Anyone see something wrong with the picture? Take a look at the highlighted date on the paper and the date on the package. Over a month expired!! (You have to click on the picture to see both dates.) I should know better then to order groceries from the commissary. They always have expired items on the shelves. In the past I’ve returned beef jerky, bacon and a few other things, then I learned to check the dates before I put it in my cart. Guess their grocery stockers and shoppers don’t check for expired items. I’ll still shop here but won’t order again.

Extremely rude staff, poorly stocked half the time. This is the third time I’ve been in here and had to deal with terrible customer service. By far the worst commissary I’ve been to in the last 10 years. The drive to Little Creek or a local store is worth it.

Bought beef, milk, and bread. The beef looked fine, but the grey parts had just been hidden under the other slices. The milk curdled well before its expiration date. The bread went moldy maybe a week after I bought it. The Prices are comparable to food Lion down the street, but never had anything go bad with my food there.

Prices are usually wholesale which is good, but their supply chain management is very poor. Not unusual for them to not have something in stock for weeks at a time. This happens to me on a routine basis and I have to supplement my trips by going to another store. Also, the bagger guilt trip is unfortunate. Hire actual employees to do this and increase the surcharge. No more tip guilt!

The picture is from the commissary but not of interest. The fact is that this place is only a good deal if you shop selectively. For example, the chicken is a good deal but the beef isnt. Its also low quality (the beef).The vegetables are average on price but usually low quality which is a shame. The same could be said of the dairy department except for the brand name items. Keep away from their frozen foods. Their handling practices are awful. Food has often (clearly) melted then refrozen.So, what is the commissary good for? Name brand packaged foods. Youll save 50% on A1 steak sauce, for example. I wont list everything but the products that major manufacturers sell to the commissary at discounted rates are what you should buy there. Skip the stuff that they have to handle and process themselves.

Go the week after payday you will be okay. Great selection of goods and decent prices.

Start paying your baggers and stop making me pay them. There is no reason you should be falling back on a primitive 1920s scam just to save a quick buck you dirty cheapskates.

The people here are kind of rude. But they have a pretty good selection, I guess. Honestly, I prefer to go to Food Lion for grocery shopping. Its about as good prices, if not better. Way more welcoming than commissary in my opinion

Both times my daughter and I tried to enter to check store out, we were greeted by unfriendly people. Never entered the store nor will we in the future! Not worth it

Nice, but not as budget friendly as it used to be. I can do better at the local store sales. The produce at the Commissary has always been of a lower quality from Krogers, Harris Teeters etc.Commissary does have much more frozen and international products.Sad but true. Military families deserve so much better.

Check out lines moved really fast. They have regular, self- checkout and 15 items or less, so dont get confused and wait in the self- checkout thinking its the regular line. (It happened to us.) The commissary is a good size and they even have a seafood market. They dont have a huge variety of meats or Hispanic section which is what I didnt like and the aisles are a little small for the amount of people they had. We usually buy at the Oceana Commissary but came to shop in Norfolk so we bought groceries over here today.

Certain things are absolutely great to buy from the commissary... Honey Nut cheerios and more family size box for $1.50, and boneless chicken for 1/2 off just catch the sale and its worth it even better than coupons sometimes. Ive only dealt with very helpful and professional staff and always more that one lane open...

Awesome staff, best selection of groceries in the city, very responsive to the needs of their patrons. Clean and fresh facilities. If you have Commissary privileges and you do not use them, you are doing yourself a great disservice!

Not everything is cheaper here but I’m a one stop shopper. I don’t want to drive to 5 different stores to save 25 and 50 cents here and there. Overall good selection, stays well stocked, and is pretty clean.

Im not sure whats going on with this place, but shelves are increasingly empty and the selection is narrowing. Its been going on for too long for it to be a fluke. Luckily, the Little Creek store is still good.

Requires military or dependent ID.Great commissary. Huge selection, helpful staff, and clean. Often busy but worth the wait for the prices and the good produce. Best time to go is 10AM-1PM. The only less than favorable fact is that most of the fish is previously frozen (always clearly labeled) and the beef isnt always cut properly, but the pros far outweigh the cons in my opinion.

I have been shopping at the NOB Commissary since 2000 and today I encountered the absolute rudest checker on the express line. She told me I had too many items, which I did not and insisted the customer behind me had had to go before me. I obliged and he actually had 25 items. When it was my turn to check out there was no greeting, no Thank you at the end, just silence. I would suggest that the managers at the commissary talk to their Check out associates and remind them about who the customer is and how important GOOD customer service is — all the time. So Shirley, I would suggest you change your attitude and remember you have a job because myself and others like me choose to shop at the commissary and not go to Kroger or Harris Teeter.

I always enjoy coming here and getting my groceries. But my husband and I almost always have trouble with the deli... either they dont have what we need or when we order it they have attitudes about having to cut it

Food is fresh, selection is usually great. Very busy on pay day. Save yourself a lot of time and go a few days before or after pay day. Also, some prices are better than civilian grocery stores, but not all prices. Compare prices with other stores for best values.

Store was well stocked and workers great as usual. Prices seem to keep going up and keeping pace with higher prices in town. Is it worth it anymore with the exception of some items? Surcharge then takes up any savings because youre paying on all items not just inedible ones..

Great place for produce, meat (not deli) and dairy. Basically, if you stick to the outer isles of the store, you cant go wrong. Limited to card carrying members.

