Visited this tattoo/gift shop. This is the coolest store I have been to while up in the Salem area. The atmosphere is amazing. I could live there...felt so at peace. Bought a few shirts. The twins that own this shop are amazing artists and nice on the eyes too lol.Highly recommend to stop in, if not for some ink, buy some merchandise.

Now my absolute favorite and must visit when going to Salem. Dark and spooky and full of fantastic merchandise around occult, dark art, books, apparel, jewelery and more. Bring a camera and dress in your Black Sunday Best.

Best ambience of a store in Salem. You are transported into another world when you walk into this store. Great variety of books, prints, and other things. Highly recommend! A Salem must see!

Wonderful, mysterious little shop. Definitely worth the short drive away from the hustle and bustle of Essex st. I only purchased a t-shirt with a spooky black cat, but could have easily bought everything in the whole store.

Simultaneously the best ambiance, magic shop, art gallery and gift shop in one. We came here on our way out of Salem and regret not going there first. The inventory, as well as the prices are top notch.

Super awesome dark and mystical vibe the two brothers that run the place are super friendly. And they have clothes and illustrations for sale as well as amazingly detailed tattoos.

Stopped in the shoppe today on my last day in Salem. It is an absolute must. Period. End of discussion. Once you get over the absolute awe of stepping into a whole new world, there are plenty of fun finds and beautiful artwork. My little group and I were met by a super sweet lady who took the time to talk to us and make conversation about our travels. We were in the shoppe for a short time (due to tickets we had reserved at an attraction in downtown) and I didn’t actually think that I would meet the Murray brothers today. But low and behold i did. They were so very sweet and spoke to us about our travels and our hometown. They were gentle kind souls and I honestly can’t wait to make the 8 hour drive again next year. (I’m already begging my husband to book a hotel for next year and we haven’t even left town yet) Such lovely talented people. A must see shoppe. Maybe next year I’ll book enough time in town to get their art in a more permanent medium.

Have gotten three beautiful tattoos from Ryan. Very personable, very talented, very professional. Absolutely worth the price! The shop and staff are wonderful.

While staying in Salem, I made a stop into the Black Veil & the shop itself is jaw dropping. There is nothing quite like it. Although I did not get tattooed on this visit, there is plenty of merchandise created by both Murray brothers as well as other local Salem artists. I do hope to venture back one day to get more permanent artwork 🖤

Such a gorgeous freaking shop. I didn’t want to leave. I just kept wandering around looking at everything. Got some amazing and unique gothic art to take home with me!! And they had a gothic dream of a setup for you to pose in your own photos using tripods around the shop. I really wish I had done it; next time!

LOVE THIS PLACE! my daughter had been telling me about it. She lives in Cambridge at the moment. i went out there for the holidays. on my last night before heading back to the west side, we stopped in. i bought a hooded cape-like thingy, some tiny pumpkin lights, a little picture and a sticker of BUNNICULA!!! 🐇i mean come on, BINNICULA 🐰stuff?!?who even knows what HE is? much less has stuff of HIM! i seen a BINNICULA🐇 book, but i already have that one. give someone else a chance to get to know about the GREAT RABBIT! 🐰the dude that helped us that night was super cool. (wish i would have gotten his name, on January 2nd). glad my daughters boyfriend found this place. the snow outside just made it more beautiful.on my return trips to the east side, i shall be back! 🐇👯🐰🖤🤗💋✌️

Could not have had a better experience. I was tattooed by Matt and my husband was tattooed by Ryan. Both of us agree that our expectations were exceeded in every way. Josh handles much of their correspondence and did a fantastic job. The artwork and the atmosphere are exceptional. The level of kindness they show combined with the level of talent they deliver truly blew us away. We are so thankful to Black Veil for giving us art and memories that we can treasure forever.

