Update: why don’t you warm up croissants. I don’t understand why they’re opposed to warming up croissants. It can’t take that long. The croissants are good but unless you get there when it’s made it’s going to be cold. Just bagels toasts their bagels so I go there now. If you do always offer to toast/warm then maybe I just encountering the same front desk person who tells me “no”
Delicious baked goods - we had sea salt dark chocolate focaccia and cinnamon bun. The iced tea was also very good(perfect amount of sweetness and flavor). Definitely will visit again!
Phenomenal baked goods. Even the vegan pastries are great, and I normally think that vegan substitutes for normal food taste awful. They have a particularly excellent baguette.
Amazing! Had an Earl Grey tea latte (whole milk) with chocolate and it was just incredible. I highly recommend it! Also had a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and cucumber, which was delicious!
Holy guacamole, bakery heaven. Small batch and limited quantity but worth the wait and nothing has disappointed thus far. Im a huge fan of their bagels and brioche buns. Like that they work with a local coffee roaster too. Staff is always really pleasant and helpful too. Line moves quickly despite looking daunting.
Ive been getting baguettes here and they are delicious! Good enough to eat plain, but also amazing with cheese or jam!Additionally, I was running late for my pick up, and the employee who was working was kind enough to text me to check in about my order. I thought that was very professional and courteous. This is definitely one of Phillys best bakeries!
One of the best Lattes I’ve ever had. They were out of bagels.
Loved this place!!! Pro tip - order multiple cinnamon buns, I made the rookie mistake of ordering 1... it was delicious and devoured in minutes - will be ordering multiple next time! Great focaccia bread and love your soft pretzels!
What is more appealing than a simple bakery with good coffee for your morning stop over? The Kettle Black has amazing bagles (which seem house made but I didnt ask) and delicious coffee. Its really small so youll most likely be taking your food to go. They do have about 10 seats between inside and out though if you care to sit. But come for the food! They also have unique featured coffee drinks which seem to change regularly.
Love it. Will leave South Philly for good bread! I got a bagel with vegan cream cheese with tomato, large coffee, and a baguette. The bagel is easily the best bagel Ive had in forever and the tomato was pretty decent. Apparently locally sources, so thats nice. The baguette didnt even make it out of the shop before I started eating it! Will be back, many times!*Pandemic* have been ordering and picking up bread and its been one of the things that brings me great joy. I look forward to it every week. Bread. Fresh bread. 💕
Small little storefront in northern liberties. Minimal seating on the inside but it doesn’t matter because the products are amazing anywhere. The dark chocolate rosemary focaccia is addictive and too easy to put down in one sitting. The chickpea/avocado salad is very good, but probably not worth the $4 addon.
This is my favorite place to eat in the city
😩 I thought this was just a regular bread place. But it’s not. It’s a SUPER bread place!Went here with a buddy. I was like: Why do they add chocolate to everything?WOW I’m so glad they add chocolate to so many things!!!Savory focaccia with chocolate chunks?! TO DIE FOR. It’s good chocolate, not cheap chocolate, and it’s not too sweet, it’s just PERFECT.We ate in the store and had hot tea also. Everything was sooooo good. Croissants. Focaccia. I even took a loaf of bread home, sooo good.I ate the loaf all by myself LOL over a few days. Kept it refrigerated and in a plastic bag. I have ONE CHUNK of bread left, gonna eat it right now. It’s so good you can eat it plain, but I have some cream cheese in the fridge. I also tried it with peanut butter, and with orange marmalade. Simply delicious.I’m going back to try the bagels. This is my new favorite place ❤️
Love this bakery. Such nice people, and amaaazing baked goods. The bagels are delicious. They also have great veggie cream cheese! Keep an eye on their Instagram for when they open their online store for preorders. They usually sell out quick!
Decent bagel, but they don’t really seem tocare about serving there full service customers it’s more of a prorder place. Other bagel shops in Philly have already gotten back to providing full service bagel with spreads. Seems like they don’t care once they have become popular. Spread bagel & the new Korshak bagelry 10th and Morris Streets in South Philly will be better options if you need a real place. You guys need to step up your game!
Simply delicious. Get your baked goods and have a coffee from dolce and caffe across the street.
Their bagels are delicious. Whenever Im headed remotely in their direction I order a dozen to pick up.
