I came here multiple days in a row, and it was consistently great service and fantastic coffee. We would be back very often to get fresh coffee and awesome breakfast sandwiches. The beans they sold there were roasted within the week, with roast date written on the bottom of the bags. The one oddity was that they put ice in the nitro cold brew.
This is a gem of a place! Delicious coffee which they roast themselves - I recommend the dark roast. They can also make fancy coffee drinks like lattes and such, and I overheard another customer raving about the latte art. They also have a robust breakfast/lunch menu with a wide variety of sandwiches. We went two days in a row and I can attest the lox is good, and the sandwiches on the pretzel buns are tasty - try the fig jam! They are also dog-friendly, allowing dogs in the shop with treats at the counter. Highly recommend!
Loved loved loved this location and coffee. Recently visited SD and stayed with a friend just down the street and let me tell you, the staff and the coffee were amazing. Well worth the visit if you’re in need of an ice vanilla latte. Oh, they have a kitchen too and the breakfast was good as well. ❤️
The first time I went to this place, the server was rude and the coffee was bad. That was a couple of years ago. This morning, I was desperate for coffee so i thought Ill give this place another go. Bad call.I ordered a coffee, added a little soy milk and when I tasted it, it was just a little bit above room temperature. So I told the lady and she made another one for me. The second time, she gave it to me with a lid already on it and told me she steamed the soy milk so it would be hot. I should have taken that as a red flag that it was a challenge for them to make a proper cup of coffee with water at the correct temperature. The cup felt so hot that I was afraid to taste it right then and there. So, I thanked her and took the coffee without tasting it. She didnt add enough soy milk and the coffee tastes very weak. Such a bummer. The only reason I went there was because I ran out of soy milk or any creamy substance at home and the place is just down the street. I would have enjoyed black coffee at home more than what they served. I will not go back there again. The restaurant across the street makes better coffee.
Pretty good coffee. Love their Aztec ice brew. Will come again in the future!
I want to love this place, but I just can’t. I’ve dropped in here a few times because it’s so close to my apartment and I want to give it a shot. But each time, I am reminded why I didn’t come back earlier. The coffee is consistently bad and lacks flavor while good customer service is inconsistent. I want to support local businesses, but it’s hard to justify when the product isn’t good and quality service is lacking.
There are even a couple of relaxing lounge chairs. My friends and I were instantly greeted here. The coffee is huge, and the baked goods are as well.
The breakfast sandwiches are exceptionally good. And the coffee...so good. So so good. They are actual artists. Its not just some machine mixing drinks. Really stellar environment and product. Its also the first coffee shop Ive ever been to where an employee came by and said, if the coffee isnt how you want it, let me know and we can adjust it how you want it.
I had a morning coffee here. The coffee was amazing! I had a cold brew, and it didnt disappoint me at all. The sandwiches were great, and I can customize them and satisfied with the results. They also run workshops, and you can even buy their beans to take home. I strongly recommend this place!
Achilles Coffee has the tastiest coffee Ive had and an excellent breakfast sandwich at a good price.
I had porridge with fresh fruit and granola and it was so delicious that I decided to post this review immidiately. Coffee is also amazing ! What a good find !
I absolutely love this shop!!! I usually order through Doordash. Amazing breakfast sandwich and the coffee is always hot and on point. I just wanted to say thank you.
Great food, coffee and tea! Were coming here every day for breakfast while were in town!❤
Great breakfast sandwiches. Lots of good choices for coffee and food.
Delish coffee roasted a few blocks away right in downtown SD. Nice outdoor space including umbrellas for those too-sunny days. Pets welcome.Staff mostly pleasant. Waits can be long at peak times (mornings ....) They have a nice selection of pastries including my fave a gluten-free pistachio cakelette.Smells like bacon when I walked over today tempting me .... a few breakfast and lunch options.Fair prices. Nice place to sit and watch downtown walk by
Great coffee and super friendly staff
Id certainly come back again, and I recommend it to everyone. Excellent coffee! A tiny, intimate venue.
Great food and coffee. Nice vibe.
Very good coffee shop. Making and brewing one fantastic cup at a time.
