The owner is so nice! He helped me figure out some stuff about my camera. They had all the film you could ever need. They also had a lot of new and vintage camera equipment and accessories for chill prices! I got a old camera bag in good shape for $6. There’s a lot of stuff to choose from, but it’s very cool.
Due to the death of the stores owner, Photo Market is temporarily closed. If you have an open order call them (theyve been great about handling loose ends). They hope to figure out a way to reopen eventually, but Im not aware of a timeline.Thank you Peter for the years of great customer service. Portland will miss you.
They have always taken great care of me and their attention to making nice prints is great!
Great store and great people. I’m so sorry to hear about your sudden loss.
Hands down the best place to go for a camera or photo related equipment or accessories in Maine. The staff is knowledgeable and loves to talk about photography and your needs, and match you up with the options that best suit you. They have EVERY thing you could need for photography, which is reflected in the overwhelming amount of stuff you see when you walk in the door. It may not make sense to the untrained eye, but they will find you what you need - just ask. If you come 30 minutes before closing its likely to be busy. Actually, most of the time I go I have to wait for a bit - so plan on more time than you think, and use wait time to look around and find those things you didnt know you needed. Trust me, you need them. If by some remote chance they dont have it right there, they can get it for you. If you love photography, are anywhere from beginner to passionate amateur to pro, swing by and say hi. You probably wont leave empty handed. I never do.
Absolute mess of a shop and the owner is incredibly rude. No wonder the shop is full of junk, he ebays the price as he’s trying to sell it to you.
If I need camera equipment of any kind, this is the place. Really friendly and knowledgeable people. Have bought all types of accessories and camera stuff, rented a high power lense, and sought advice. Awesome place! Also, Photo Market is a great source if you have old or antique equipment to deal with. Yesterday, I bought a new old stock 8mm film reel and canister for my 1960 Kodak movie projector. If you still shoot film instead of digital, they have all the standard sizes in stock. Highly recommended!
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE !!! I Went in to get my camera cleaned and detailed. A man (later found out it was the owner) finally asked if I needed help (I had been standing in front of him for several minutes) as the other employee was busy. When I asked if they could clean and detail my camera, he explained I had to wait to ask the tech to come back in a few and asked if I had some errands to run. I asked a few like a half hour? or a few like 10 minutes? He said the tech hadnt clocked out so a few. I agreed to wait. When a man with curly hair returned behind the counter I asked if that was the tech but it wasnt. When the actual tech came back (smelling heavily of pot to a point where MY lungs were burning) I explained what I needed, he said it would be 10 to 15 dollars over the 50 charge to clean the sensor. I asked how long for it to be done. He said a day to day and a half. I asked is it possible to get it the next day he said, Its possible but, I dont know because he (the tech indicated the owner) had said he had an issue with you when you came in. I asked what he meant an issue with me?. He said he didnt know. So, I looked at the owner and asked what issue he had with me ? The owner said the tech must be joking but, the tech stood by the issue thing. They both hedged back and forth, the owner saying it was a joke and the tech saying the owner had an issue with me and didnt know what it was. I then made the tech hand my camera back over to me and the tech disappeared. I pressed the owner for details on what just happened. I asked several times what the issue with me was. He told me that the tech is a good employee but, sometimes jokes inappropriately and what can he do? He also threw out that the techs mother had died the month before and that could be it. I explained how off putting all this was and explained how I cant trust leaving my camera there after that kind of exchange. The owner didnt even apologize he just kept acting odder and odder. Flabbergasted I asked the woman behind the counter what just happened. She declined my invitation to explain. This exchange was so weird that the only thing I have to compare it to is the one scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre where The Crazy Folks are all sitting at the dinner table with the one person they had captured. I felt like that captured person in some surreal cant be happening situation. It was horrible. Best of Luck ~Debbie
Very helpful. I appreciate the time spent with me on my journey learning photography. Everytime I go they have what I am looking for! Cant say that about many places these days. Id like to get an if filter and I bet if they were open today, theyd have one.
We had a positive experience in this wonderful camera store. We were visiting Maine from California and had a problem with our camera. The owner took a lot of time helping us solve the problem. When he did not have a replacement camera for us, instead of trying to hard sell us into buying something we didnt want, he referred us to another camera shop in the area. I know the store is somewhat cluttered as other reviews have reported, but I enjoyed poking around in the shop, and appreciated the attention and friendliness we encountered.