Everything about my experience with Black Veil was great! Josh was super responsive to email and my husband and I got appointments on the same day, without a problem. The shop itself is beautiful and has so many cool items available for purchase. Matt and Ryan are just about the nicest people you could imagine, and the art they are creating is out of this world. I am absolutely in love with my tattoo (and my husbands).

The artists at Black Veil are absolutely the best. Their work is stunning and unique, and everyone compliments my tattoo (which was done by Ryan) everytime they see it. They are very quiet people, but dont take it the wrong way, they are incredibly kind! Their shop is gorgeous, whether youre there for a tattoo, or just to shop, its worth a visit. There are lots of beautiful items from local artisans!

Absolutely the best tattoo shop Ive ever been to, and hands down the best tattoo experience I have ever had. I received a beautiful piece from Matthew who made the whole experience easy, we were in the chair for about 8 hours if Im remembering correctly. He offered breaks and didnt make me feel bad or like a loser for needing a break, he and his brother offered wonderful and interesting conversation during the whole process and I just cant speak highly enough. The price was so worth what I got, you cant put a price on memorable experiences and ink like this. I cannot wait to come back for more beautiful art. Their new location is just as lovely and wonderful to be in as the last one.

We had hands down the most incredible tattoo experience here! Matthew and Ryan were professional, completely down to earth and a blast to work with. Not to mention our tattoos are absolutely next level! The studio is absolutely stunning as well, and all of the items for sale are brilliant. We cant wait to go back, even just to visit! If you get the opportunity you MUST go.

You cannot get a hold of them ever, they need to set up an assistant that only mans emails/phones. Currently they do not have an operating phone line that they answer which is inconvenient and when you send an email and they are not interested they just dont respond. There should be a thanks but no thanks pre-written email sent to everyone they decline. That being said when my friends & I entered the shop the boys and their sister were as NICE as can be, a TERRIFIC experience. They offer phone holding selfie stations, beautiful decor for photos and are happy when you do take pictures, its not awkward at all! The store is the most beautiful one ive ever been in & highly suggest to anyone visiting even if youre not able to get tattoos. I was able to buy their art, a necklace, tshirt and fake tattoos for less than $80, a STEAL! We had such a fantastic time shopping around the store, taking photos and chatting with them we stopped back a second time on our way home. MUST GO!Also if the shop wants to hire a remote assistant, let me know haha

If you want the best, theres no other place I would personally recommend. Not only was the work show-stoppingly incredible, the folks over there are genuine people. They were very kind and accommodating, and fun and interesting to talk to. Crazy part is, I didnt even get a tattoo, my sister did. I just watched and hardly noticed 6 hours go by. She had a huge smile the whole time and was so happy and excited. There simply are no words! I cant wait for my turn!

