Over the years, in both the original location nearby, and in their current home, Ive paid a variety of types of visits to Books With Pictures. Ive been to fundraisers, author/artist signing events, come in to pick up special order items, and also just dropped in to browse.Neither my spouse nor I are artists or authors, but we know a number of people in Portland whose work can be found on the shelves here - it is truly a reflection of the city in which it is located. My latest visit was to pick up a special order item. The web site makes it very easy to make a request that is fully customized for each item, depending on whether its in stock, available to order, or perhaps no longer available. This is a wonderful part of a city populated with readers, and with creators.
Fantastic local comic book shop with something for every interest. Major mainstream super hero comics, small press, alternative, zines. And the owner obviously loves comics as a storytelling medium, not just superheroes. When I asked for a recommendation, it was if they were able to read my mind! I left the shop with three utterly intriguing books that I can’t wait to start reading. I shall return as frequently as possible!
Such friendly, helpful staff. Great selection
Run by the nicest people in the world, inventory that would put any other shop to shame for its diversity, and a location that is just perfect make for probably my best pick for comic shop. This place has everything as far as I can tell, and if they dont theyll order it for you. Did I mention they deliver? I recommend going in instead though because its magical inside.(Also, there is a secret record shop downstairs, and I still have to check it out!)
Books with Pictures is an absolutely delightful shop. The team that makes this place work is an absolute joy to visit with.
A very belated review for one of my favorite Portland bookshops! Books with Pictures is a wonderful haven for those of us who love sci-fi, fantasy, and other worlds! Katie, the owner, is a sweet and knowledgeable person! Last year, when I was looking for the perfect Christmas present, I emailed her, frantic for ideas. She swiftly got back to me and recommended an assortment of wonderful books, which I ordered and were all well received. I live in the Bay Area now, otherwise Id be up there all the time :) BWP is the best!!!!
The staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and diverse! The product selection is the best in PDX.
Do you love comics and graphics novels then this is the place to go the choices are fantastic. They cover all genres you wont find anther place like it....
Katie is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in getting the right books in your hands. Tell her what youd like and shell either point you in that direction or hand it to you. She and Nick know the contents of this wonderful book shop and wont disapoin!
Such a fantastic selection of comics! They gave us wonderful suggestions that have turned out to be some of my favorites i.e. Witch Boy, Lumberjanes, and Snapdragon 😎 I will definitely be stopping by again!
This place was a huge bummer. Super unfriendly, rude staff. Wouldnt give our kid one of the free comics for no apparent reason. The Eugene one is much better, they actually care if you walk in the door
Love this store. It feels homey in here. I can spend a good amount of time browsing and looking for graphic novels I may enjoy. A definite gem here in Portland.
Great shop for a wide variety of interests and welcoming to all. Tell them what you like to read or watch and they will have a recommendation for you.
Super refreshing to buy comics from someone passionate about them. Intentionally curated selections without feeling overbearing.
Love this store. Tons of awesome books from local creators and friendly service with a lovely clientele that are fun to engage in comic book style conversation. Highly recommend.
I was walking past the store and notice there was broken glass in the driveway I went inside and asked the lady that was working there did you know there was broken glass in the driveway she said yes we know about it I again send so you know theres broken glass in the driveway she looked at me again and said yes we know about it. I take it as they know theres broken glass in their driveway and they dont care if their customers drive over the broken glass, as they knew about it and made no attempt to clean it you can see in the photos theres a lot of broken glass
Amazing store, with passion you can feel. Great selection, and always helpful staff!
Id been looking for an excuse to go. Emailed ahead and they had the small press graphic novel I was looking for.I spent some time just browsing and I could blow a LOT of money here. They had a lot of amazing small publishers, but the giants were still represented.Go here. Buy books.
Love the content they carry, great staff, very LGBTQ+ positive and friendly.
Smaller shop with mainly new releases and omnibus. Decent prices and they had cool mystery grab bags loaded with comics. Some of the grab bags had themes, such as Female Antagonists.Back issues are a bit lacking, but they did have some nice sets. Also, the post it notes on certain sets/comics are really fun to read, and funny at times too.The clerk was super friendly and excellent at relaying relevant information, talking with us about our interests and just generally cheerful. If they had more back issues, I would definitely bump up another star.
I ordered online and costumer service was great! They were fast and friendly at answering emails. And shipping was also super speedy! Thanks y’all!