First time visited dropped off a color roll to be developed. Took a couple of days, service was decent. Next time dropped off a B&W roll and was told it would be two months. Call two months later, am told there was no record of the film even being dropped off. Oh and they couldn’t look up the order by last name?(!) Genuinely rude over the phone as well. Not great experience.
Purchased a digital camera there with accessories. They were extremely knowledgible. Kind of an interesting store as there are so many accessories. It takes time to look around but nice to try out and handle something first rather than blindly from Amaz** and find out it doesnt have the right heft or its too awkward to use.
Packed full of things, Younger guy was nice and helpful! Polaroid film was 22 bucks for 8 photos...
These guys know what theyre doing. They took all the time we wanted answering questions, explaining the equipment, and offering user tips. No high pressure selling.
I needed a collage for my husbands funeral. The work Photo Market did for the restoration of old photographs was incredible, retouching images that had been damaged over the years. The compilation Photo Market produced touched the hearts of loved ones. I cannot give high enough praise for the services they performed, easing my stress at such a difficult time. Thank you.
Owner and s in the store .Friendly staff: Polished with the latest information of productson -demand is a good as I typed in-itself.The store is packed full of product consistently.Performance is in a timely manner ..and it has earned a large following of proffessional photographers up and down theEast coast .. best in the business
The staff can be gruff, and it can be a bit of a wait to be helped if there are folks already being taken care of. However, once an employees attention has turned to you, theyll spend as much time as needed to help you with whatever you need. Theyre generous with advice, incredibly knowledgable, and clearly passionate about cameras and photography. This place is a truly amazing resource, and I feel lucky we have an old-school spot like this thats stuck around Portland!
A bit of a 70s camera store feel. But tons of goodies inside.
Was in there today searching for a film camera, they had numerous editions of the one I was looking for with a wide variety of prices depending on if the item was new or used and if anything was included with the body. An absolutely wonderful experience with very informative staff and a great variety of product.
Called ahead to order a lens before they closed but will definitely have to go back and look around. There was so much there that I could take a whole day and pick things out I need!
One and a half months after dropping off one roll of film it was not even touched. I was treatly rudely in store under the pretense that it was my fault. I had chosen to develop the wrong kind of film. Itd be nice if real film photo places stayed open but when the customer service is as terrible as this...good luck.
Yes, the store is cluttered and tightly packed, but there is a lot in there. Yes, you will need some help in finding what you need, but in my experience I was given a great deal of time (probably over two hours altogether) and my questions were all answered satisfactorily. I came in with a page full of questions, and though at first I was a bit put off by the attitude of the person who was helping me, as I persisted through my inquiries there was a noticeable change for the better, and in the end I purchased a new camera and lens for a price equal to what I could find on the internet. I would say that the people who work here have a great deal of knowledge about the products and I felt that they made sure that I had the best camera for my needs. I also know that buying locally in this case will mean that I can return to the store with my camera and have my questions answered if I have problems with it.
Go here for your passport photo! Dont waste time and money at a pharmacy. Thorough and professional results.
Always great service - very knowledgable and kind! Great selection of new and old cameras and anything you could want.
If you know what you are looking for they will find it! Knowledgeable and personable.
Dropped my camera and broke my lens. Having a camera emergency. I stopped in and they had exactly what I needed. In fact I purchased a used lens which Ive never done before but Im very happy with it! They are always so knowledgeable in the photo Market
Disaster of a shop. There isnt any way of finding anything on your own because of the general clutter of the place. I have no idea how the Portland Fire Department allows them to remain in business due to the lack of mobility. Very expensive stuff and I didnt find the staff helpful when trying to find a good deal on a used camera. There are better places to shop.
Ive probably been here about 5 times and I think Ive found what I needed each time. Its crazy messy and unorganized but the staff miraculously knows where to find everything. Theyll also help you pick a product of you need guidance.
Part-time Pete was very helpful and the Nikon we got was exactly what we were looking for at a very good price that Nikon was offering.
One of the last old fashion photography stores.. chock full of new and used photo equipment and supplies. Fair prices too.
