The BackCountry is an awesome shop! The employees are always helpful and they carry a great inventory! Thanks again to the team at The BackCountry for always being friendly and answering questions and helping me keep my bikes healthy. Your team is the reason I will make the drive from Reno just to have service done on my bikes!
Great people! Backordered an item from them and they had clear communication the entire time. Would order from again or stop in if I ever head over the pass
I called the store to arrange for rental ski gear. Everyone from the Alex who answered the phone to Mike (manager/owner) was awesome. They were accurate with their information, timely with their responses and delivered equipment that worked perfectly. All the assurances made over the phone were delivered without a hitch - very smooth work processes.
Normally a big fan of the backcountry, Ive been shopping there for about 7 years. Ill still point people that way, but they really screwed up on this one. I bought goggles back in December. In 2 uses the lens was peeling away from its glue (thats a smith issue, not the backcountry). I went to warranty the lenses and The Backcountry said 2 weeks. 2 weeks turned to 3...4.. Very little communication from them. I kept calling, multiple times Ive been told theyll be here next week Theyre here we have the shipping confirmation. Here I am, 5 months later and a whole season gone, still no contact, still no lenses. Pretty weak
Very friendly staff and awesome gear selection. Dont forget to checkout the large selection of guide books!
Wont rent backcountry gear unless you provide proof of taking a course or having a guide. Said it was mostly because they didnt have very much gear, but that doesnt make sense for same day rentals. 🤷🏻♀️ Go to the other mountain sports shop on the other side of Safeway instead.
I adore the Backcountry in Truckee and TC! Mike and the crew go above and beyond to provide top notch customer service in all regards. Its a fantastic locally owned, everything you need for fun in the outdoors, one stop shop!.
Mike and Patrick helped me find the mountain e-bike of my dreams! Everyone that works at The Back Country knows all there is to know about mountain bikes and the customer service is out of this world. Really stoked to find a local bike shop with down-to-earth, kind people. Thank you so much for going above and beyond to set up our bikes!
These guys are top notch.Very knowledgeable, fast, kind and a pleasure to be around. My mt. Bike has beverage looked or performed better.Thank TEAM Back Country!!!
Great store with very knowledgeable staff!
These guys were the only shop IN THE COUNTRY that had what I was looking for! They were nice and helpful, and mailed things to me quickly. Awesome shop. Will buy from again for my backcountry needs!
Went to this shop to check out some EMTB. I was immediately greeted by Mike who took the time to educate me about mountain bikes and e mountain bikes. I was very impressed with the customer service and quality of their inventory selection. Ended up buying two bikes and will be back to pick up some additional gear for the bikes. They provide free lifetime maintenance on the bikes they sell which is a huge plus. So glad I came into this shop and would highly recommend this shop to everyone. Thank you Mike and Patrick for the amazing customer service.
Bought our backcountry skiies here! Staff was experienced, laid back, no pressure, friendly and they go out of their way to make sure each customer is happy.Buying my next MTB here in the Spring!
Helpful even though they didnt have what I needed.
Good dudes, tip in beerCheers
The Back Country has an amazing selection of gear plus an extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. They do an amazing job with tune ups and repairs. Anyone there will talk to you and give you advice or tell you about their favorite trails/tours. I have been coming to this shop for years and never had a bad experience. Support local businesses!
Great experiences purchasing my 13-year old twins first full-suspension mountain bikes (one on each day). Both days we came in, Patrick helped us and gave us 100% full attention and service throughout the process of figuring out what we wanted and then choosing the accessories. Patrick was great with each of my kids, he was enthusiastic about riding and made them each feel welcome. We also interacted with a few other employees while there and found everyone to be of the highest caliber of service. We look forward to working with them over the years as we bring the bikes in for the complimentary tune-ups. They also encouraged us to come back whenever we have questions on how to do stuff or need repairs. I highly recommend this shop in Truckee!
Went in to just buy some new boots this last weekend but ended up spending significant time with Mike talking about BC gear. I decided to buy newly needed set of gear (incl skis, bindings, poles, skins) directly in the shop rather than online to support this local business, as I really appreciated Mikes experience, knowledge, great advice and patience. Ran into a bid of an issue with skins the following day but they went out of their way to make sure that it was taken care of right away and made up for it. Highly recommend this store - you cannot get this experience, level of personal valuable advice, friendly employees and pleasant store atmosphere (incl a few super friendly dogs) anywhere online.
Worst customer service ever, brought my bike in for a tune up, picked it up and it was shifting worse than before. Brought it back. Was told it was done and went to pick it up only to find out the mechanic had broken the brake lever while test riding the bike. They kindly offered me a $120 XTR replacement for a part they broke. I am happy to pay for the same part as I understand stuff happens but that was not an option. They could have easily offered to use one of the demo bike brakes while they waited for a new part but the answer was no. It was either a $120 XTR part or no bike. I am leaving for Sedona for 2 weeks tomorrow and I am not completely screwed without a bike. Thanks guys.
