust to work on my guitars...John Thurston is top notch. The owner Mark is a wealth of knowledge and a straight shooter. And, John Michael is almost an institution in San Antonio...any musician thats been around the SA music scene for a while has purchased a guitar or amp from him.In this age of Big Box music stores and on-line sellers it is a comfort to have a place to go and quietly sit and check out the latest Martin. No hard sales pitches and having questions answered by someone who actually knows what their talking about are the qualities that make this shop worth supporting.

Ive been meaning to write this for a long time. I have a 1950s Martin 0-18 that has been abused in the family for years. I took it to a Salt Lake City Martin authorized guitar shop previously and I spent a few hundred on the repair which was mostly a little glue and the cracks got worse over the years. I happened to live in San Antonio when I finally decided to fork over the money to preserve the guitar. Mark worked wonders, asked if I wanted a cosmetic fix as well as functional. I declined. To my surprise everything was fixed from the bent nut, fixed crack and peeling bridge. Not only was it fixed but Mark added some small braces to the sides. The braces were the same wood type as the sides and after the fix the guitar sounded better than it ever had in my possession. All this work was done for a lower cost than the Salt Lake City dealer charged. It wasnt fair, I still feel a debt to them for getting such an amazing deal. They tried to sell me on a brand of strings in their shop, I declined for the DAddario. When I got the guitar they had put the shop brand on. This would be a complaint but the strings sounded dang good. They were quite knowledgeable. A guitar they recommended back then I am still planning on buying because of their expert advice. Again I cannot say enough good about how they saved my priceless heirloom.