Absolutely fantastic store, huge selection, and friendly staff! Dont miss it!
A very nice selection of graphic books, graded childrens books, chapter books, YA and so on. They have a selection of books by Portland authors.
I love this local gem! They have quite the selection of comics, graphic novels, and art prints. Order online and they will deliver locally for free. Email them for tailored book suggestions based on your interests. LGBTQ+ friendly and supportive!
My favorite comic store, hands down. I dont read often enough to be in the loop of what is coming out and what I should read to get into a certain story, but this place excels at that direct customer service experience. That level of service does not exist at the other places in town that Ive tried.
Great comic shop! Good selection helpful staff. A lot of the graphic novels are unwrapped so you can flip through them before buying
Beautifully curated comprehensive stock. Clearly run by passionate and knowledgeable people. Could spend hours here!
You could not ask for a more friendly, welcoming comic book store. Their kids section is particularly good.
An amazing selection of single-issue comics, trades, and graphic novels for all ages. Wonderful staff, friendly and inclusive atmosphere, and even a section of zines! The best bookstore in Portland.
I have not been able to personally peruse this store yet due to living over 400 miles away (as well as current events). I did take advantage of their online ordering and was very pleased with the professionalism and friendliness throughout the whole process. Quick shipping with thoughtful packaging, I really appreciated the time they took to find exactly what I wanted. Will order from again and looking forward to when I can make a trip up there to shop in person! Thank you!
Hands down the best comics shop in Portland. Their personal shopping service is incredible.
Staff were super helpful in finding some perfect gifts for friends, family, and ourselves!
The best. Friendly, helpful, and inclusive. Books with Pictures is everything a comic shop should be. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, ready to track down whatever title you seek, and helping beyond in store to make sure you can find your precious little comics. Beyond retail excellence, BwP also has a community of welcoming and caring nerds that love you.
Best place for comics in Portland. They put their heart into our community and Im happy to support their work.
Great selection and super helpful. Found something Ive wanted for months and they also informed me of another graphic novel I would really enjoy. Bought both immediately. Definitely worth checking out. Great to see what they did with the old longfellow space.
Books with pictures did a curated selection of books for my elementary age kiddos. They did a great job of picking options that have been loved my boys and took the stress out of figuring out what to get them. Thank you!
My husband and I adore this place! We could spend hours here, and any weve ever run into working the front desk has always been extremely knowledgeable and kind.
Very warm, welcoming store. The woman working when we were in had great suggestions and led us to buying some books we would have never noticed. We heard about their plans to expand to Eugene, which is all sorts of exciting!
What a cute, bright shop with an incredible selection of graphic novels and individual issues. We received excellent service and great recommendations from the woman working the counter, couldn’t be happier with our new favorite graphic novel store!
The staff are incredibly helpful and kind. I love this place so much and will do what I can when I can to support it. Im new to graphic novels but not once have I been made to feel like a noob or inferior for not knowing a lot about about the comic and graphic novel industries. If anything that made the staff even more excited and happy to help me. The first time I was in, the manager or owner gave me issue 1 of a series called Saga and now Im hooked. They also have gifts for all ages. Im 31 and have gotten Christmas gifts there for friends my age and my 4 year old niece, so theres something for all ages and expierience levels. I implore you to check out this wonderful store on 12th and division.
Super helpful staff and great selection for kids and adults
Easily the best comic place in Portland. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the staff very knowledgeable. I always get the help I need finding what Im looking for and usually walk out with a new favorite read Id previously never heard of. If I could give anywhere more than 5 stars, itd be Books With Pictures.
Fantastic selection, excellent staff, highly recommend!
This place is awesome. Definitely not your average comic shop. Amazingly helpful staff. This shop has a focus on underrepresented groups. Love it so much.
This is my daughters favorite comic book store in Portland now, thanks to Katie! We stopped in on a whim while we were waiting to attend an evening school event, and my daughter, who is normally extremely shy, connected with Katie right away. We had such a great time exploring age-appropriate comics and graphic novels, and by the end of it my daughter was begging to go to summer camp there (note: they do *not*, in fact, offer a summer camp, but my daughter was certain they would make an exception in her case). Katie was incredibly knowledgeable and helped the whole family pick out some new books. When we left, my daughter said she liked Katie so much she wanted to go back and give her a hug. So awesome!