Decent prices on most stuff. Two huge downfalls, though:- they use the vegetable misters on the fruits... meaning anything you get is soaked in water (think raspberries, strawberries, etc.); this leads to the stuff growing mold a day or two after you buy it- there are always long lines for the checkouts... alwaysSince I can’t reliably buy fruit here, I choose to do my shopping elsewhere

This is not a public place. Many that should have the benefit of this blessing.,simply because they served period, dont have it because they did not remain in the military until retirement, or they did not get messed up in the time they did serve. Pretty good deals and pretty good staff. Cashiers will undoubtedly be speaking a foreign language to their counterparts in front of your face though 9 times out of 10 so thats nice

There is a surcharge instead of tax. Prices are cheaper for the most part Specially the meat and poultry. There are only 3 self check out counters and line is usually long because there are no limit on items and everybody uses it so you will be forced to go to the regular check out if in a hurry. Baggers work for tips as usual but i would rather not if i only have $20 worth of stuff. The $4-5 tip for that plus surcharge would be way less if you just go to kroger or something similar.

More often than not, they have the best deals on fresh meat and seafood. Lots of other deals throughout the store that are hard to beat too.

Wii shop on base 2 to 3 times a month due to the great deals on their meat and other routinely used items that are family needs I am proud to be a military wife.

Overall this is a very good place. and the best deals on a lot of different types of food in the prices on meat absolutely cannot be beat. I dont think the fish they provide is of the best quality but its very rare that you have a commissary that offers fresh fish so its a good trade-off. Their prices on the cereals and dry goods are really hard to beat but I think Walmart might be comparable in terms of some of them. they have a very limited selection of yogurt so if thats your thing shop elsewhere.Ive seen some of the newer commissaries especially up near DC and it would benefit greatly from getting an upgrade. Norfolk is the largest naval base in the world that should definitely have one of the better commissaries. If you are able to shop here than do it, but you may need to go elsewhere for more niche or specialty items.

This store definitely needs some coaching their employees. The deli employees are not friendly at all. Most of the time they get my order wrong. From now on when they dont slice the way I request, I will refuse it. And the cashier wasnt pleasant either. I asked her a question and she just gave me a dumb look. This is definitely noty favorite commissary!

I love the selection of food here. The fruits and vegetables are always fresh and everything else is good quality. A downside is that its always extremely crowded every time I come here. The cashiers can be a little rude sometimes also.

Three stars only because we find the prices on most items are not as discounted as one might expect. The variety is certainly there and some things are good buys. Meat? Pretty much like civilian supermarkets. Produce is hit and miss. Bread and bakery items? Again, like civilian grocery stores.If you want a good deal, become a member at BJs or Sams Club. There you WILL get good deals all the time!

I love the commissary for Great Deals great deals and the fact that you dont pay taxes and you can always find any and everything in the commissary because of the fact that theres a lot of foreigners active duty in the military who family looks for certain things that the commissary order and have for them that they can find things in the commissary have them

Terrible customer service from associate checking IDs at the door. Her name starts with an S she worked on Sunday around 2pm. She was very rude to my husband and I. My husband is active duty and had his ID and I forgot mine. She did not let us in and was very rude with us about it. Her tone of voice was very unprofessional and did not show any care nor concern to provide good customer service. She scold me for forgetting my ID. (Really?) She was very unprofessional. Not the type of customer service active duty family should recieve. We will not be coming back to this commissary.

Everyone show respect towards each other. Very clean atmosphere. No loud talking and people using profanity.

PLEASE READ FOR CORRECT HOURS!Im giving this a neutral rating not for the store itself but because the hours posted on Google are incorrect. The correct hours are: open 7 days a week, early bird hours are from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM and normal times are from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM with the exception of Thursdays which it is open until 8:00 PM. This information is directly from the commissary website. I hope this helps so you dont end up driving across town for it to be closed when you get there like we did.

Decent prices. Most staff friendly. Was very irritated when a employee who was trying to get my 80yr old grandma to move her electric buggy at checkout. When she couldnt pull toward and no one was behind her. He was very rude to her and rolled his eyes at her!! Shes 80yrs old and half deaf!! Not good customer service!! Instead he should of help me load the cart onto the belt so she could move forward!!

Why two stars? That is as it compares to other commissaries that actually are designed to be up to date and customer friendly.Possibly the worst commissary Ive ever visited. The entire facility is way too small for the area, there is no room to move in the isles, there is not enough shelf space for the employees to keep any popular items stocked. The deli is pathetically small. Produce is not always rotated properly or at all and usually has stock issues.The parking lot seems designed to make customers cars a mile away from the single store entrance.Pros: looking for the best price on fresh chicken and beef- they cant be beat. But then again you can get the same prices at another commissary, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This place sells groceries at their cost. The meat & produce departments are outstanding. If you are active or retired military, you should be shopping here. Literally the only downside is that you have to navigate through aisles full of wild dependapotami.

RUDE RUDE RUDE!!!!! I asked the bagger to put the groceries in our basket because I didnt think we had cash to tip him and so I didnt want him walking us out for nothing. Well he didnt like that because he started dropping my bags in the cart, even the glass items! It wasnt until I got cash out that he eased up and even then he was still dropping them, just not from as far up. Not okay. Teach your employees better customer service.

Closes way to early Im in the military and I get off of work everyday about 6-6:30pm there is no way I can go here and shop. I think that the hours should changed this location is in support of the worlds largest naval base. They should act like it.

Overall the best prices you can find for groceries. Save up using your coupons and use apps like Ibotta to get maximum savings. I have not had any problems with freshness of any of the meats or seafood I have purchased. Occasionally I have found the milk to be within a day or 2 of its sell by date but dig to the back and you find the fresher stuff. Also for extra savings try out the Commissary app for Android or IOS to use digital coupons! Try to stay away on payday or a day or 2 after, its a zoo!!