I happened on this place but its in Old City, not a bad thing but it takes effort to get me there early. These bagels and bread are ridiculously tasty! You can eat one plain, I have many times😉The bagels are light and most/all have charcoal in them. Which is good for you right😉👍 a small sitting area inside and out and also they have started selling the cream cheese that they have every week. When I went it was Strawberry Basil, yum!! They do sell out of the bagels, especially on the weekends....
OMG! You be hooked as soon as you any of their bread. Be sure to check out their charcoal bagels when they have them. They are unexpectedly delicious!
This is a tough one. The place is inviting and smells gorgeous, the staff is friendly, location is great. The bread is perfect -flavor, aroma, texture and appearance. So why two stars?First, having a fantastic coffee from Paddler and Synesso -the supercar of espresso machines made me hopeful there is finally a place in NoLib serving worthy coffee. The photos on this Google profile of latte art in nice cups reassured me a barista is on staff who cared. Nope. A heap of tongue-scorching insanely-boiling milk just dumped atop a terrible under-extracted sour shot was careless, harsh, undrinkable. (See photo. This is supposed to be a cortado). Seriously, if you want to put “coffee” on your sign this day and age at an affluent neighborhood in the middle of a major US metro with progressive food scene (and charge like La Colombe for it), you need to have a trained barista who cares. When I dumped the coffee and explained it wasn’t drinkable I felt bad and the guy seemed genuinely embarrassed, but he didn’t apologize, offer a re-do, refund or credit. Why would I go there for meetings over sandwiches and baked goods (and take stuff to go home while at it) if the coffee is so unimportant?Secondly, $8 for a loaf of Pain de Campagne (basic plain all-white French country bread) in Philly? That’s over the top. The wood burning oven sourdough baked fresh at La Colombe is $3.50 for the loaf. The place has charm and huge potential but need to step it up. If they do I will be happy to revise this.
Be sure to go there early before they sell out
Good bakery. Pretty hectic on the weekends. Sell out of most loaves early. Would love if they made the ordering line more clear. But theyre good enough that people will come no matter what the ordering situation is so long as the bread stays that good.
This is the best bakery I’ve ever been to. Their bagels are amazing (try the black everything!) and the coffee is good too. The staff is terrific. Thank you so much guys.
I dont think it is possible for these guys to make anything bad. I highly recommend their croissants (and Im French so you should trust me). Also recommended: bagels, my personal favorite is the black everything bagel. And there are plenty of toppings to choose from. Last but not least: they are all super nice in there!
Best bread shop in Philly! Order early because they run out fast.
Not only are the bagels tasty, the staff is very patient and nice. Stopped by on a Saturday morning a despite the long line, the patrons were all waiting quietly and patiently for the delicious coffee and bakery items that awaited them. When I got to the counter the worker seemed cool calm and collected despite the never ending line. Once I ordered, it came quickly. There was seating available out front that we could sit and enjoy. I got a cheddar everything bagel with jalapeno cream cheese that was so good and flaky and chewy at the same time.
Came here for a couple drinks in the morning while spending a weekend in Philly. The bread and bagels looked amazing. Would have given it 5 stars but I ordered a tea latte and it was mainly milk and very little tea. Will most likely go back next time Im in Philly to try some of the bagels, will avoid the tea latte next time.
Our favorite bagels in the whole Philadelphia area! The taste, the texture and look is awesome! We tried a lot of different styles of bagels but this is the One! My favorite one is black sesame with lox and veggies, iced tea and coffee is delicious as well! We have beed there multiple times and will come more. Even regular bagel with butter and jam is amazing. Also specials are cool addition to the regular menu, they sell bread, of course.
A welcomed addition to Northern Liberties! Vegan pastries that smell delicious and taste delicious, yummy coffee, and friendly staff, what more could you ask for? As soon as you walk in, you are overtaken by the delicious smelling baked goods. Almond milk latte was delicious too! I cant wait to try the carrot lox next time I go.
These guys have the best vegan croissants Ive ever had hands down. But they sell out fast so go early! They also have a bunch of other vegan goodies like cinnamon rolls and bagels.Even if you arent vegan, they have a bunch of stuff for you too! All in all a great place for anyone.
Kettle Black is the best bakery in the city. The staff are friendly, the bagels, breads and pastries are amazing AND they have wonderful vegan options. Yes, it’s busy on the weekends, but it’s absolutely worth the wait.
