This review is based on purchasing a new Trek Roscoe 6. For context, Ive built simple bikes and been riding single speeds and fixed gears since early 00s. This was my first purchase of a new complete bike from a local bike shop. I was deciding between going to a shop or buying direct. The reason I went with Summit is that I wanted to experience buying a new bike from a shop. Maybe if I went with a higher priced model, I wouldve gotten a better experience. Based on that, I would rather buy direct. I understand theyre reason to get you to buy things that go along with the bike, but it seemed like that was the focus. Nothing wrong with that, we all gotta make a buck or two. I was just hoping theyd focus more on getting me fitted to my new bike rather than upselling. The folks working there were nice and helpful, but maybe I was just expecting too much.BTW, the bike is awesome and dont regret my purchase at all. They arent bad, they just dont stand out in customer service.

We were in the market for some bikes and decided to check out this place! Michael was super helpful, in helping us try out different bikes, styles, sizes. Although I didnt walk out with a bike today, Id definitely go back! I did walk out with some bone induction headphones though. I would recommend this place for anyone starting out.

I’ve been to different locations of Summit Bicycles a couple of times and my experience has always been the same. They just try to sell you stuff! Expensive stuff that you don’t need. If you are not 100% sure what you want to buy, they will most probably take advantage of the fact. Services are overpriced. I got tricked into paying $60 for the placement of new tires on my bike, which I can do myself but the guy asked “do you want to try these tires”. At first I thought it was great they were letting me try the tires before I buy them. Oh boy was I wrong. If you are willing to drive to Santa Cruz - Epicenter is a great bike shop where a tune up is $40 cheaper than at Summit :)

I took my super 73 S1 to Summit to be built as the bike needs assembly. Its and expensive bike and didnt trust myself to build the bad boy. At summit they were super nice and friendly. the cost was 120 (which is around the same price other bike shops quoted) to build the bike but they also made sure to have it tuned and test rode it for 3 miles to make sure it was safe. They had it done within the day for me. Highly recommend.

This is a tough review to write because Im such an adamant bicycle activist and all for supporting your local shop. As a result of the pandemic bike shops everywhere have experienced a huge increase in demand. People everywhere are biking more because its one of the home main user activities thats pandemic friendly. Im a person who loves bikes enjoys fixing my own bike. so when Im at a bike shop Im typically only buying parts. Right now if you go to summit cycles youll wait in line for 30 minutes to an hour. And if youre not looking to spend over $1,000 on a new bicycle at the exhausted mechanics can barely give you the time of day to work through a part list to place an order. So Ill be buying my stuff on-line. Until we get to the other side of the pandemic. In short if you need bike parts or a bicycle try and buy it online. Its going to be a lot easier and more friendly customer experience. And when we get to the other side of the pandemic give these guys a shot. I think theyll go back to their normal upselling selves.I hope to revisit this review sometime in the future and update it to more stars.

Purchased a rear mounted bike rack online that said it would be delivered to the shop for pickup within a week. I heard nothing for a month so I reached out to customer service, after two weeks of calling I finally got a hold of someone. They offered no apologies and asked if I wanted them to order the rack. I thought that would be obvious by the $75 they took from my bank account a month and a half ago. When I asked for an explanation for the delay I got plenty of attitude from the customer service rep on the phone so I decided to cancel my order. I will not be supporting this shop moving forward.

My husband and I had been looking to buy bikes for a couple years and within the last few months we really started looking. Anyways, we had little to no experience on what we should be looking at when buying a bike. When we came in we started looking around and Chris came over and was very throrough when answering our questions, which I had a lot of. He sure knows his stuff. We were very thankful to have had Chris there he spent a lot of time with us and never rushed us. We ended up buying two bikes, a couple helmets, and some other accessories that I wanted.I really felt like he was really looking out for us when making this big purchase.Plus, his boots were sweet!