Super friendly staff, inviting cozy atmosphere, even if they dont have what you want poking around has never been so fun
It has books. The books have pictures. It has staff. They have answers. It has places to sit and read. They are cozy. They also had book 2 of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, which we couldnt find at the previous 3 comic shops we went to.
This place is awesome! Its in a cute little hall of independent businesses and has a very open, comfortable feel. Amazing selection of comics. Best place Ive seen for more underground comics too. The owner is also kick ass too. Had a bunch of great suggestions for me and was extremely passionate and friendly :). Will definitely come back here!
Lots of selection of comics and interesting series. As a parent, Im a little concerned how many adult comics were available for kids to peruse, but Im not everyones mom so thats just a word to the wise. Overall nice place, friendly staff.
Fantastic store. Expertly curated selection of comics.
Great selection, especially for a smaller store. Quiet atmosphere and very laid back. They are especially kid friendly and carry some awesome comics and graphic novels for difficult subjects like sex and addiction, for kids starting around age 7. Very, very inclusive staff/clientele and a comfortable place to spend a few hours reading and browsing. Be sure to check out the comfy couches in the back!
Best comic book store in Portland. Friendly staff. Mission of Inclusion. Great selection. Cool new building. Support these folks.
Beautiful welcoming store! Wide selection of comic trades for all ages and adults. Well organized and helpful staff.
Nice reader-friendly shop with a good emphasis on independent and all-ages comics. One special highlight is the display of back issues curated by noted comics expert Douglas Wolk, with sticky notes on the bags bearing his fun and informative comments.
Been here many times, I was always welcomed by very friendly staff even if my mission was just to look around. Awesome people, great selection of big names, local artists, and lots in between. I love this shop, and its going to be my regular haunt.
This place is great! The selection is huge and features a lot of self-published and small press stuff along with the bigger names you would expect to see. The proprietor Katie is friendly and knowledgeable, and the shops stated purpose of being an inclusive space really comes through when youre in the store. It made me feel welcome in way that few other shops (let alone comic shops!) have. Go here! Buy comics!
Great place for folks of all walks of life to get into comics. The staff is very nice and helpful. The selection is wonderful and they have a great kids section. I will be visiting this place often. Also, bonus points for being very accepting of the gender queer community.
Ive made this my regular comic shop. Pleasant staff and atmosphere. I love the feminist and LGBT books -- it makes me feel very welcome.
I love their new location! Books with Pictures has always been a friendly, comfortable place. But now it feels like a coffeeshop, a place I can relax in. It definitely helps that the staff is so friendly and so knowledgable. But I never feel uncomfortable asking for recommendations. Go check it out!
This shop is a treasure. The owner is welcoming, inclusive, and deeply informed; the kids section is amazing, and the adult selection ranges from gritty horror to soaring fantasy to saucy sex education. Not just passively queer-friendly, but actively queer-affirming. I love it.
Best comic store in Portland. Not the biggest. But theres seating! And a kids section! And lots of fun indie stuff! And the nicest staff any comic shop has ever had. Katie is amazing! Thanks for a comic shop for everyone!
This has been one of my favorite places to visit in Portland. Staff is incredibly helpful and the community that has been built around this sore is unlike any other. Great selection of comics. Great people.
Great comic book store for young adults. Pleasant well-lit atmosphere. Female friendly.
Stop by and show this well stocked, minority owned store some love. Amazing, diverse selection despite the stores small size. Special section just for kids. Cozy retail environment in a classic old building.
Great little shop with good people, selection. Its so easy to find what youre looking for!
When you have as many comic shops to choose from in PDX you can be as picky as you want. And we picked Books with Pictures because it is the friendliest, brightest, most feminist and queer friendly shop we have ever experienced. They have great events and a wonderful selection.
Love, love, LOVE this comic store!! Totally geared for everyone whos already into comic books & for anyone wanting to get started. Lots of awesome bundles. Lots of indie publications. Staff is crazy nice & helpful. Monthly drawing gatherings with artists. So much to love about this awesome, lil comic book store!! Nuff said!
Great stock of diverse comics for all ages and interests in a welcoming environment. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Two thumbs up!
My daughter loves this comic book store. They are so nice here. They will pull and hold clinics for you and even set up monthly holds for you.