Walked in to find some specific things. The store is incredibly messy and cluttered and this made it difficult to find or reach items even if you could see them. The employee that helped me didnt seem to completely know the store or the layout and it felt like merchandise was not properly organized. Photo Market either needs to control its inventory or find a bigger space. Overall I didnt get a feel of professionalism from any of the staff there and didnt feel like they were eager to help or talk to me about photography.
Excellent service. Helped me get my camera back to Nikon for repairs and updates.
Very helpful.. Found what i was looking for in minutes. SO APPRECIATIVE...
Very good service but the store is very cluttered and hard to move around in. Not a place to go and browse. Definitely going to need help if you go.
Very helpful, friendly, and pretty much can answer any question on anything photo related
Very friendly and helpful.
I purchased a Nikon Coolpix P600 camera from Photo Market in September 2015. The camera developed a faulty mode dial. I took it into the shop and they suggested I sent it to an authorized Nikon repair facility. Upon mailing it for repair I was informed by United Camera Repair that they could not repair the camera because it was a Gray Market camera. Id never heard this term but soon learned Grey Market products are made for sale outside the US and should not be sold in the US, especially by an authorized Nikon dealer. No Nikon USA authorized repair facility would touch the camera. Let me be clear that Photo Market advertises itself as an Authorized Nikon Dealer. When I spoke with the owner, he mumbled something about getting a good deal on Nikon cameras, but left me with no offer to replace the faulty camera. Any further phone calls were not returned. Ive been left with a camera that doesnt work and that no one will fix!!
A huge amount of stock. Still develops film. All sorts of darkroom and camera supplies. Could use prices on all stock available to customers.
They must have enough business and dont need anymore. I called to see if they carried an expensive camera I was interested in purchasing. The old man answered and when I began asking my question he interrupted me and yelled ITS RUSH HOUR, WHAT DO YOU WANT! I told him that he was too rude to do business with.
They have a huge inventory of products and any part you can imagine. Staff is a little off, but still nice.
Tired place. Im a big fan of buying locally and supporting the small guys, however I will not go back again. Probably the worst customer service Ive ever experienced. My camera sat in their store for over a week before even being sent out for repair. After three months and numerous calls, I finally got the name of the Nikon repair center and called them to find out what was up... They told me that they had been waiting to hear from Photo Market with an OK to proceed. After nearly 5 months I finally received my camera. If I hadnt become directly involved, my camera would still be sitting on a shelf in a Nikon repair facility in the midwest. The feeling that I get is that Photo Market really couldnt care less. There is an almost palpable, oppressive vibe in that place.
Go to place. Peter is knowledgeable.
Helpful staff, and a wide variety of camera products accessories and full developing and printing services.
Great place... friendly and experienced staff
This is the REAL DEAL. I am a super novice, but I was so sick of the streaky awful printouts from walgreens, etc. I asked my photographer friend where to go and she recommended photo mart. Their printing system is old school and more expensive than what you get at major chains, but SOOOOOOOO worth it. The prints are beautiful and their attention to detail is exceptional. Stop going to CVS, Walgreens, etc and support your local peeps who know exactly what their doing!
Excellent knowledge very helpful
Video transfer takes a very ling time. Not ready when promised and painfully expensive.
Very knowledgeable staff. On the chatty side of the equation although I did ask Aden open ended question
Incredibly helpful. Answered questions about a product I bought years ago
Great patient knowledgable staff.
I have been going to Peters store for many years. It may take few minutes to find what you need but there is always a good chance they will have it.
Im not sure how these guys stay in business. I have purchased many items over the years but they are difficult to deal with. Service is a mixed bag, store is very messy and cluttered, and they dont seem to care whether or not you are there as a customer. Try elsewhere.
Terrible service. All employees seem to be sitting on a high horse.
Been coming here for years for my taxi license picture staff is always been professional friendly and prompt
Store very cluttered and should be cleaned but my photos came out great.
I have been in that store twice in the past few years. I dont know why there was a second visit. The owner is smug and obnoxiously RUDE. He acted like I was inconveniencing him and acted like a bully who didnt like you on his turf. Im going to Hunts in South Portland.
Love these guys!
Friendly, helpful service.
The staff was helpful, the place was unorganized, but the staff know exactly where everything is.
Currently closed
