This record store isn’t my favorite…. The prices are reasonable, but the store has no character or “umph.” The selections/genres are lumped together - instead of narrowed down to make browsing easier. No energy in the music they were playing. Overall a dull experience. I left without making a purchase, which is rare for me in a record store.

Awesome selection of records but these employees are stuck in 2012 Portland. This is the Buffalo Exchange of records.I’m tired of these “trying to be Portland” places. The kind of place where the employees treat you differently, if you didn’t straight up come out of a “Portlandia” episode. I really don’t understand this.Portland is multicultural and everything in between. We aren’t ALL “Keep Portland Weird” folks. Some of us just want to buy records and not be judged because we aren’t a stereotype.

Great place to go browsing for music, both new and old/used! I got some of my favorite Billy Joel records for pretty cheap. They have a much larger selection than what I am used to seeing in record stores, and a really satisfactory amount of metal LPs! Im definitely going to want to come back for more, and it was difficult narrowing down which albums I wanted to buy, since I had a lot of good finds.

Good selection of dvds and great prices for older TV shows! Every once in a while, the clerk is one of those Im too cool for school types, but I dont seem to get those very often. Also, it kinda sucks that they dont have a way to look up all of their inventory. But if you have an hour or so to spare, its always fun looking through the racks.

Review №37

Dont expect friendly banter about music, dont expect cheerful service, dont expect to find things you are looking for without having to engage with the most miserable and antisocial workers around, those experiences are history, relegated to nostalgia. Its a big store and there is certainly a LARGE selection, most of its current pressings are stuck in the past (70s to 90s bands), I went there with a list of 6 albums I was looking for and they didnt have any. Though, who knows, getting somebody to check inventory is only slightly more possible than finding the Lost Arc of the Covenant, and if they do, expect them to barely conceal that Portland brand of detached indifference.2nd Avenue records is where you want to go, the people that work there are old enough to appreciate the concept of CUSTOMER SERVICE.Update: I added a star because I realized that the pandemic has been stressing people out and its hard to be friendly, but I have been to this store multiple times over a decade, this is not about one lousy experience.

Regarding their vinyl section, they have a tiny “world music” section. Maybe about 50 vinyls total for everything that isn’t American. Their rock section takes up almost half the store. However I did walk away with an absolute gem for an extremely, almost unbelievably, reasonable price and it’s in near mint condition. Really a hit or miss for out of print vinyl, but when you do come across one expect to be blown away.

The rudest music store in town.I asked the short dark haired woman behind the counter if she could direct me to a particular artist. She just directs me to the letter corresponding to the artists name in the Rock section. I said knowing it wouldn’t be there (this was not a rock musician) if they had an Inventory of some sort. She said they didn’t and I was a little taken aback and said “ so no computer list at all?” And asked how they keep track of things? Which she responded quickly and rudely that no, they did it with paper like they used to - it worked fine then why not now?I took this slight rudeness and continued my search on my own. I saw her then being rude to my mother-in-law who was also searching for something. She rudely just gestures to a letter again. I let this slide too. Finally I asked for another artist and she again just said look under the letter in Rock. I tried to explain that the artist I was looking for was not a Rock musician - and that I had looked in the classical section, was there any other suggestion she could offer. She started mouthing off at me that I shouldn’t tell her how to run her store. Whereupon I’d had enough and let her know how rude she had been the whole time I was there with my family. My wife brought an album up to buy and so I paid for it.She promptly threw the receipt at me and said that I had my record and that I can leave now.I think I’ve been generous to this person in giving a full description of her actions and mine - every piece of her demeanour and way of communicating with me was as if she hated me from the get go. I have no idea why she was this way, I was trying me best be as courteous as I could. This store is going to go under if you don’t start employing people who have any passion for their work and have even an slight idea of how to treat a customer. This was one of the rudest interactions I’ve ever had in a store.I will not be returning-and I will let anyone I know have my opinion on why.

Place is awesome. The only reason I didnt give them 5 stars is because it says no where on their website that they stop buying at 8pm everyday. I was informed after hauling two big bags of dvds & cds 3+ blocks from the closest parking spot I was able to find, that they stop buying at 8pm. I let them know that it would be nice if it said that somewhere on their website. Other than that the place is awesome!!!