Fabulous shop! Katie, the owner, takes her time to help my 9-year-old find things she will like and makes sure to remind us when new issues come in. Theres something for everyone here (including a back shelf that has Adult Comics and a sign that says these books have lots of yucky vegetables -- stay away kids!) and I dont feel uncomfortable even though I know nothing about comics. Its nice to have a place where you can take your kid who has finally found things she likes to read, and know that they will gently and kindly be steered away from inappropriate things and towards tons of stuff that they can pick from. Its also nice to know that as she grows up we wont have to find a different shop because theres something for all ages here.
Excited to find this gem in SE Portland. From the Janelle Monet playing on the sound system to the lumberjane girl scout graphic novels for my 9-year old niece (and maybe for me before she gets them) to the gender identity, sex-positive, feminist, and racially representative comics and books, Im sold. Oh, plus its local and independent.
Really excellent range, with many women/queer authors and books Ive not seen elsewhere. Friendly and helpful staff.
Great selection of graphic novels. Very helpful staff!
A wonderful comic shop. The selection is great and the staff are amazingly knowledgeable and friendly and full of great suggestions. I make this a regular stop and have a box for my regular trades! If youre on the fence about comics, this is the place to go!
I cant recommend this place enough! Great selection, and the owner was incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. He helped us find what we were looking for, and some great new comics we had never heard of, but are now new favorites!
New location works well for this quirky, friendly, geeky shop. Comics are sold alphabetically by title, and theres an ample selection of content for a very broad range of ages and interests.
Books with Pictures a a great comic shop, especially if you have never been in a comic shop. The store is very welcoming with a variety of books for most tastes, and definitely for all ages. The owner is extremely knowledgeable about comics, and will be able to provide recommendations to please most. If her recommendations arent good enough, there is a currated collection. Each issue has a note on why you might want to purchase it.Books with Pictures is a great comic shop in a city filled with great comic shops.
This place recently opened and its made it onto my list of cool comics places to go in Portland. Theyre also nice enough to host a comics reading group that I frequent with friends. If they dont have what youre looking for, theyre more than willing to order it for you.
Ive been picking up my comic subscriptions here for a few months now, and they have never missed an issue. Their clearance section is amazing, it actually has good things that you would want to read in good condition at half off; I have discovered a lot of great things to read from there.
Maybe it was due to the stress of FCD, but one of the employees was unnecessarily snarky w me. My four year old was excited by the free aspect, so she calmly was taking one of each book. The employee jumped in and said those arent for kids. I responded that I knew that, but she is just grabbing them for he. He responded they say mature for a reason. Ironic, as his statement lacked maturity. Plus, he was oblivious to the fact that my four year old was excited about his product, comics. Isnt that the point? Save the snark next time.
OMG we are hooked! Went in because weve fallen in love with the Smile series. The man working there helped us find a bunch more books with positive female role models and healthy friendships. We couldve stayed all day!
Moved to former Longfellows space 3 blocks east near Abernethy Elem. My daughter enjoys the cozy kids nook separate from main space.
Tiny but well kept up and very helpful employees.
Very nice, very new. I love the mission statement and its clear its a passionate endeavor. Id love to see what a curated back issue section would look like here.
Awesome selection of all the latest and hottest comics. Great and knowledgeable service as well. Has a kids section for junior
I never regret coming here. Helpful and friendly staff, and a good selection, including a large childrens section.
Clean and cute shop, has a great selection of GNs and a lot of good indie books and zines. The proprietrix was friendly and we had a nice chat, will visit again next time Im in Portland.
Worth the expenses! The black history & comics displayed in the store front is amazing. I love this place.
Truly inspiring selection and wonderfully knowledgeable staff.
Found this by accident waiting for breakfast two doors down. Awesome shop with good selection of many titles. Bright, convenient floorplan and very inviting!
Really big selection. No markups on pricing. Friendly and helpful staff
This is my favorite comic shop in Portland. The staff is great, the selection and organization are excellent, and my 3-yr-old can sit in a beanbag chair reading Free Comic Book Day Disney Princess comics while I flip through the newest issue of Punisher. Im proud to support this local comic shop whenever I seek a physical copy of any floppy or trade or OGN.
They made a lovely mocha so I went back again
Very helpful and friendly staff. Huge comic inventory, nice and comfy seating in store as well. Loved it!
Sooo many good comics in stock! They really know their stuff and are really helpful in finding new reads. Very inclusive, too!
Lovely store with even lovelier people who are ready and able to help anyone find something enjoyable to read