Visited San Diego and had coffee at a bunch of different places. This was by far the best coffee I think I have ever had!! Got the iced mocha just the way it was. It was smooth and not overly sweet! It was perfect!
I was craving a chai latte and this happens to be two blocks from my apartment. I try to buy local before going to a chain coffee shop but its fair to say I wont be coming back. The latte was ok, the breakfast sando was ok. When I got there my sando was ready, coffee was not. I waited outside for around 5-8 mins. While I was waiting I saw the barista preparing a coffee but theres no way for me to know it was mine. They didnt yell out a name. There were three employees and one bothered to ask me if I was waiting for something, but they sure talked amongst themselves and while looking right at me. Will walk to Starbucks next time cause honestly, you cant beat consistency in service and taste of drinks. What a shame.
Great breakfast sandwich! Great coffee!
Great coffee! Friendly service!
Its ok. Coffee was ok. Dont try the breakfast item the one with peanut butter and bananas. It was too sweet and too much peanut butter on two toasts. One with avacado was ok.
Really youre everyday corner coffee shop. The staff were super friendly and are implementing the covid regulations for sure. You can walk in order and wait outside. There are some seats out there so its pretty cool. They specialize in pour over coffee so I highly recommend to step out of the normal and try something different. We ordered the a pour over with a splash of almond milk. Man was it delicious. I believe it was a southern mexican bean. Cant remember the name. But they rotate as they should be. We also got a vanilla iced latte and that was super yummy. It hit the spot while walking around the city.
This was by far one of the best lattes I’ve had in San Diego. Perfect temperature and the right amount of flavor. These folks know their beans 🤗
Some of the BEST coffee Ive tasted! I ran out of coffee at home so needed a little boost to jump start my day, and this was such a delicious treat! I had vanilla latte for my morning, and ordered the Mt. Laguna sandwich for lunch later in the day, and I have to say.. it was one of my favorite sandwiches I have had in a long time. Thank you so much for being open and taking the time and care to make such wonderful, healthy meals! I guarantee you will be seeing me order from you for pickup and delivery many more times and when this quarantine is over, spending time at your coffee shop. Thank you again!!
Everything is really good, love the sandwiches
Best pour-over coffee ever! I had the San Ysidro, and its velvety smooth. That with one of the breakfast sandwiches will start your day right. Take your order to go or stay at the cafe. Theres more seating than appears from the exterior. Although very busy, the workers are knowledgeable and friendly, too, providing A-1 service. Highly recommend!
Great coffee, and food. The view of El Cortez is great as well!
As good as the other location... I had a strong, pour-over halfcaf with one of seasonal drinks and the cereal. Surprisingly, the cereal was great! Staff members were helpful and friendly. A lot of seating (inside and out) compared to the other location. I ate inside and enjoyed SD mid-day, almost 70 degree weather. Rough life, I know. Also of note, they will be opening a third location soon! Excited to check it out on a return trip back
I got the Bankers Hill breakfast sandwich (turkey/bacon/egg with arugula and fig jam) and it was absolutely delicious, among the better breakfast sandwiches Ive ever had. The nitro cold brew was also great! Their seating situation currently is all outdoor, next to the sidewalk, which is a nice al fresco dining experience.Im definitely coming back here soon, the service was friendly and the wait was reasonable given the circumstances.
I loved this place, it is a good spot to enjoy your coffee and work quietly. I found very interesting that they sell the same coffee beans they use in their beverages, freshly roasted and packed. However, I’d did not really enjoyed my coffee, for a pour over. I was expecting something more extraordinary, such as noticeable flavors and notes as well as the touch of the roast master, but that didn’t happen.
Cafe food, very tasty. this place has a cool atmosphere. food and atmosphere reminds me of kansas city.
Cute little coffee shop with great food! We did wait a bit for our food, but it’s small, so just be prepared if you are in a rush with a larger group (we had 6 people) all ordering sandwiches. We sat outside and it was great- will for sure be back when in San Diego !
Fantastic coffee!! I got an almond milk flat white and it was 👌👌👌 smooth and absolutely delicious. By far my favourite coffee I have found in the San Diego area so far.