Great vibe coffee shop. Im not from the area and stopped in before a meeting. A nice variety of tea lattes and amazing baked goods. Seating is limited but with WiFi and a computer, youll be just fine.
Quaint coffee shop with unbelievable pastries and bagels! Excellent variety for bagels and toppings. Nice shop to sit and enjoy your coffee. Best suited for 1-3 people, if you have a party of 4 someone may need to stand. Highly highly recommend this place!
Kettle Black is an unassuming little bakery in Philadelphia that has gotten a lot of acclaim simply because of the amazing pastries and breads that they make. I could not agree more with the ratings and the raves that its gotten over the years. Its near the center of Pittsburgh and its a little bit hard to find because the door is not obvious but it is worth looking for. Keep in mind that they do close by 2:00 in the afternoon. If you have the opportunity while youre in Pittsburgh go there and try their flaky, rich chocolate croissants.Hmmmm, yum.
Visited the Kettle Black while visiting family recently. What a refreshing experience! Beautiful breads. Had a delicious sandwich and great coffee. People were very friendly and welcoming. I’ll be back the next time I am in town! Kate
Coffee, baked goods, and service are all amazing. I dont eat a lot of bread but when I do I go to Kettle Black. Without hesitation they offer the best bagels and other breads that you will ever eat. Get there early because they often sell out!
These are probably my favorite bagels in the city -- chewy exterior, soft center, ample toppings, perfect cream cheese portion. So good! The croissants are ta-die-for as well. Open a second location plz?
Easily one of the best bakeries in Philadelphia. Look for their bagel specials, or just get a bagel with Lox and the works. I took home a loaf of bread and have been enjoying it all week. This place is top notch.
Seriously?! Not sure what magic is going on here but that vegan croissant I had was heavenly. Like eye cross swoonery. Like close your curtains and lick up all the crumbs. Like I wish you would ask me for a bite-NOPE. Highly. Recommend. Delicious. And very friendly service 👌
These are the best bagels in the city
This is a wonderful, unassuming place for outstanding breads, loaves, croissants, bagels. There is a simple daily menu of about four items, all freshly made to order and delicious. Once you taste their bread and pastry, you wont be satisfied with anything else.
Bagels are some of the best in the city. Coffee isn’t bad either. I visit frequently and will in the future.
I stopped in today to get out of the cold, have a cup, and work for 45 minutes. Little did I know that the owner was a barista at my old neighborhood joint. The shop itself is adorable and she has always been so sweet to me and even remembered my dogs name. Im huge on local businesses and supporting each other and Ill certainly be back to support them in their new endeavor. All the best to you moving forward!
All I do is eat bread. I eat and eat and eat and eat and eat it. I love it. And I eat it all the time. I go to a LOT of bakeries and absolutely Hoover baguettes. Its an addiction. This bakery is the best Ive been to in Philly. Their croissants (normal and vegan) are from a different planet, their various loaves are eclectic and daring and delicious... and their baguettes. What can I say about their baguettes. They are in a food group of their very own, on par with the ancient Greek ambrosia of mythos.Basically, this place is really dope.
This place has definitely become a neighborhood favorite. We love their bread, and they make really good pastries as well! Also, they have some of the best vegan pastries Ive ever tasted, and they rotate them regularly!
The best bread and bagels ever, very close to Paris. The service is fantastic and the peope are wonderful! Love Kettle Black
AMAZING bakery, the best bread I’ve ever had. Will come back time and time again.
One of the best bagels I’ve ever had in my entire life. The service was impeccable too. The vibe was good too. I felt like I was seeing the real philly even though I was just visiting.
The coffee is great, but the bread is the real star. Made fresh, from scratch, every day, and it shows. The bagels are also fantastic, but if you want a bagel I suggest getting there before noon, they sell out fast!
Good bagels and coffee. Nice selection of teas as well. Small place that gets busy, so its a bit difficult to sit and have comfortable space.
Incredible bagels, bread and pastries (shout out to the pan au chocolate and cheddar everything bagel!!). The bagels are inventive and always super fresh. Coffee is fantastic every time and the owners/staff are friendly and sweet. A true local spot that I hope will continue to grow!
A wounderful spot. The charcoal bagels are unique and really good.