Fantastic staff and products! Seth and Kiera (sorry dont know how to spell her name) were knowledgeable and friendly and helped us find the best product for us. Highly recommend coming here for your adventure needs!
Great store, friendly staff, great selection
Killer staff! Spoke to a staff member who was super cool and helpful with providing me some insight on local rocks and routes.
Good inventory, super helpful even when buried with customers and work! Had the 10 speed rear derailleur we needed. Thank you!
Great local shop. Top tier selection, super helpful staff, ethically minded ownership. Lots of bike shops in Truckee, this is where I go.
A little bit of humility goes a long way. I have had terrible experiences working with this shop and prefer to avoid it at all costs.
Super helpful staff, great local knowledge, helped me out to build a great back country ski rig. Love that they sell stuff on consignment
I am giving one star because of poor service. Had a tuneup and new tires put on my kidsbike. Valves stems are crooked. Cutting into the rim. Great staff! Nice and friendly. But I feel since I didn’t buy the bike at their show, I received cut rate service. I will not be returning to this store.
Rented two nice bikes from The Backcountry to ride around Donner Lake. I didn’t catch his name but the guy working with us was very helpful in making sure our needs were met. We bought a bike rack; he helped us put it on our car and get the bikes on securely. He really went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. Thank you! I would definitely recommend going there for your outdoor gear needs.
Helpful staff with nice rental bikes at reasonable rates (full or half day)
Top notch shop!! Everyone at Backcountry is enthusiastic about what they do and are always eager to help. The mechanics are excellent.
Hands down one of the best gear shops Ive ever been to. Ryan, helped me out and hooked me up with fantastic new back country gear. He was patient, polite, professional and really knew his stuff. Whats more is the whole staff helped us plan our back country route. They are all super knowledgeable about the sport and the area. Highly recommended!
Just good people with good products trying to help you get out on the mountain.
Super nice owner. Experienced, knowledgeable, patient and kind staff. I went in to look for and try on splitboarding boots. The know-how and help I received was amazing.
Excellent shop in all ways. Great knowledge and selection
Not sure if I entered a bike store or a Biden campaign office.
I bought my first bike at The Backcountry because I received a nice deal on a premium ride. I bought my second bike from them because they proved to have the most down-to-earth, knowledgeable, and friendliest staff I’ve encountered in the Truckee/Reno area. In addition, I got another sweet deal. I know there are a number of good options for bike/ski/outdoor gear in the area, but anyone shopping around would be foolish not to drop in and check out their high-quality inventory and helpful staff.
After tons of apprehension with the price point to get into backcountry riding the Backcountry Staff helped me through the whole gear process. Every member of their team was extremely helpful and honest with what would work best with my riding style. They were extremely patient and helped me setup up all my gear on premise after purchase. I would HIGHLY recommend this shop for anything backcountry as they are truly the best in the Greater Lake Tahoe area. Take this info from a person who went into every other outfitter in the area as well.
I bought my first great Mtb here and they were not pushy at all. Would definitely recommend to any looking a good new or used bike.
I am super impressed with The Back Country. The staff is friendly & knowledgeable, having the end goal to help me have the best athletic / sports experience. I love how its a local company, and the owner Mike, is a caring + enthusiastic expert about Skiing, Snowboarding, Cycling & more! Thank you The Back Country!
Super friendly staff that showed great flexibility and knowledge. The owner Mike gave us advice on good trails and had his staff drive us out. They were really friendly and flexible in terms of pick up location and time. A great experience overall and great bikes for mountain biking.
First bike I bought in Tahoe was from here! The guys put me on a rowdy horse, great trails, and plenty of big smiles. The shop is fully stocked with knowledge and product for all seasons and sports. Always a reliable spot for gear, fixes, and info!
Excellent service! I just dropped by to pick up a new cable housing and cable on my way back from Northstar. They got the bike into the workshop, diagnosed the shifting issue, replaced the cable housing and cable, made some adjustments and I was back on the road in less than 10 minutes. Im sure part of my experience was good timing, but the level of service I received was WAY above what I was expecting, and my shifting is silky smooth!
Located in the middle of new town Trukee this store offers anything you could ever need for outdoor activities. With a excessive amount of used and new bikes for sale in the summer finding a new bike shouldnt be hard at all. I went in about 3 months ago looking for a specific bike, to my dismay they did not have it in stock but were willing to order it within the hour and would assemble it and adjust it for me immediately once arrived. Held off on the bike and came back to look once again and found that the owner was very very pushy and trued to sell me and my brother very beat up rental bikes for way over asking. Other than that service was very pleasing and cant wait to see what the offer for winter sports.