Great service, really aimed to please the customer! Definitely marked as a place to come back to. Espresso was excellent and they have a variety of single origin coffees from around the world served as pour over - theres something for everyone. Sandwiches are made with quality breads - a prerequisite for a good sammie. Pleasant interior, simple but comforting; young, sophisticated crowd.I would recommend this place without any reservations!
Gotta be honest, this coffee is incredible. Better than Calabria - get a bag of Mt Soledad and grind it yourself - you are welcome
One of my favorite places in San Diego for a coffee. Delicious coffees (including some unusual drinks. The Turk iced is perfect on a warm day). Great friendly staff. The only thing I hate is their limited opening hours, but my annoyance with that is testament to how much I love them. Id happily make this place 24hrs if I could!
It’s my first time in San Diego, actually first time in California and I’m staying downtown... I went out for a walk this morning and passed a coffee shop. And for being a huge coffee lover and trying new places, this is the BEST coffee I have ever had. The workers were very sweet as well. I highly recommend anyone to stop in. I didn’t have any breakfast but it looked and smelled great too!
Had the pour over coffee which was very good. They have a large menu of cold brew drinks with cream and spices. My companion had one with cinnamon that was delicious but rich. They were very busy at 8am on a Saturday but they have a quiet room next door to hang out.
Excellent coffee. Pour overs are top-notch, and fancy coffee drinks are delicious.
Achilles Coffee Roasters is a great example of the perfect weather in San Diego. Its a permanent outdoor coffee stand in downtown San Diego. Since its at the bottom of an office building, its a little hard to notice so make sure you have the address. The staff are friendly and they quickly make your coffee in the morning so you can be on your way. They sell pastries and any type of coffee you want. I ordered a large latte and it comes with four shots in it (one of the strongest lattes Ive had!). They have cream and sugar if you need to doctor it up.They cater to the downtown on-the-go crowd, but there are several outdoor tables if you want to stay awhile and sip on your strong coffee. Why not? The weather is always perfect in San Diego!
Roast has a nice light flavor with a creamy aftertaste. Prepared a little too hot, so ask to go light on the steaming.
Go to support Achilles if you live within a mile! And if you dont, come in on a Saturday morning for a chat and a pour-over. Best coffee I have had in San Diego, and easily top 5 Ive had in all of California. Cute place too, and the service is top tier. Had a great chat every time I came in here, 4 times in a 5 day trip to SD.
Smooth pour over coffee is worth going back to enjoy the atmosphere of beans being freshly roasted and comfortable seating. Food and pastry also available, next visit! Super fast and friendly. Great for city watching
5 stars, lots of space in the back to meet up, good wireless, kinda fanatical about the coffee with a lot of local flair in a cool area just outside of downtown, if you are looking for a regular place to go near downtown to meet up and hang out... clean and the staff is friendly, never too busy just busy enough and has a good vibe. They do a nice flat white.
I live up the street and having a local coffee shop so close is just nice. The smell of coffee roasting in the morning helps me wake up. I get my coffee beans from here and I appreciate that I can bring my own jar for them to fill. The coffee is amazing, our favorite is the Gaslamp blend (dark/medium roast blend). They also have cold brew and pastries.
I worked out of this place for a day during my visit to San Diego. This is a wonderful little cafe located close to Gaslamp QuartersTheres free WiFi and ample seating inside if youre looking to get some work doneI would recommend the quiche and the house made variation of drip coffee
Baked goods were of excellent quality, partifularly the birthday cake and seasame donuts. Interior is nicely done up as well. Donut selection could have been wider though.Achilles Coffee Roasters on Cortez Hill.
Excellent experience! I ordered avocado toast and a latte, and it was delicious! The setting was air conditioned and quiet, with great vibes, great music, and delicious coffee! I was a first time customer, but it wont be my last time! Delicious!
Great breakfast spot with a lot of breakfast egg dishes and brunch sandwiches. Ive tried the avocado toast (Tourmaline), Eggs Benedict (Del Mar), and the vegetarian sandwich (Coronado). All were delicious and refreshing. The coffee is roasted in house - cold brew really hits the spot on a warm sunny day (basically every day).
Very peaceful, quiet, cosy place for a great cup of coffee. I was dumbstruck by their pour over selection, and their concoctions to go with them. Their staff was very friendly and welcoming!
First time and I am impressed. Great sandwiches. Great coffee and welcoming service.
