Poor fresh fruit selection, place looks run down. No meats, refrigerator broken apparently. Way to support the troops. We certainly got priorities straight. Rude woman working at the self check out. Selection is mediocre. Its 2021, time to expand, this is a big military city.

I do not shop at commissary anymore some products are great prices some are not? and you all talking about the food are tax free do you know if you check each item you purchased theres a surcharge on it. at the bottom total you will see the total surcharge like $11 or $10 yes it say free tax but surcharge is like tax and also at civilian grocery we dont pay tax for food we pay for plastic and glass deposits like milk water bottles juice or soda that is $.05cent each but food outside doesnt have tax but little more expensive.Good day everyone

If you are looking for a great little home town style grocery store Commissary Naval Base San Diego is the place to go!! They have all the greatest name brands, and great deals, and everything is tax free!!!Commissary Naval Base San Diego beats most major grocery stores in the area for price and quality produce. It must be subsidized for military personnel. Then to get more savings tax free groceries!! It is great!Note: Bag assistants work for tips. So... i guess the Tax savings could go to the friendly bagger who takes your groceries to the car for you. Isnt it great tough! See so small town, the grocery assistants will take your bags to the car and load them for you. They are so helpful!!!

Commissary staff actively seek out coupons to help shoppers with things they are ashtray buying instead of paying to buy other products because there is a coupon.

Ive been retired from the Navy for almost a year now. I dont go to the commissary as often as I used to, but its great being able to stop in there and grab some fantastic sushi for lunch I need it right there at their tables. Their meat selection, awesome produce, and great deals for all of us military both retired and active duty, make this a fantastic location and facility.

Arguably the best Commissary I have been to States side. The quality of the produce/ fish/ meats is something to rave about! They carry a lot of unique and international items I would not have expected to find in the species, candy/ chocolates and baby categories. This was the first place I had cotton candy grapes and Im always on the lookout during their season! Also, the fruit selection entirely is pretty large and all around yummy (you will always find great mangos, kiwi, strawberry and peaches to name a few!). I love this commissary; if stationed here, as you can find anything and everything you need grocery wise w/ out a void to supplement with outside grocery stores (whether you live on/ off base).

Cons: can get busy on weekends and before holidays. Restroom facilities BELOW average in condition and maintenance.

You can only shop here if you are military. I find the prices are not that spectacular. You can usually do mostly better on sale items at other stores. Stop by they have good deals on cereal and they do accept coupons. Some of the coupons are actually in the store and are for military only.

One of the better commissaries I have been to over the past decade, the produce selection is great along with the meat department. The seafood is incredibly fresh compared to the other local grocery stores. The service is also better than what you expect when going to any military commissary. The bagger at my check out lane was overly friendly and made small talk when the computer had to restart to complete the check out. As always the prices on base were better than out in town and no sales tax is a pretty good perk. In and out in 25 minutes for a weeks worth of groceries.

George from the meat department really went out of his way to make sure I was satisfied with a meat purchase of a prime rib roast his knowledge and and experience was able to make me see the difference in what I should look for what I wanted. I only go here if I can get in during non busy hours. So like NOT between 1500 and 1800.I wish they had better produce but overall this place is huge.I try to just pop in, sticking to the left side of the store where the fruits and veggies are, and get out.The self service option on base is nothing but a headache. Much easier just to get in line since they keep so many lanes open unlike vons.Service is traditionally ok. Mostly Filipino women who are the wives of service members. You can also find a few ethnic gems here in the ethnic isle like UCC Coffee from Japan.

Food is often on the edge of expiration and even know its supposed to help cut cost you can often find almost everything out in town at a cheaper price and usually at least 4 weeks of longer shelf life. Plan your trip through this commissary based on your needs and how the groceries are stored. While facing the commissary, parking on the right side will give you access to the refrigerated sections and you can walk through the meats and dairy in the rear of the store. The commissary is becoming less and less of a useful alternative to other retailers. Prices are no longer as competitive, for example a single 1lbs pack of mozzarella is the same price as a two pack at Costco. Similarly, meats are nearly identically priced to those at for profit stores like Sprouts and Vons. In addition, choices after becoming fewer with a heavy emphasis on prepackaged processed meals. The commissary probably still makes sense OCONUS or for single service members, but not necessarily for families in high shopping density areas. Finally, staff remains the greatest weakness at the commissary. Good luck finding someone when you have a question, worse yet if you have an issue. During or most recent visit we tried to find a person to deal with people bringing in pets. When we finally found someone, they were too afraid to deal with the issue. There is a difference between a pet and a service animal and it is easily discernible with ID, which this pet, and I stress pet, didnt have. Pets do not belong in a supermarket.Overall, we see less and less reason to visit the commissary.