UPDATE 12.28.2018:Thanks to Ian Christie for addressing this promptly. Thanks to Mike for reaching out and for outstanding customer service at the San Jose store. I greatly appreciate the effort.bought two childrens bike. not a good experience with bad customer service from a kid with a bad attitude. also sticker price on one of my kids bike says $299, but got charged $319. When asked about it the kid didnt understand basic math and was trying to explain to me that getting taxed twice is normal practice... shaking my head. the manager explained something about old sticker not being replace with a new sticker and the mark-up in price was because of tRump tariff. thats basically false advertisement and its illegal. tempted to return the bikes and take my business elsewhere.

Very disappointed with the shop work at Summit Bicycles and even less impressed with the service. I took a bike in for a tune up and they charged over $100 and barely touched it. The bike case back dirty and squeaked just like when I dropped it off. I also witnessed someone get their bike back with a flat tire and the mechanic told the customer to go home & fix it themself. I’m planning to buy a new bike this summer but it won’t be here.

There is a bike shop with a good selection of parts and a repair shop as well. I went there with a broken bike, and the repair shop people dropped what they were doing and quickly put my tire on. They were very helpful, quick and competent. I also got good advice on how to proceed with my own repairs. I bought a saddle there for a very competitive price compared to online.I went there again later to tune up my bike. I bought parts and had the drivetrain adjusted. The repairman was helpful and friendly and seemed quite competent. My complaint was that switching gears didnt work as buttery as it used to. I paid around $200 for everything. I ended up being not too happy. The gears still dont switch easily. I returned and was told that I would have to exchange everything because some part of the switching mechanism was worn out. I think that this is not the case. In addition I would have expected that for a repair for this price they could have put some oil one the chain but they did only the minimum necessary.

*Crooks* Went in the other day to get a new pair of gloves. I figured I would help support the local bike shop instead of buying online. As I am looking, I overheard the shop guy telling him that if he wanted the shop to replace the tube it would cost $15 and I had to stop the guy. I told him I would replace it for him and teach him how to replace the tube himself as well as buy the tire levers at no charge from me.He said that is a way better deal. So outside we went with his new road bike. I showed him how to change it as he did it himself in 10 minutes. Yeah I taught the guy in 10 minutes how to change his tube and your greedy guy said it would be a day for $15.If you are gonna offer that service, get real on costs on charge $3 in labor, you know it is nothing to change a tube or a tire. Dont be greedy. Because you got greedy I bought my new gloves at REI and saved $10 plus I got points for my next purchase. I will not be back and I will never buy a bike from you. Get your prices right.Gave this 5 stars so it shows up first you crooks.

Went to the trek bike shop to get either my rim straightened or purchase a new one. The guy at the counter greeted me and asked what I needed. I told him the situation and he decided that I needed a new rim. Instead of him telling me he didnt have the rim in stock, he tells me that Im heavy and probably needed a heavier duty rim, which of course was more money. As insulted as I was, I tried to keep my cool. The rim replacement was about 60.00 dollars for the rim that I had. The heavy duty one was about 150.00 They had already lost my business with the original comment. I told the guy I was going to get some pricing from other bike shops. As I was leaving, the guy tells me not to ride the bike with that rim or your going to taco it meaning bend it in half. I took that personally because I am Mexican. I just hope they make enough money on product alone, because their service is terrible and they should be ashamed of themselves for the people they hire. Went to spend money and got insulted instead. Dissapointed.

This store is OK. The staff is usually nice, but a few are a bit stuck up. They lean a bit towards selling you hardware, but not as much as other places. This place used to be at another location, and I used them for all my bike needs because I knew the mechanics and the staff. Once they moved here, the entire staff changed, which is a bit of a bummer. Having said that, Ive done some serious maintenance with them without any problems. I went in there today to see if they can fix a few items on my daughters boyfriends bike that he got from his grandfather, yes I know it was an older specialized, but I was gonna have a new chain put on, ( because after we brought it up for him to ride to work the chain broke, so hes been walking 2 hours to get to work every day. Any ways, they said yeah we can do it just bring it in, they put it on the bike holder and started going through it, I need this and that, this and that, you need all these new, which it did, but I just wanted to at least have a chain put on.. yet they kept trying to upsell everything, a full overhaul of the cables, the brakes.. I said I dont want to put that much into it since his grandmother is gonna get him a new home in a few weeks, I asked how much to just have the chain put on, 25 for the chain and 20 dollars labor, ok, do you want it done today.. yeah, were from out of town there for a couple of hours.. the rude mechanic shook his head and said he couldnt do it until Monday.. it literally takes 15 minutes to put a chain on.. they tried to sell me a chain breaker, but Im gonna pay $25 dollars for a tool Im gonna use once.. sad to say I was gonna buy a sweet trek I was eyeing since Ive been looking for a new mountain bike.. theyre rude mechanic and constantly trying to upsell parts pushed me away from dropping 6-700 dollars.