I dont usually write reviews but this place deserves a shout out. Not only are the food and drinks phenomenal but the people are stellar too. Their head baker, Bread Jawn, makes some seriously tasty (and beautiful...check out their Instagram) creations and the entire staff, including the owners/founders, are genuinely friendly and unpretentious. Icing on the cake (or vegan cinnamon roll) is the prices are super reasonable.
They run outta bagels fast, so get there early. The chocolate focaccia is wonderful.
Awesome addition to the neighborhood! Bagels are best Ive ever had -very unique- beet ginger sesame bagels... amazing!
Black bagels are as good as they are cool looking. Great Lattes
Great new place in our neighborhood. A must for baked goods and coffee. Probably one of the best baguettes that I have eaten in awhile.
The gem of Philly, let alone the Northern Liberties neighborhood. 5/5 I get my bread jawn here regularly.
Great bread, bagels and pastries. If you can grab them before they sell out, the sticky buns are incredible.
All of the bread is excellent, though not every flavor is a home run (Im looking at you, Cheddar Thyme). Particularly good are the bagels and noteworthy cream cheese.
I love the Vegan pastries and my partner loved the vegan lox and cream cheese bagel. Friendly and helpful staff and delicious food.
If youre in northern liberties you should absolutely stop here and grab some bread.
Wonderful baked goods. They close when they run out, so get in early if you want a good selection of good stuff to choose from.
Very friendly women! Lavender cold brew coffee was yummy and not expensive.
The best baguette ever. Hurry before they sell out.
Best bagel Ive had in quite a long time. They also have vegan cream cheese which makes my little heart flutter.
Great coffee and breads. Grilled cheese and bagel sandwiches are creative and very good.
If I could rate TKB at a 100/100, I would! Best staff & the best breakfast treats in the entire world.
It was clean, the staff was friendly, and the bagels were literally the best Ive ever had.
Absolutely amazing pastries, including vegan ones. The coffee is superb as are the bagels.
Great Coffee, and they have some of the best Vegan pastries in the city. Grab a bagel with tofutti and vegan lox to eat there, and get a chocolate croissant to go!
Excellent pastries, tasty iced tea, and friendly staff. Highly recommend the croissants.
The black everything bagel Verde is amazing! Spicy and filling!
Always worth the wait
I get their apple croissants. Delicious but they hardly have them.
Delicious breads!!
We were in Philly from Long Island. This place was near our Airbnb with great reviews. Its more minimalist than we expected. The chedder with everything bagel my husband ordered tasted good, but it was not an everything bagel as we know it. It was a cheddar bagel with sesame seeds.I ordered a drip coffee and a chocolate croissant. The cashier tells me, on a Sunday morning, that the drip machine is not working. Really?! On a Sunday? I dont do those frou frou coffees. So, I cancelled the coffee and just ate the croissant. The chocolate croissant was a folded croissant with a layer of chocolate the width of a toothpick on each end, literally nothing in the middle. This place was packed (with hipsters) and nothing but a huge disappointment. Philly has nothing on New York.
Imagine a bakery in heaven 🤔 ... this is it, 😌Its called The Kettle Black!
The best bagels, croissants, baguettes, breads in the city. Coffee is super good too. Organic and seasonal ingredients makes it even better. Plenty of pastries as well. The pain au chocolat and baguettes remind me of the ones Ive eaten in France. Youve got to try the kouign-amann -- yummy, crunchy, buttery flakey...just awesome. Super unique as well, with things like black bagels and bright fuchsia beet hummus which is also really good. A whole bunch of vegan and veg options, including vegan lox bagel. *Drool* Everything is made fresh and by hand. Never had a bad experience. You can just tell they really care about what they are doing and theres a lot of heart in it. Im thankful for this new addition to NoLibs!
I’m deaf (wear a cochlear implant so I have *some* hearing) and had difficulty interacting with the person taking my order. At the end of our exchange she said something to the effect of “Yikes, that was awkward.” Was very alienating. Will not be returning.
The vegan croissants are beyond delicious
Outstanding service, superb coffee.
GET THE FOCACCIA!!!!! JUST GET IT!!!!!!! STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND GET IT RIGHT NOW!!!
They have a limit on how much you can buy
Lovely sea salt, fennel, garlic, and thyme bagel!
Really incredible bread and good coffee
Best breads and bagels in the city
Its the damn jam! #browndogmax approved!
Some of the best sourdough in the city
BEST. BAGELS. EVER.
Love the people and the food
Bread bagels coffee yay!