The crew at the Backcountry in Truckee are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I recently bought a Kona Process from them. The build and tuning was spot on and they took the time to set it up just for me. The thing I really love about this shop is that everyone that works there actually lives the outdoor lifestyle that they promote.
These guys have gone out of their way numerous times to help out me and my family and we have been more than pleased with the service! Favorite outdoor shop in Truckee. The staff goes above and beyond and it shows. Excellent!
Undoubtedly an essential business for the Truckee area. Amazing staff, products, and vibe.
Ive been coming to The Backcountry for the past two winters. These folks are the real deal, especially if you are into splitboarding/backcountry skiing. They have an excellent selection of skis/boards, boots/bindings, avy gear, packs, and anything else you might need to get out there and earn your turns. Mikes employees are knowledgeable, friendly, and stoked to be helping people out--true soul skiers.Ive also had work done on my skis at their shop (as well as their sister shop at Squaw, Mikes). Binding repair, hot wax, tune, edge repair... etc. All reasonably priced and usually their turnaround is pretty quick. Ive also demoed skis from them and felt like they had high-quality selections. Its one of the few places (the only place?) to demo backcountry gear in Truckee, so if that is what you are looking for... look no further. In the summer they switch over to mountain bikes and climbing/hiking gear. Ive actually never been there in the summer, but Id be surprised if it wasnt just as high quality as their winter selection.Friendly locals, high quality gear, reasonable prices. Love this place.
Bought my first bike there, Kona process 153, great advice, good people
Completed the avalanche course that is held upstairs. Ended up buying a bunch of gear at the shop downstairs as well. Great service and knowledgeable staff. Will likely use this as my local gear store on Truckee.
We bought some snow shoes and poles from Here and they were super helpful in making sure we got the right stuff and even went so far to pull us out of line because they found a better option and deal on the poles we were going to go with. It was shocking to have someone do that (a pleasant surprise of course).
One of my favorite sports shops in the world. Not large, not that small either with an awesome selection.
Great shop and friendly and very helpful staff they know bikes great gear to I bought a Kona downhill bike here love it
Incredible staff. Major gear heads and real, genuine service. My husband and I drive from Reno when we need anything to bike/climb/ski. 💯
Tacod my front wheel (blowout descending 3rd Divide) during a weekend adventure in the Tahoe area. The Downieville peeps recommended this shop. Hustled back to Truckee and it couldnt have gone better. These dudes were super cool, way knowledgeable, and extremely efficient in getting me fixed up with a new wheel and on my way. Saved my weekend. After spreading my story around the next couple days, too many other locals confirmed that this is the go to LBS in the area. Will not disappoint, have what you need in stock, and absolutely slam the install. Thanks guys.
Quick Service for mounting up a pair of Dynafit bindings! Will be back!
Great fast friendly staff!!!
Worst customer care. Avoid. They used to be at least fair. Beware of used returned items or open box. Further be aware of charge for return or even equal exchange. I would avoid the grief and avoid them altogether.
Rudest gear shop in Truckee. Wouldnt shop here if you paid me to. So many better places to choose from
Best gear shop in truckee
Stopped by in the middle of a tour to get a few problems checked out, everyone was super helpful and friendly and got me back in the road in no time at all.
Excellent fast service. Really great mechanics that were able to fix my bike on short notice.
They have helped me keep my kids bikes up and running smoothly many times. Always going above and beyond.
We got a Kona bike from here. We never used the free maintenance nor the tune ups as they advertised because we spend most of our time in Bay area. When we need a help to inflate a tubeless tire on the Kona, there was no hassle.
The most fire shop in town wouldent go anywhere ealse and I’ve been going here since I was 10 from a flat tire to a bike rebuild
The shop is full of knowledgeable folks, up to date and solid gear gurus who will put you on the correct whip for a great price. We came in from Colorado and left with trail recommendations not found on Mtb project, latest tech brand info and updated gear.
Great shop, Very helpful crew who know their stuff..
Purchased a 2015 used KONA, Precipt for$1700. The sales rep prepped the bike, air, chain lube, stem caps, fork shock cap.. A week later I had it and my other bike stolen off my Yakima rack.. I went back and purchasedtwo, 2015 SCOTT bikes for $3600. Asked the salesman to be sure to lube the chain, put valves stem caps on, shock cap, check the brakes and adjust the air shock weights per our weights. But when I picked them up none of the word was done, not even the valve stem caps. POOR POOR sales reps at the Truckee location for sure. Spent $5300 and couldt get stem caps! We had to leave on our trip to Baja as is.
Friendly and expert service
Great people, great products.
Nice shop, great consignment area
When I reacted disappointed/shocked that they threw out my mtn treads after installing road slicks, I was told verbatim to “chill out”. In the second phone call when they were confirmed to be gone and I said “I just have one thing i want to point out about that” I was rudely interrupted and the “chill out” comment was defended.
The shops dialed
Such friendly people. Thanks for the SUP rental!
Rad shop!