It has been 7 years since purchasing a new road bike so I definitely needed to be reeducated before making a sensible purchase. Upon entering the store I had the good fortune of being greeted and assisted by Joe Coraldo. For the next 1 1/2 hours Joe patiently answered all my questions and provided me with the reeducation that I sorely needed. He matched me with the Domane SL6 Disc, which was exactly the perfect bike for my riding style. He provided a bike for a test ride and told me he would also bring his bike in on the weekend for me to test ride. This was absolutely a no pressure presentation. Joe is extremely knowledgeable, professional and personable. I did not purchase the bike that day feeling I needed to do some homework. Well, it turned out to be a no brainer and I returned a couple days later and with confidence (thanks to the education I received from Joe) purchased the Domane SL6 Disc. Personally, I feel there is nothing out there that can match that bike along with the Trek warranty along with the service Summit bikes has offered.

So I have a Trek mountain bike that I took to Asia for two years while working there, unfortunately the (salt water) environment there took its toll on some of the hardware on the bike. I brought it in to due a quick tune and have the hardware (mostly standard nuts and bolts) replaced.Service guy calls me up and says that the pedals would likely need to be replaced as they dont sell parts for them and the springs are pretty rusted... I said fine, the pedals are Shimano $85 half cleats. Went to pick the bike up today, new pedals installed $85, another $100 over and above that and the bike and all of the hardware on it hasnt been touched let alone replaced. WTF?Ill be calling these guys up on Monday to explain exactly what they did for $185 plus tax beyond screw in some pedals that I could have easily done myself. Ill edit this post if they actually did something worth my time and money, but at present Im scratching my head what that even was....And looking at my handlebars just now my front-facing reflector is gone. What ??

Brought bike in for free maintenance. Rear wheel ripped the derailleur off during the next ride . I was told I crashed and damaged the derailleur after the maintenance was performed. I did not. Either Trek uses bad parts, Shimano 105, or the maintenance may not have performed a correct rear derailleur adjustment. The repair tech also assumed I wanted to upgrade my derailleur and wheel cassette, kinda pissed me off because it more than doubled the cost of repair. Too many red flags on the repair shop work and eagerness to take more of my money. I will try another Summit Bikes store for my next service.

I’ve been a Trek Bicycle Store/Summit Los Gatos customer for six years and just bought my third road bike at the Los Gatos store last month, a new Madone. Their price was hundreds less than the next best price in the South Bay and even better than Internet deals, plus you get 10% off in the shop for a year after purchase and free tune-ups for the life of the bike. Beyond the good value though, I’ve tried other shops and keep coming back to the San Jose and Los Gatos shops, for three main reasons. The employees are fair, they’re knowledgeable, and they don’t have that bike shop arrogance (i.e. you don’t have to be Cat1 with shaved legs to get their attention). I spend a fair amount of time in both shops and see this good customer service consistently, so I hardly recognize the negative impressions some people are writing in these reviews. A tip I learned, though, is how thankless their work can be with demanding customers and everyone always wanting a discount or free service or part. So whenever I go to Summit or Trek San Jose I try to be respectful, like calling ahead if I need a repair to make sure its a good time to drop by, or occasionally bringing treats for the sales guys and mechanics. In turn, they know me by name and are always willing to help when I’m in a pinch. These guys set the standard as far as I’m concerned.