Espresso tasted delicious! great sandwiches as well! I like that it has comfortable chairs and sofa to relax in the back. The only minor bad thing about this place is that it closes too early at about 3pm.
I visit this coffee shop often and they never fail to give impeccable customer service with delicious coffee to match. I always get the Aztec iced and it is the perfect start to my day! You can taste the high quality coffee in each drink. 10/10 recommend.
Oh man just go.
I found the coffee too lemony for my tastes. I asked the servers about the coffee flavor and they just pretended like I didnt even say anything and just kind of stood there actively ignoring me, so I left while they were busy rebooting.
Place wss nice, but try to train your staff. A guy just thrown knife and fork on the table without saying a word. Maybe you should learn how to talk to your customers first and then call yourself as a good coffee place.
Food and coffee were both excellent, and service was prompt. I had the Hillcrest with bacon and was really happy with it. Overall, no complaints!
Fast, creative coffee, perky staff, and delicious pastries. The perfect way to begin the day. A little pricey, but thats probably just the location.
Great coffee and a really cool location. The coffee selection is very diverse. Staff was great with quick service. Definitely would recommend getting a cup of coffee here.
Best English Breakfast tea Ive had in a long while. Served hot and strong, the way it should be :) Bright clean space, friendly people.
Their almond milk Carmel pecan latte is so good! The staff is nice and friendly. First time here, but Ill definitely be back.
Professional and friendly and great coffee... Cheers :)
Loved this place. Had a Chai Latte which I loved and my daughter had a hot chocolate which she kept telling me how good it was. The baristas were great and kept making my 4 year old laugh. Wish I lived closer so I could make it my regular coffee place.
Some of the best coffee in San Diego! I went here recently when a friend discovered this gem, I swear the beans have something magical going on.. or Ive never had coffee this fresh! What a unique flavor profile. I definitely recommend this coffee shop to coffee aficionados!
Nice. Cozy. Decent food. Good coffee. Interesting vibe with sacks of coffee on the floor. Not a starbucks feel so refreshing and different.
Delicious coffee, good vibes, pleasant scents, outdoor seating
Great coffee at the top of Ash street! I was visiting from out of town and stumbled upon Achilles right around the corner from the hotel on 6th. Do yourself a favor and skip the bad hotel coffee and get an amazing pour over cup at Achilles!
Wowza!! The Aztec cold brew is YUMMY! Just happened to walk by this place, new to the area. I shall be back for sure. A coffee that instantly made me smile it was so amazing. Thanks!!
Great place!! Not busy at 8am on a Saturday. Delicious avacado toast with eggs and sprouts.
Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Food was excellent, made to order, fresh, and large portions.
What a great find! Tasty espresso and a variety of very good thoughtful sandwiches, toasts, etc. Attentive service. Enough seating. Enjoyed Encinitas sandwich and avacado toast with poached egg
Really like the people that work here. However owner is absentee. Pastries arent inconsistent in taste and freshness
Seriously one of the best cups of coffee Ive ever had! The Turk cold brew blew my mind. Will definitely come back.
I’m from out of town and arrived when it had just closed, a very polite man said no worries and made my drink which was wonderful. Great tasting coffee made to my exact specifications!
They roast their own coffee and they recycle. Great cuppa Joe!
Wowwww excellent. Some of the best coffee Ive had in a while. We parked in an Instapark lot, and were right around the corner. Very convenient trip to the city all around.
This is the best coffee Ive had! They hand roast the beans onsite. I buy the bags of beans weekly to make at home. They have great pastries too. Its a great space with free wifi. You have to try the Dealers Choice- cold or hot!
Delicious coffee and sandwich. Great service
Best coffee in San Diego! No milk, cream or sugar necessary. Best smiles! Great atmosphere.
Amazing coffee, if you are doing a cappuccino you should have it with oat milk, it adds a great texture
This was the best coffee shop food Ive ever had. Nothing was greasy. Everything tasted very freshamd came out quickly. I believe I had the Hillcrest sandwich. It was big enough to fill me up. The coffee was really good. Theres wifi and different choices for seeding (tables, couches, armchairs, window bar). I went on a weekday during the afternoon and this place was empty.
