I took two boys here and they loved it! Wall to wall comics, a small free section, and even some $1 comics.Parking is on the street (there is a small parking lot behind the building, but Im not sure if that is reserved for the restaurant next to Excaliburs).Staff was friendly and helpful.Summer 2021 COVID note: there was a plexi glass shield along the counter and masks required.

The place is just okay, not horrible but not my preferred method of finding single issues. Prices are unnecessarily high. Its like they raise the price of a single issue that you have on hold, just because they had to hold it for a couple of days until you have a day off from your job just to spite you. If you absolutely have to come here; go ahead. Just realize youre going to find yourself out a few more bucks than normal honestly.

A Portland landmark, Excalibur Comics is something of a gateway to the fun and fanciful experiences one is bound to have in the lower Southeast Hawthorne arts and commerce district.Boasting thousands of issues of your fave Marvel and DC titles, as well as the indie-flavor offerings that have found favor lo these many years in comic and zine-centric Portland, youre likely to satisfy your pulp and pop itch at Excalibur. And if you cant afford to invest in this months ~$5.00 issue of your hack-n-slash hero(ine), then take a deep-dive in the bargain boxes near the register!

Sold some books here from my old collection, the few they were interested in. Very open about only paying 25% of their anticipated retail, which seems awfully low compared to how resale works in literally every other industry, but hopefully someone on the other side will end up getting a deal. Ultimately if I wanted to maximize profit, Id be going to eBay.Owner seems like a clear-headed business person interested in providing the brick and mortar comic shopping experience for the long haul, which is admirable.

Such an amazing store. The employees are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Went in on free comic book day and was blown away by the service. I was welcomed by the staff, asked if I needed help, even was offered a lollipop. I went in for the free comics, but thought hey, maybe I can get that rare comic book I was looking for. The guy that helped me knew that issue well, lead me to where it supposed to be but unfortunately it was empty. Then he did the most amazing thing in the world. He actually called another comic book store. He said the last time he was in they had it. The phone call confirmed it. So not only did I get free comics, I was lead to a place where I could find that one issue I needed. Im going back to Excalibur comics just because of this great service.

If you want comics and nothing else, that is what youll find here. Huge selection of back issues, as well as the obligatory current issues and hardcover collections. Theres no frills or really anything else at all. I usually tag along with my boyfriend. Im low-key into comics, not a fanatic or aficionado. But not a neophyte. I usually can find a few random things to try to hold my attention while he dives deep into back issues.Weve been here about half a dozen times. Last time we were here there was 3 or 4 employees organizing comics and having a loud, profanity-filled conversation that they seemed to obviously hope other people would be overhearing wherein they were deriding or mocking something Marvel/DC/both related... It was just a turn-off, and seemed kind of a silly thing for store employees to be doing. Im not a prude about casual swearing, but if I was their boss, I wouldnt be letting them speak like that in front of half a dozen customers. Shows a lack of social/situational awareness. But thats really just a one-off (I hope!) and doesnt affect my likelihood to go back or not. What would be more likely to affect whether we keep going back is the fact that unless you want to root through back-issues of comics, theres literally no reason to go here.Parking is tough to find on Hawthorne, you may have to walk a block or two to get to the store--not a deal breaker, at least parking is free. Not the cleanest or nicest part of town, there were some people sitting a few doorways down doing some questionable stuff that we tried to walk by real quickly.

Excalibur can seem daunting when walking in, however if you know your alphabet you can find nearly any back issue your looking for. The variety is endless. Prices are not the cheapest around, but if you are looking for some good reads on the cheap their dollar comics are decent, and relatively recent. If your looking for something more than 90s Image comics or silver age nothings give it a flip through, but be prepared to spend some time digging. Employees are very knowledgeable and not pretentious. I had an overall pleasant ezpreiance and Ill defiantly be stopping by regularly.

Good comic book store, lots of back issues as well as new stuff, the lady is knowledgeable and professional, staff is mostly kool, one of their staff members came over to look at my collection and had stolen from me, but I doubt they actually knew about it, so the business is cool but I will never forget that one jerk who stole my Ironman #1 1968 and replaced it with a very messed up low grade version of the same book.