Getting a tattoo is something I have been wanting to do for years, but I have never been one to jump right in. I have pondered many concepts, sitting on them for different lengths of time, only to throw them out in the end. The concept I ended up bringing to Matt had excited me for six months prior, so I knew it was time to reach out.No other art produced by a tattoo studio has resonated with me like the artwork of Black Veil. Each piece I have seen from Matt and Ryan has enthralled me and I have spent many hours over the past few months scrolling through their portfolios on Instagram. I decided to reach out to Matt because I saw what I wanted in his art the most.I am a rather nervous creature by nature, especially in new situations where socializing is involved. By biggest fear walking through the doors of Black Veil that morning, shaking like a leaf, was not the pain to come or the commitment I was making, but being an annoying client. I am a perfectionist. I see details and I fixate. I like control. That is why I sat on so many concepts for so long. Working with a tattoo artist is a collaboration, which means I have to relinquish control, but I never wanted my concept to be exactly as I envisioned it. I wanted it to have Matts creative magic. I trusted Matt to craft something amazing out of the concept sketch and reference photos I sent him, but I was afraid there would be details I would want changed and by asking him to change them too many times I would offend or annoy him. But I knew I needed to be a responsible client both for him and for myself.When I first laid eyes on what Matt had drawn up I was blown away. It was not exactly what I envisioned, with some details being changed to add variety or to allow for a different feel, but the overall concept was still there--bettered in many ways. That was exactly how I wanted it. There was a missing detail that was a rather last minute addition I wanted, a sprig going up the back of my neck. I let him know, he drew it up, and showed me. The addition he made worked well with the design so I said yes within a couple of seconds after seeing it. After Matt left to print it up, it hit me the design of the sprig wasnt exactly what I envisioned to the point where I wanted it changed. So I got nervous. He already changed the design once for me and I was afraid I was to become that annoying client I so feared being. But I remembered I was being married to this design. If I had anything to say I needed to say it now. So when Matt brought me into the backroom, I looked at the current design and told him, apologizing profusely. He didnt get mad. He didnt look annoyed or offended. He was completely understanding, telling me that he himself was very particular about his own tattoos. I was put at ease after that. He changed the design of the sprig a couple more times and ended up increasing the size of the stencil. By the time he put the first mark on me I had no fear over the design.I can affirm that Matt is a beautiful, kindhearted person. He is understanding, compassionate, accommodating, and incredibly talented. My fears were for nothing. I was probably more annoying with how much I apologized and thanked him than being annoying for wanting things changed.The tattoo Matt gave me is on my back so I cannot fully appreciate it without looking at the photos he took for me. Whenever I look at them, I cannot believe that this incredible piece of art is on my body. It is an absolute honor and blessing to be able to carry something so beautiful with me for the rest of my life. It is nothing short of enthralling.Needless to say, I cannot wait until I can return for my next piece.

Obsessed! Ive raved to everyone back home. Its not cheap.. but after everything is said and done Its safe to say the quality of the piece I got exceeded what I paid for. The Twins are extremely talented but I felt Ryan captured exactly what i was looking for which says a lot bc I didnt contribute much.. in fact, I was very vague but once he showed me the sketch, I wanted to scream because it was exactly like I had imagined.. without thinking it lol.Amazing artistry and technique. We were able to bang this out in 5 hours no breaks. Ryan did constantly ask if I were doing ok or if I needed anything (water, snacks, etc) to which i declined although it was greatly appreciated. It was my first big tattoo so i was nervous that if i stopped id be too sore to want to continue.Josh was very pleasant too and helpful when I was trying to book.They are extremely busy so they normally only book out a month in advance, I personally planned my vacation around this appointment.If getting tattooed isnt your thing, the stop in general is breathtaking and they welcome anyone to stop by and snap pictures and shop. Ive bought sooo many candles and drawings.. Im not even really a candle person but being in there made me think that I could be. Im happy I made that decision to get tattooed on my short trip to Salem. Im almost at the 2 week mark and its healing beautifully. I cant wait to be back to add to it!

No concept of time-management during popup events. They queued up 60+ people at todays flash event (took names, copied IDs, had us fill out consent forms, etc) but didnt even get through half that number! No notification until they closed the doors and booted us out. Amazing artists though they may be, highly unprofessional way to treat other human beings.

They have an odd way of executing customer service. It is unprofessional to say the least. They will not return phone calls or emails if they simply do not want to discuss your tattoo idea. I can’t review an actual tattoo experience because i never go to that point. Very snotty way of dealing with clients.

I had the privilege of attending the flash day event on 4/7/19 at The Black Veil Studios new space in Salem. As the ads stated on various social media platforms, the event was first come, first serve for both tattooing and for the fashion selection from Nuit Clothing Atelier. The doors opened at 11 am; I was 17th in line when I arrived at 9:50 am. From Steffanie the open door enforcer to Josh at reception, and Ryan and Matt working tirelessly for many hours without breaks, The Black Veil was nothing but accommodating, friendly, and communicative throughout the event. The space is gorgeously curated and the level of professionalism speaks for itself- Even after tattooing for hours and interacting with so many people, Ryan and Matt remained focused, personable, and produced high quality work. I will be back for more events in the future.
